I really don't think the pygmies were branded by the dark sign before the gods fought and destroyed the dragons, I rather think Gwyn branded them AFTER the war against dragons, why would he made them weaker?? At that time I think Gwyn needed the full forces of his allies.

He branded them after the war after seeing their massive power and because these armors are made in the abyss and betray a smidgen of life ( I think it means that they have some kind of sentience).

Correct. After the war, his gaze turned from his enemies, to his allies. He feared the dark and the power that humanity harboured. As such, he branded humanity with the Curse to harness and control the power of the Dark Soul.

@@theonewhoismany8072The armor probably helped in the fight, being forged in he abyss, it could gain consciousness. Probably like Guts berserker armor. Where it was alive, or had some presence in it, that wouldn't let the user lose a fight, unless the body was completely destroyed, inside and out. I doubt it was like that, but we are talking about a series that isnt shy about it's reference material. I think the seal of fire, actively seals that entity, just enough to know something was there, but while the seal is there, its just really good armor.

Agreed, as I interpreted the lore, Gwyn branded them with the sign as a sign of faux gratitude while actually doing it to seal away their power. Gwyn was known to gift his allies various things post-war.

I agree one hundred percent with you. Great video! As to Manus, I think that he was a Pygmy lord with a sizeable chunk of the Dark Soul, if not the first. I think he lived in/created Oolacile for sentimental reasons (the pendant implies as much), perhaps in a time before the war with the dragons ended and the pygmies were bound to Gwyn, and that he managed too hide because he was a gifted sorcerer that focused on concealing himself well (the spells of Oolacile were focused on deception and hiding after all, and Manus his soul can be used to make a socery staff and a spell). I think that for Kaathe, who wanted to create a 'whole' Dark Soul (kind of implied by how the Dark Wraiths operated), Manus was the only sizeable chunk of the Dark Soul he had access too as the Ringed city was beyond his reach; so he became the target. The rest is history. I do not think Manus is the father of the Abyss though, as the Ringed knight armor clearly states that the Abyss predates Manus. However, I do think that agitating a large part of the Dark Soul allowed the Abyss to funnel into Lordran (its averse affect on the local creatues may be more due to Manus his madness than the nature of the Abyss). So he was the father of the abyss *in Lordran*. Though perhaps a seperate video on where Manus stands given this new information would be awesome too :)

Yeah - 'The Father of The Abyss' thing needs to be revisited but he clearly isn't the father of all Abyss just of the one that spawned Oolacile, I would certainly consider a revisit video on the Abyss, Manus and the Darkwraiths. Thanks for the support!

Nah, I agree with this. Notice the Fauna around his place of burial. It's just humanity sprites. Twisted, in how they deal damage, even tho they just want to be loved. The corruption that happens to the Oolacile residents, was because they were corrupt themselves. They uncovered a corpse, ripped the only thing that kept him sane, and in the grave, out of his hands, and experimented on him. I think Manus just turned them into what he wanted them to be, or as he saw them. Humanities are destructive lovers. Destructive in how they deal damage on contact, but it's not like they mean to.

2:34 I see the statue in an all different light. For me he's not crowning the pigmys but rather taking the crown away from them. If you look carefully, Gwyn's gaze is focused on the crown rather than on the person he's supposedly honoring, because the threat of an opposing force is what he's really nervous about. How much of Pygmy King/Lord are you when in reality you answer to someone other than yourself ? Thats why he's giving out the ring. The Chlotranthy ring represents Filianore. Its an exchange. And the statue is a reminder of this "contract". Mind you the conclusion is the same, but the interpretation of the statue is different : in exchange for their servitude (for me, taking the crown), he "gifts" Filianore as insurance of his good faith (giving out the ring), but actually wining on both side since Filianore's egg seem to hold the "prison" that is the Ringed City. And you gotta wonder : which side built the statue, and if it were the Pigmy Lords were they aware of its true meaning ? i completely agree with the rest but I'm only at the 10min mark, great vid.

