David Bowie, need I say any more? the song prevails as we are also taken on a jounry! I wonder if Mr Musk has this as his ring tone? During my reaction I do make comments in regards to his approach in music. A name - sure to live on.

The lyrics are very prescient to todays world if I am interpreting them correctly. "The best selling show" is reality TV (back then in cinematic documentary or movie form) and the narrative it sells which is there to distract us from actual nuanced reality and so in despair Bowie asks if there is life on Mars (intelligent life) "Take a look at lawman beating up the wrong guy," how much does that rhyme with George Floyd's and the much wider narrative pushed through media that surrounds it? "Sailors fighting in the dance hall, oh man look at those cave men go" I believe alludes to older movies that had barroom brawl scenes and takes the perspective of the passive viewer and the moral selectivity and superiority they are made to feel through media. Just my take of course but Bowie was a genius lyricist, far from the goofy random nonsensical lyricist he was happy to portray to the media. Sure, some of his lyrics were purposely nonsensical or trite, but most were very profound. If there is afterlife Bowie probably cringes every time someone says he was pop chameleon and adapted to new genres. The truth is he was innovator right on the cutting edge of everything new and refashioning it for his alter egos to punch into mainstream For example he basically brought new wave into the 80's even though he wasn't the progenitor of synth,. He picked it up from his stay in Germany as a club act and adapted and shaped it into a whole new form that gave rise to entire musical movement with his Berlin trilogy. How many established artists are there that would tap into underground music scenes that would ordinarily come and go and make them something that became embedded in mainstream culture? I find Bowie a fascinating artist, As much as I love what he did and so much of his music I'm still not sure if he was one of the good guys because he was so successful and took so little flak from the establishment despite seemingly being being overtly anti establishment, He certainly had a lot of ties with some very influential people but then so did Huxley and Orwell who wrote ultimate anti establishment dystopian fictions. Fictions we now apparently live in.

Bowie wrote lyrics to old songs for a company they didn’t like the lyrics to a song he did. Paul Anka rewrote the lyrics to the song which became Frank Sinatra‘s my way his biggest hit. Which really upset Bowie so he wrote Life on Mars which became a huge hit for him. Bowie was well read & an artistic Genius. He always pushed the boundaries. He was called the chameleon of rock always changing. Annie Lennox sang Under Pressure with him at Freddie’s tribute concert. Changes is his song. 🔥

I like the fact you started your reaction with recognizing and appreciating David Bowie's personality and intelligence. Yes, he possessed actual substance, not just magnetic physical presence but also depth of mind, sharp way of thinking which he articulated so well. And he had such an interesting sense of humor. A perfect balance for this ever changing artist. One of those people you simply Respect very much although not truly knowing them. I prefer his 80's phase the most but always love to hear his voice and unique videos.

This was also the opening theme to the 2006-2007 BBC show of the same name starring John Simm and Philip Glenister. Incidentally the sequel to that show Ashes to Ashes (also starring Glenister) featured and is named for another Bowie song.

Bowie was his own force of nature. In a very small way he reminds me of Freddie. Neither cared what people thoght of their looks and coustumes. Their self confidence on stage is to be respected. They did what they wanted. Some crtitics have been very harsh on both of them, especially in their early days. Bowie is a very talented man. After a few bars I pulled up the lyrics. I was having a difficult time making out what he was saying. I need to replace my broken headphones! Great reaction, as always. 🙏🏻

