I,ve been in a gunshop when I saw a person buy a o/u 410 shotgun he also brought 3000 rounds of the long cartridges I asked him what he was shooting he replied pheasants this was about December when the birds was big and flying high and fast it makes me wonder how many of his birds was injured but keep on flying this person should see this test as should others. thank you Dave.

very rudimentary test to start with as i know there will be better loads than what i was using, but i think you are correct about using them on high birds, more needs to be done to reverse this trend of high birds smaller gauge fad

Dave , very informative video. Here in the U. S. I use a 1/2 oz #8 Shot with an extra full on top and a full choke on the bottom in a Browning. Using Briley chokes and they produce a fantastic pattern at 30 yards. This is my clay shooting gun when shooting a sub gauge course.

Thanks for the input, its a gauge i have never bothered with apart from the odd pot shot with a single barrel bolt action webley and scott when i was very young in my early teens, i know there is more to the 410 and this kind of debate brings the evidence to the table

Great series of films Dave. Please keep them going as there is so much more to test. I have had wads hit the pattern plate at distance before. Soft pellets/wads and long shot columns are a possible reason I think. Take care and have a great season.

Another very good video Dave. My patten testing gave very similar results. The heaviest .410 load I tried was 19 gm , the Fiocchi being the best in my gun. As far I am personally concerned I would only use the .410 for small live quarry at very modest ranges but they are great fun to shoot further out at clays. Looking forward to your 28 bore testing as I think this is the smallest gauge for practical game bird shooting but even that is limited compared to the 12 bore .

Excellent of you to put up this video and encourage people to question the lethality of their .410, in my opinion the small bore craze has gone slightly too far and people need to realise the limitations of lighter weight loads and smaller bore sizes.

It's interesting to see these 410 tests because here in the Western US, 410s are popular as wilderness survival guns and as backcountry small game hunting guns due to the light weight of the shell (very mountainous here so things have to be super light to haul them around). We have lots of .22/410 combo guns here that people put in their canoes, ATVs, snowmobiles, etc. The .22LR barrel on these combo guns extends the range for small game out to 75 yards if needed, while the 410 handles wing shooting to 30 yards or running game to 40 yards. Excellent and effective combination when you have to limit the weight you can carry.

Hi Dave you have just proved a 20 bore is a much better starter gun with a 28 gram load. I have owned lots of. 410,s and even being an experienced shot pest/controller iv never had any success much beyond 25 yards with full choke. Fiocchi or Eley Magnum in 6 or 7 are good upto 25 yards.

.410 is great in the right application. I use one for pigeons with a suppressor because the situation requires little to no noise and it drops pigeons like there's no tomorrow with less noise than my air rifle.

I used to shoot over my spaniels with .410 before i lost the rabbiting ground. Its a well known problem that eley used to be good cartridges but they changed the formula of the powder. There once great 5 shots used to strike fear in to most quarry at sensible distances. They changed the powder but never acknowledged it and after the powder change they were next to useless in my mind. Fut rather than bang! Winchesters 21gm you need a mortgage for at £24 a box though again they where known for stopping things. Then Fiocchi came on the scene with the 19gm 6 which is a 5.5 uk. These are superb and my go to shell for the .410. Rabbit shooting over spaniels is a close quater combat affair and within 15-20-25yds tops depending in ability.. Thoroughly enjoyable with the dogs but you need the skills and reflexes when the rabbit bolts!

@@DaveCarrieShooting thanks Dave. I bought the Yildiz version as it was a MC, and used 3/4 and full. But later changed to full and full as are 99% of fixed choked manufacturers. Since loosing my ground its seeb little use, but treated myself to a grd 5 browning 28g for close quater pheasants on my shoot. This will only be my first full season with it.

Hi David, I regularly shoot 4/10 on driven Game days. My gun is 30 inch, choked at three quarter and Full with Clever Mirage 19.9 gram 5s which would equate to probably an English 4 and a half. The only downside is the plastic wad. The pattern test with 4/10 cartridges between plastic wad and anything else is Chalk and Cheese on tests of my own. A test by yours truly would be of great interest I am sure.

People need realise it's designed for vermin at close range, not sporting game distances. People try and silly wag using one at driven game but I think there a waste of time. A 28bore is much better using a 23gr load at sensible ranges

That spread looks indicative to a rifled set of a smooth bore shotgun. Secondly you didn't kill one of those birds with a pellet which is almost exact same size as one of those shots.

Given that the velocity of a typical .410 cartridge is about the same as a typical 12 bore cartridge, surely the striking energy of the pellets in the same size should be the same?
@DaveCarrieShooting
@DaveCarrieShooting 5 жыл бұрын
i agree, but 18gms of 71/2 does not have quite the same effect as 28grms of 71/2 on the DVD, this is the only difference - 10 more grms looks very impressive at the side of the little 410 load of 18grms , and because of the gaps in pattern the smoke (lead dust impact) is not so noticeable of the small load thanks for your comments DC
@christopherhindle1174
@christopherhindle1174 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I look forward to your comparison of a 20 bore and 12 bore, I habitually use a 20 with 28gm loads, and I believe it performs as well as a 12 with the same load, although there are still many who look down their noses at a 20 bore! Maybe the shot string with a 20 is slightly longer, but I do not see why there should be any other difference in performance. I think the .410 is very much a gun for short range ratting or rabbits, and should not be used for pheasants or similar game.
@driftless1870
@driftless1870 5 жыл бұрын
There’s just no question about it: the 12 g just carries such a heavier load and with more power than those lighter gauges. (Though I’m terribly fond of my 16 g for walked up pheasants.) I do use a nice little .410 I inherited many years ago, but only for the last weekend hunt of the season that we pull those old heirlooms out for a few quail. I’ve heard folks brag about shooting roosters with them, but the wild birds we hunt, especially in late season, deserve a clean kill and recovery to the bag. In my opinion, the little .410 just isn’t up to that task.

A 12 Gauge is no more powerful than a 410 in terms of velocity of the pellets (1100fps to 1300fps for both). A 12 Gauge just throws more lead in a shorter shot column than a 410 which is why it patterns so much better.
@driftless1870
@driftless1870 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnB-dr8sk Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Force equals mass x velocity. Therefore, there IS much more force when more mass is used. Shot strings are variables with barrels, ammo brands, powder charges, chokes, etc. and not necessarily subject to gauge. I personally don’t shoot a 12 g any longer as I’ve become a pansy: too heavy, and too much recoil for my old bones. So, it’s an old 5-1/2 lb or a 6 lb SxS 20 g. double gun that gets drug through the coverts or fields. Especially on grouse, when half of the pellets are absorbed by saplings and brush, a heavier shot load just makes more sense.(Which might be why you don’t find any competitive trap shooters using .410s in their work, and you don’t see them in the north woods for anything other than a novelty.) I catch and release most of my trout, but when I come home from a long day in the field; bird hunting, I want the dogs to have done more than point. I want to put some meat on the table. Hope you are getting out and enjoying the woods yourself this winter. Take care.

I don't like the use of 410s on drive game , even 28s are touch and go , what's wrong with 20,16,12s just use a lighter load and your still able to load heavier shells if the need arises

You’ve kind of contradicted yourself there. Why would you not use the gun that’s designed for the load and patterns best instead of shooting a light load in a bigger gun? People have spent over a century perfecting these guns. 28 bore is as good as a 12 at normal game ranges. 410 is definitely more limited in range and I don’t think anyone has ever suggested you should shoot high pheasants with them.