I completely agree with you, furthermore, with the old symbolism, the right hand is deemed as the ''giving'' hand, and the left hand is traditionally accepted as the ''taking'' hand. I think a little different about the interpretation of it, taking the crown implied much more than the servitude of pygmies, ( or humans) it implies beeing somehow beeing stripped of their lord title, in exchange for the power of endurance and natural vegetative power. Filianore is very symbolic too, and that ties with it, Gwin thought his youngest daughter was not that powerful as his other children, Nameless king,(strenght), Gwyndolin, (sorceries) and Gwynewere, (sunlight), so he gave her to the pygmies, but something went wrong with it, Filianore was meant to keep the dark soul or a dragon inside the Egg, but a mad pygmy somehow managed to take it without breakin the egg entirely and wakin up Filianore, and then proceed to spread it around the world while the legacies of the gods was slowly fading.
@MidnightatMidian
@MidnightatMidian 5 жыл бұрын
And the mad king and Shira's spear implying the real meaning of the clohranthy ring, maybe Gwyn gifted them immortality, or the dark soul give that to them, so at a certain point seeing the numbers of immortal pygmies growing more and more, gwyn branded them with the dark sign, which is the not ''dark'' but in reality, the ''fire'' sign, which don't allow an immortal pygmy to grow powerful, rather consumes his humanity and turn him into a mindless hollow.

@@MidnightatMidian Wholeheartedly agree, especially the vegetal symbolism. The cracked-egg is somewhat a mystery to me, I follow Smoughtown (holds the flow of time, its been so long and nature has been corrupted by Gwyn, is that why it is rotten ?) though nice interpretation; asks the question of how the Dark Soul got around all the way to DS1despite the Pigmy Lords being locked away... I figured it was that Humanity = Dark Soul, as in it is an essential part of our being, of any human no matter how young, different from a soul than can be transferred to whatever vessel. Thats why it could never truly disappear or why only female corpses bear Twin Humanities in DS1 (pregnancy ?). There's a whole discussion on this in DS1 in the item descriptions of soul items and humanity : it questions life on the singular difference between Humanity and Souls : "If the soul is the source of all life, then what distinguishes the humanity we hold within ourselves?" hell its not even lore at this point but philosophical point of view.

Another view of Manus to consider In this analysis is that, when the Chosen Undead enters Oolicile, he isn't the only one and neither was he the only one to leave. The path created here was a separate one from time all together like that of the ring city it could be possible that both this and Manus are linked in that respect i.e the splitting of humanity and Manus being the/a primeval man and father to the Abyss.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but can you explain how these pygmies at the end of the world are so valued for their dark soul, yet I thought the dark soul resided in all men? And aren't the majority of inhabitants in this world historically human? Am I confusing the dark soul with humanity? Obviously the pygmies look a bit different then normal man, but I was equating the dark soul to actually represent many aspects of mankind, which fell in line with the 'gods' subjugation of man in fear of its potential.Thinking about it, I remember that humanity is absent in DS3. Is it that humanity IS the dark soul, yet its virtually dried up at this point in history aside from these last few old pygmies? Perhaps because most of mankind has been reduced to being undead at this point? Probably because of the 'gods' grand scheme to feed the fire with the soul of people which has lasted for ages? It does seem that options to feed the flame in DS3 are abysmally thin. Which maybe is why we have so many odd and seemingly unwilling lords of cinder. Yhorm, Aldrich, and Ludleth all would appear to have motivations that at least don't naturally make one think they would be the first to sacrifice themselves for the good of all.