Hap, thank you for recognizing the genius that was David Bowie!!🎶 Yes, definitely a cool ass song!! Great song choice Chris👍❤ He created characters and built genres around them. Whe you hear a song of his, you immediately know it's him. He did change with the times. I loved the Heathen album, one of his later works. I sudder to think what our musical landscape would look like without his contributions. I appreciate you reacting to his music...more please. So funny you said the song had you entranced...this song became my favorite Bowie song after I saw him perform it live for Fashion Rocks 2005 in NYC (he only performed this one song alone (he did 2 others w/Arcade Fire) & it had been a year or so after he had a heart attack & had stopped performing). I was actually there to see Duran Duran, but I was SO excited to see Bowie as I had never seen him live before. Tbh, I didn't know much of his stuff beyond the hits, so I had never heard this before. I didn't know if it was old or new. There was one single spotlight on him & he had put makeup on one eye so he looked like he had gotten punched in the eye & he put a fake bandage wrapped around his hand (all part of the vibe). Once he began singing, I was felt like I was in a TRANCE! I can't even explain how crazy it was. It was like no one in the audience could look away for one second. It was as if he put out laser beams & drew us all in to his world! Everyone was absolutely mesmerized. It was AMAZING!!! After that I was like....oh, ok, NOW I get it! I went out the next day to Virgin Records & bought his Platinum Collection CDs. I am really bummed that I never saw him perform a whole live set. I’ve heard this song before yet only watched this video in the past year…it brought me to tears and I still can’t figure out why. Bowie spent a part of his life studying with Buddhist Monks before venturing into music probably had something to do with his Aura being able to transmit energy to so many people. Beautiful Starman✨💫🪐✨⚡️

I learned something about Bowie today. I kept looking at his eyes and wondering if he had weird contracts in or ??? So I Googled it and found " What Bowie actually suffered from is called anisocoria: namely that one pupil was bigger than the other" I had no idea. And yes he was quite intelligent. Good one Chris!

Yes, he was hit in the eye when he was young which caused his pupil to be permanently enlarged.

Give yourself the pleasure of the song he wrote for the band 'Mott the Hoople'. It is called 'All the Young Dudes', and the great David wrote it specifically for them when they felt discouraged🙂 I am STILL sad he is no longer on Earth. Love him so much!!!!...and he has something for EVERYBODY. GOD bless Bowie!❤

Great reaction 👍 This was my favourite when I was young 😊please do David Bowie Moonage Daydream MICK Ronson on the guitar is brilliant also The Last Shadow Puppets do an awesome version of the song. Alex turner ( singer of Artic Monkeys) kills it I must admit I prefer it by them. I'd be interested in your thoughts. My fave of it is in The Spa Brislington as it's a small venue not there usual larger ones. 🙏🤞🤞🙏🤗

What a great and interesting song, unmistakably David Bowie. It was really a clash of different sounds and therefore very colourful. His voice is just special and unique. Never heard this one. The lyrics were sometimes difficult for me to understand and so it was hard to fathom the meaning behind them. But I really liked it. Simply one of the greatest artists who wasn't afraid to stand out with his outfit, to push the boundaries and to try something different with his songs. Would love to hear more of him. But I can see at least one reason to be young again : discovering Bowie's songs for the first time once again, with all the awe, incredulity and excitement I experienced when I first heard them... There was a TV show called Life on Mars that used this as its theme song. A cop was knocked out and in a coma (maybe?) and wound up as a 1970's cop and it looked like a 70's cop show except our hero being from the present time was able to notice the things they were doing wrong in the "70's. It was his perspective looking in as an outsider. I really liked the British version, but not so much the American version. Both used this as their theme.

Wow, that was hands-down one of my favorite show series! Almost no one I know even saw it. I really liked how they used specific lyrics from the song as some of the episode titles, and wrote those episode to reflect the lyric. The actors in it were awesome, and did other movies/shows in which their superb acting was a highlight. Thanks for mentioning this!

@@chicochi3 Exactly - that's what I was talking about with regard to the script reflecting the lyric. Not only the brutish handling of those they arrested, but also the way they treated the woman officer was soooo infuriating! I think the way the show ended was most satisfying and fitting!

This is a song a bout loneliness. About this "girl with the mousy hair... but her mummy is yelling, "No" and her daddy has told her to go...but her friend is nowhere to be seen" a young little girl with no friends and nobody that seems to care about her. So she locks herself in her room and creates stories of "sailors fighting in the dance floor...and lawman beating up the wrong guy" in her mind. And she asks herself "is there life on Mars?" Because the one she has here is not the kindest to her.
