This song always reminds me of high school, driving around at night with the windows down and the music loud as hell. Nothing to do and nowhere in particular to go, just enjoying being young and having freedom.

I'm more into death metal these days but back as a teenager I fucking loved this album and still own it. While all my friends were into Korn or Slipknot I preferred these guys, TOOL, and Dream Theater. These guys did have one hell of a sound, not many bands sounded quite like them, they had metal influences delivered via the proxy of a hard rock format and couldn't have pulled it off better.

To me this song is one of the many examples of how music can be its own form of therapy, or at the very least, catharsis. My father passed away in 2014 at 55 of brain cancer. My mother passed away in 2019 also at 55 from complications with diabetes and leukemia. My sister & I are rather estranged, and have been for most of the last 13 years. My brother was stillborn in January 1987. That probably all just seems like just a bunch of random sad information fishing for sympathy, but to me it has a correlation to the lyrics.. Once upon a time, I really did think I knew everything. I was 14. I was smarter than everyone. I couldn't wait to grow up, move out, move on, my life would be so much better once I had total control of it, right? Well as I sit here now 13 years later at 27, I find myself longing for that family I so desperately thought I needed to distance myself from. I wish my father would come back, so we could share one more laugh, or watch a Cubs game. I wish my mother were here to leave light on for me and ask me about school, or work, or my friends. I wish I was 8 years old watching The X-Files with my sister, drowning in snacks we stole from the kitchen and hid in a pencil box in her closet. And I wish I could've known my brother. This song both helps me recall those treasured memories.. And also helps me feel like I have something I can relate those emotions to.. that's big for me. Because I don't really talk much anymore. Vent. This rant probably doesn't make that statement seem very convincing. But normally instead of saying something like this, I just stare into space and daydream about my childhood. So I guess I just wanted to share this. Just know if you're reading this, and this song makes you feel this kind of way. Even if I never know you or talk to you, you're not alone.

Once upon a time I knew everything When I stop to think back on everything It all runs away like a memory Once there was a picture of a happy place But I always keep thinking What a great place to leave I'd trade it all To have you all here with me Father when you coming back? Mother leave the light on again. Sister with someone somewhere somewhere Brother Brother Brother Trailer park heaven was a dream to me Cause we had it figured out Simple and not jaded There was a promise of a brighter day But soon it would all fade out [Chorus] When it's something we love that keeps us away, Well it costs even more and its so much to pay. [Chorus]

The greatest acts with the highest amount of musical skill rarely gain much attention. That is why Nickelback Volbeat, Breaking Benjamin, most country music, and pretty much all of pop are so popular. They are simple and appeal to the masses. Now take bands like Alter Bridge, Mastadon, and Dark New Day. Unbelievable skill, but they rarely garnish airplay because their music is too heavy, progressive, and artsy for mainstream rock radio. It's also the reason why jazz, classical, and full out metal acts don't get the accolades they truly deserve.
