Dark Souls Lore | The Tyranny of Elfriede

In this lore video we take a look at the character of Elfriede, or Sister Friede, and how her search for belonging led her to become a Tyrant.

So Frieda abandons the dark church, enters the painted world and ironically becomes the same thing as Gwyn to that world.

No, but she doesn't want Flame. She wants rot. She wants the world to fade, where Gwyn wants the world to shine.

@@NamesSmeg No she literally became the Gwyn of the Painted World. When the painting began to rot, she staved off the cleansing flame and let the corvians rot in order to maintain her rule. Gwyn did the same thing when he sealed man with the dark sign, hoping to stave off the abyss. He caused humanity to hollow so he could maintain his lordship.

If you choose the 'good ending' for the story, AKA summoning the Firekeeper to the Kiln and letting the fire fade, you are basically respecting both Elfriede's and Lothric's wishes. Elfriede is almost doing in the Painted world what you'd do in the Real world by choosing Darkness, except it backfires on her by creating rot in the painting. In the Real world, by the point you reach the Kiln, the world around you seems 'rotten', twisted upon itself due to the fire being re-linked and the cycle endlessly repeating itself. But in the Painted world, it's ironically the lack of fire that is causing rot to appear. So for me at the very least, she isn't a tyrant like Sulyvahn is, more like an anti-hero, akin to Gael at the end of the Ringed City.

She tried to link the flame and failed. Realised that the whole linking thing is a lie and according to her experience, no good can come from fire. She became forlorn by the knowledge and was drawn to the painted world. She will never allow fire to be a solution as a result of her experiences in the real world, and thus won't allow the painting to be burnt. She ordered wilhelm to kill the painter and when it turned out shes immortal, he locked her up instead.She sucks.

that guy wow! I am on ng+111 and I’ve never thought of that, I just figured she was locked up and Vilhelm new job was to guard where she was kept. I never once thought he tried to kill her it makes sense because when we try to kill her she comes back lol. Neat theory!

That was a part i never really got. She was the head of the Sable church of Londor, and they are all about the age of dark. So why would she even try to link the fire? Or does not linking it make you an ashen one by default?

@@jrutgers77 Remember that you complete the Lord of Hollows ending by linking the first flame with 8 dark sigils. Either way you burn yourself and learn the hard truth. as i recall, an ashen one is one who failed to link the flame.(the desired result didnt come to be) but the memory of the ordeal is real. perhaps Ludleth is no lord but a failed ashen as well. hence his guilt for the charade.

@@codyrisling1718 thanks! i died so much to her that i had to figure out what was the point of this brutal task. vilhelm's attack also made no sense until i thought about his words calling us a seeker of truth. i actually dont think friede knows he couldnt kill her. so he hid her. hes more afraid we will expose his failure to his mistress friede.

@@SmoughTownWhat if Londor, was what happened to everything except Anor Londo? It makes sense. Once the gods are gone, what's left to take over? The hollows in undead burg. The parish, the depths, even in blightown. From there, they propagate. And don't forget, there are knights of berenike, of baldur, and all the other kingdoms that failed and went hollow. You don't hear of Zena, or the 5 finger Delta anymore, do you?

Frieda did THAT to that poor Painter Child, and completely WARPED Ariendell, and caused her own subjects to ROT! She is far more EVIL, than I EVER knew! When I fight her eventually, I may not feel as bad now! She's WORSE than Gwyn!

Her actions weren't right, but they were understandable. She was badly scarred, physically and emotionally, by her failure to link the flame. So her letting the painting rot was likely because she believed no good could come from fire and was trying to protect the inhabitants of the Painted World. She's not evil, just misguided.

I guess it's less of what she physically rules over than just her desire to be a leader of someone, of some people. To have a realm to call her own - more than what it actually is.

@@joevines3428 Yeah I think it probably was very inviting to those who didn't have a place on the outside. The Painter Girl describes how the new one will be as 'gentle' and a 'goodly home'. Glad you like the content, appreciate the support :)

As far as the burning away most of the natural inhabitants are in a state of living decay and defilement, a painful and cruel existence. With the burning away of the painting its inhabitants are either put to rest or reformed in the next painting.

Aye, they are probably reformed, which can sort of be seen with Yorshka since Priscilla would have continued the cycle and been made anew (likely without knowledge of her previous self). That is, if you accept Yorshka as Priscilla, either literally or in a reincarnated fashion.

You know man. I have been trying to say this for a while now and am just putting the pieces together in an order that seems to correlate regarding the painted world of ariandel and its real world counterparts. To understand this i have seen this from the the most superficial possible position (vaati and others) and i have come to this one conclusion that he and the other loretubers are quite wrong about the painted world. The Painted World OF Ariandel is an allegorical symbol of a microuniverse to the same degree as ourselves from that perspective. I have said this to a lot of other people about this fact and the plot devices like the rot and Elfriede's effect on the Painted World. Sister Friede is the toxic feminine nature in humanity with Vilhelm (the etymology of his name comes from the Teutonic language and it translates to resolute defender) which also is the toxic emasculate nature in women seeing that when you approach the chapel from the outside. He is standing on the same side of where Elfriede's position is to where he is which confirms this. The reason why i can say this becuase that the right side/arm/hand is the ultimate representation of masculinity (thor etc). Friede is the bastardization of wisdom through lies and deceit and that brings me to the rot of the Painted World. That rot represents the brainwashing of your very own consciousness by deception. Since everything in this world isnt just thinking as if you are an Effect to be squashed, its always going to be causality then the effected cause. You rot your brain (Painted World) by consuming false idols, news and government. By deception thats what Elfriede's character is. Nothing more and nothing less.