3 month old reply, a lenghty one but i'll give my (long) perspective on it: The Lords represent aspects of flame. (In other languages, words like fire and flame are not interchangeable.) Gwyn - Lord of Light Izalith - Lord of Heat Nito - Lord of Destruction Pygmy - Lord of Growth and original keeper of the Dark soul. (spread it to humanity for it to keep growing) The first thing you notice about fire is how powerfull it is as it pushes the darkness away and keeps it in check. The second thing you notice is the heat it creates, enthralling whomever may gaze upon it. The third thing you notice is it’s need to consume and destroy other things to keep itself alive. (hint hint) The last thing you notice is as it’s dying out, is the darkness returning to claim it's rightful place. What is the Dark Soul? The ability to grow & preservere. Why did Gwyn fear it? It’s because it’s fueled by raw EMOTION, and thus reaches everything living over time. (as seen with even the gods) In other words, the Dark Soul is the only self-sustaining power left. The pygme gave the Dark soul to humanity. (and the Gwyn imprisoned the pygme's in the ringed city, under pretense of it being a gift, he also sweetened it with offering his daughter) Then Gwyn corralled the cursed undead (which he created by the darksign) to the north. (and thus began the mass siphoning of souls to feed the Flame, and Gwyn decided upon feeding the fire by siphoning Souls/Humanity from the humans) It’s the old tale of the gods fearing mankinds ability to grow into something powerful, something to rival even a Lord. Humans were not risen undead from the get go, they lived, and died just like humans always had. (albeit underground, alongside other humanoids and beasts, who lived and died.) From the intro: "The fire was lit, then from the dark they came, and found the Souls of Lords within the flame" So the souls of Lords was in the flame, and they (most likely referring to giants and various other creatures) found them, those who got the flame became Lords with powers never seen before, aka gods. But these Souls of Lords did not originate from the Dark, they came from the Flame. The first thing these 'gods' did was to conquer and use their power in a massive war with the Ancient Dragons. They started depleting their own Flame instantly by using it for their own rise to power. And thus they sought another fuel for their flame.. The "ashen one" / "chosen undead" is tricked over and over by the keepers of the light/flame, to link the first flame. Even most of the 'gods' knew it was futile, and they refused to return to their thrones to keep the flame ablaze out of this knowledge.. and their greed for keeping their power to themselves. Gwyn decieved humanity and afflicted humans with the darksign [with help of Nito] in an attempt to keep the flame ablaze and stave off the Dark. (this is the curse, and the undead, eating away at their humanity until nothing but a hollow husk remains.. in a futile attempt to keep the flame fueled). Now as Gwyn lost his war with the Chaos / Abyss, and his knights came back as mere spirits in armor, he realised his era of Fire was over. The cities and lands the giant gods held fell into madness as more and darkness were spreading and there were not enough to fuel the flame against the demons/chaos. This is how most of these giant gods and their subjects became driven to madness. By their own misuse of their flame, by their greed to strive for power and their utter disrespect for other living creatures. Gwyn even went to the extent to split his flame to other kings to keep the era of Fire going. At the end of Dark souls 1, if you chose to NOT to light the fire, and instead go back out: You are greeted by quite a few Primordial Serpents, who are happy that you finally let the Era of Fire end. IF it was a 'BAD' end, why would the oldest of the beings be glad? And all of them? not just one or two?

Even the las Izalith daughter had the same size as a human pygmy. Apparently the difference is not about body(which can be reshaped by souls) buy their SOULS, like the humanity sprite. The purge monument could never be reached by beings whose souls were not Dark/Humanity based.

I think there's a parallel to be drawn between how Gwyn treated the pygmies and the chaos demons. The abyss is said to originate life, associated with the pygmies and the chaos flame originated the demons. Gwyn feared the abyss and sealed the pygmies away. Later he would ostracize and fight a war against demonkind with his now black knights.

lol, you have some good points there, but you should have dedicated some more time to talk about oolacile and manus. Its not really said that he is in fact the furtive pygmy that found the dark soul but a primeval man, that could really be one of roalty of the ringed city. But theres a lot of lore that states some things. As kaathe says the dark souls was found by one person and he share it with the rest of humanity. 'Manus' is the Latin word for 'hand'. Additionally, Manu is a term found with various meanings in different mythologies of Hinduism. In early texts, it refers to the archetypal man, or to the first man, progenitor of humanity. In later texts, Manu is the title or name of the head of mythical dynasties that begin with each cyclic aeon when the universe is born anew. Theres some theorys that oolacile wake and tortured the primeval man under kaathes influence because of kalamet, in search of sorceries strong enought to stop him as we find a lot of new sorceries discovered in the dlc - agressive and dark ones not like the illusionary that dusk sells us when we find her in the crystal golen. Also the corrosion and swamp that slowly eats oolacile is very similar to the swamp that is spreading in the ringed city, althought theres not life spreading from it and its not ging through the buildings. Finally we can see taht manus is cleary a owerful and different individual. No other man turned out like this upon torture in oolacile and they were cleary styding his powers and his dark soul. When his humanity went wild we can see pieces of it walking around the abyss of oolacile, the same form as the icon. Its literally a walking humanity. Also is taht the witch beatrice that helps us fighting the moonlight butterfly and the four kings have the same set of the deformed witches that we face in oolacile, and that explains why she, much like artorias and the chosen undead, was able to transverse teh abyss too helping us fighting with the four kings

