Thanks for another fun video. Each one of these has hidden nuggets that I tuck away into my opal memory banks. I’m still feeling my way into learning to carve opal and every bit helps.

So awesome to see two of my favorite youtubers collaborating. And that's a killer little nugget Uncle Don has sent ya! Cool watching, and the flattening of the back is definitely a smart move. I looked forward to some day being able to work with some fresh stones again. Hopefully the upcoming appointment with the Swedish Neuroscience Center will bear some fruit, and I can get back to work and have an income again. So there's some hope. I definitely haven't lost my passion/addiction, just haven't been able to order any stones for a while. Bumbai. But thanks for another great video, Roy. Cheers

He is a man I am always more than happy to work with. Even if it means I am forever tackling his occurs or tricky stones. The trickier the stone the more fun I have really. Fingers crossed you get things sorted out and get back in full swing. Just gotta punch life in the face every now and then when it turns on you. That's what I try to do anyway.

It's always interesting to see what some people consider "cut-offs". Then again he deals in very high grade, beautiful opals. So glad he sent it to you because he knew you'd make a video or two, appreciate the stone and keep it alive. It turned out great and will make a great double sided pendant.

Pulitzer made a comment and wants it back so maybe he has a plan for it? I wasn't going to be skilled enough to set it any time soon anyway.

You did an excellent job with that one! Please send it back. Perfectly cut to show off the most color. It will look great on Sheila! I have some more for you. Probably will not send it for about a week ... working on the next video here. I have a pretty nice CP stone; Trying to figure out whether to make an arrowhead out of it or give to you. It will require freehand flaking, because it is not suitable to grind the basic "lens" profile. FYI: Freehand flaking is what real flintknappers do. DO NOT try it .... don't waste your time. Do what you do, not what some insane Yank does (I'm talking about Sheila)
@RoysRocks

Oh if you want that one back I dont have to stress about trying to set it myself. Do you get opals set by a pro or do it yourself? Haha I must be crazy because so far I have only been doing the freehand flaking!!! Tough to start and probably wasteful of material but there is something so cool and primal about it! I want to try what I've heard called percussion knapping/flaking where you literally start banging rocks together. Now thats suitable for "roys rocks".

Percussion flaking basically IS flintknapping. 95% of knapping is percussion. The freehand arrowhead came out okay, but when I did the “throw” at the end, it fell on the floor and broke in two! I will probably send it to you.
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks 3 ай бұрын
I think I have been doing "soft" because of the antler or copper stick but I really want to try just rock vs rock. Looks much tougher controlling the flakes. I think there must be a lot of luck and brakeage involved. Oh man I just accidentally broke a stone cleaning up today as well!!! What are the odds?!
@PulitzerOpal
@PulitzerOpal 3 ай бұрын
@@RoysRocks Controlling the flake removal is what knapping is all about. You can learn how to cut a cabochon in a few weeks to a few months with only minor improvement with practice thereafter. You can probably learn to make a percussion-flaked arrowhead in a couple of months (it used to be about a year; that was before KZfaq). At that point, you are about 30% as good as you CAN be with practice. I am at about 90~95% - with 20+ years of experience. Professional knappers are mostly 95-99+%. You are always learning better ways to do things. (At least I am!)
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks 3 ай бұрын
It certainly has a wild learning curve. I'm sure changing materials is a huge factor too. Even once I get it right on obsidian I'll try an opal and make an absolute mess of it the first few times!
