Steve clarke is a better manager, gets the best out of his players he has at his disposal, you look at what he done at kilmarnock aswell, got them from relegation to 3rd spot which is basically like finishing first to non old firm clubs, what has southgate done at club level?

Not hard for any manager to be doing better than Southgate. Picks players who don’t even play football for their clubs. Southgate is employed by the FA cause he knows how to talk to the media and that’s it. The fact he’s still in charge for a fourth tournament is mental. Steve Bruce could’ve done a better job with this England squad.

You could argue both managers pick squads consistantly to maintain a "club feeling". Likes of Tierney, McTominay, Dykes dont let Scotland down despite club form or mins. Englands equivalent is Maguire, Phillips and Rashford. Any new player to the squad is like a new signing. Clarke would win the World Cup with the England squad and Southgate would have Scotland go backwards.

Look at Southgates record as manager of Middleborough where as manager of England he has the pick of the best of the best and ues we should have won something with these players but he cannot get them over the line

Gareth Southgate has evolved as a coach. I didn't agree with the original decision to appoint him and England was very negative during the last European Championships culminating in a display that would have shamed old-school Italy. I am not sure whether he has changed his philosophy or whether his improved attacking options have given him a new outlet but he does seem to be getting the best out of the players where other coaches have clearly failed. It seems like representing England these days is no longer a millstone and I credit Southgate with creating that environment. Time will tell whether he has what it takes against the really big name. The French looked good in their friendly against Scotland and right now they look like the European benchmark. Outside of England and France it all looks pretty mediocre. Steve Clark has done well on the back of zero expectations but would that work so well given the pressure that goes with the England job?

Steve Clarke has taken us to 2 tournaments now. England have ut easy. You have elite class players in every position. i mean the pool and the weslth of talent. Ckarke took us from absolute rock bottom and now we are tier one nations league and going to Germany. Look at our group. Spain and Haaland, but we strolled it really. Yeah, definitely Steve Clarke

It’s all good using a statistic comparing Southgate to sir Alf Ramsey but look at the luxury of players Southgate has to choose from. The team can basically pick itself and Southgate still finds a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the big moments. Can’t wait for him to leave.

I suppose the question is how would each fair managing each others National squad. It’s all very well saying Clarke has done well with his limited resources with Scotland, but could he handle the princesses of England?

Clarke would be fine with England. When he was assistant manager at Liverpool, he gave us the 2nd best defence in the league, we just didn’t have an attack capable of scoring plenty at the other end. Kenny was manager but he’s always given Steve the credit for the defensive improvements. If Kenny had stayed and managed Suarez and then Sterling, we’d have won the league. The reason we lost it under Rodgers is that he broke up Kenny’s defence.

Sterling was England's better players as he was one of only 3 attacking players. So everything had to go through him going forward

@@HuwEvans. we didnt qualify because more teams could. Fair enough, last time it was playoffs via the Nations League..this time we bloody earned it the old fashioned way. The likes of Poland, Sweden, and maybe even Croatia, have failed badly in this campaign

@@HuwEvans. Except Scotland are joint top of Group A with Spain and their qualification has little to do with the extra places now on offer. They would most likely have qualified under the old format. And why did Norway (with Haaland and Odegaard) not qualify if it's so easy...?