I always figured Manus was the furtive pygmy. He was Father (priestly, patriarchal sense) of the abyss, and the pygmies forged their weapons in such a place before the mark of fire placed on them. He has a grave. Graveyards and burials are shown in this world to be the culture of the God's, and the primitive site where he rests probably indicates how long ago this actually happened. Death itself is a realm of the Gods. He was knowingly buried under Oolacile, which had direct relations with the ringed city. Honestly there is a lot more that I don't care to get into through phone posting lol. I really enjoy you and Hawkshaws work. I'm curious as to which version of the Furtive Pygmy's fate you prefer. Personally, I rather enjoy the idea that Manus was perhaps the one after all, having been laid to rest long before his brethren were sealed away in the Ringed City. The "progenitor of man", to paraphrase Kaathe. I would expect the crowning of the pygmy lords and the gifting of the city to take place well after the Dragon War, after all. I also like the notion that "Father of the Abyss" is not to be taken literally at face value, but to be considered in context; Manus did not literally create the abyss, rather, waking him from his rest caused the latent power of dark within him to go wild, twisting him and spilling out into his surrounding, thus bringing The Abyss to Lordran, after the Dark Soul had been sealed away. A twisted ploy by Kaathe to reestablish the dark as a factor in the power struggle outside the Dark Soul's prison. In that sense, Manus *is* the Father of the Abyss; just not The Abyss as a concept, but the Abyss localized to Lordran and, as time progressed, other regions as well. And later on, the fragments of his twisted power would then coalesce into the beings of The Abyss that we see in later titles, while likely also manifesting into the Deep Sea religion represented by Aldrich. I also think this approach is somewhat supported by Aldia's speeches in DS2. Maybe he didn't understand the full scope of it, but he did seem to realize that everything that was happening was part of some sort of divine comedy.

He then instituted a society that fueled Light with Dark, and has been sacrificing people in order to keep the first flame lite. Depleting life in order to maintain society, but society is made of that life, so the flame still dies down. Until even the ligbt burns out, and smothering embers are all that is left?

No one is aware of who we are or what our role is within game. Hence furtive. And the game is literally called dark souls so we are controlling the chosen undead through “dark souls” in a literal sense. My head canon is that Miyazaki was doin more of his fourth wall trickery. I dont think that manus is the furtive pigmy but he was instead one of the pigmy lords after the so called furtive pigmy died or split the dark soul amongst first humans which manus was one of them...the identity of the furtive pigmy will never be clear and so is the name of gwyn's first born because they were erased from history amongst many other characters. Kaathe is not trying to bring back dark lord but hes instead gathering dark soul into one vessel to bring back the age of dragons. How you may ask? Think about it the old gods killed the dragons. And gwyn feared the dark soul/darklord/furtive pigmy the most. So it makes sense to bring back the dark soul to kill the gods and so kaathe can bring back the age of dragons. Because serpents are incomplete dragons and he wants to bring age of ancients back.

Well, according to lore, Ds1's age of fire, wasn't the first one. There were many other cycles before the one Gwyn fucked it up. I mean, it's not like we are returning the essences of the actual fire, back in when we take back the souls of the 4 lords. We are just putting kindling in. Source? The chaos flame. It is an unnatural 1st flame. It's made from the soul of life, and the dark soul. If The Witch of Izalith had a big enough fragment of each original aspect of the First flame, she woulda created one. But she had only half the ingredients. Gwyn, was rekindling a dying flame. He didn't need to make a new one, just keep the old one going. And it seems like someone tried to make another new flame, but made the profaned flame instead. And that was an even weaker version of the chaos flame.

I don't think Gwyn gifting them a city at the end of the world is a sign of his generosity it seems to me more like he was trying to get rid of them because he was afraid of the dark soul

All I know is that the pygmy king has the same voice actor as Dorian Pavus from Dragon Age inquisition. Idk what to do with this information

You got one thing wrong. Gwin didn’t give a city to the humans he gave them a prison. He sealed away the pygmys, the ringed knights fought the dragons and killed the dragons(seen in the shield) . He feared humanity and their power.

Fabio Silva Its a matter of perspective if you were a Pygmy who believed Gwynn lies then it was a great gift if you knew how full of shit he was then you saw the city as a prison

Best attempt yet to make sense of the mess that is Dark Soul's lore. Too much retconning from DS1 up to DS3.

Yet another wrong take on the lore based entirely on believing what Kaathe says despite the fact the items in DS1 tell you he's a liar. Why is so much of this community so arrogant and power hungry? You'd believe Kaathe if he told you to eat your own mothers.

So much in Ds1 proves Frampt is not to be trusted either, so why are you riding his side so hard?
