LynchPins is a David Lynch-themed podcast covering a different David Lynch film each month, from least-Lynchian (The Straight Story) to his most "Lynch" work (Inland Empire?? Eraserhead??). Hopefully we can make Lynch's work more accessible to those who've been too intimidated to get into him, but there's also plenty here for the Lynch superfan (you know who you are, you weirdo). Hosted by Maggie Mae Fish and Adam Ganser.
This episode covers Lynch's 1999 family drama, The Straight Story, starring Richard Farnsworth as an old man who drives a riding mower across multiple states to reconnect with his ailing, estranged brother.
Every episode on Nebula is uncensored and extended, plus they drop a week earlier than KZfaq. Join us next month for The Elephant Man (1980).

Mulholland Drive. It might just be the most outwardly Lynchian Lynch film that Lynch has ever Lynched. Plus I just like hearing what people think about the Winkie's scene. You know the one.

Lost Highway is one of the ones that disturbs me most. Honesty, I’m just excited in general. Followed the channel for a long time, and I watch a lot of Lynch. Match made in heaven for me (and I will get the nebula come pay day Friday - I have some Jacob Geller to watch too…) Edit: Inland Freaking Empire - in all the best ways, fuck that film

David Lynch has actually said he considers this his most experimental film because it was shot in sequence on the same road that Alvin Straight himself actually rode on.

31:37 “The conflict is not can he find help; it’s will he accept any help…” I agree. This script easily could have been cloying, but it never is. Instead, it’s subtle and engaging (despite the simple plot), owing in large part to Lynch’s direction. It’s one of the best character studies I’ve ever seen on film.

I also have gone blind enough to not be able to drive and am also likely close to death...hopping on a riding mower and driving it long distances for some spiritual mission is definitely something I could see myself doing. In fact...I recently sold all my meager belongings, built an ebike and a solar powered camper to pull behind it and am just about to embark on a spirtiual journey of my own.

The thing that I love most about The Straight Story is that it is such an unburnished, but earnestly loving portrait of humanity. People are portrayed with quirks and rough edges in full view, but every one of these are shown with such a deep and unashamed affection that shines through just about the entire movie. An absolutely fantastic film and not one to be passed over in Lynch's filmography.

Yeah, David Lynch's work has also inspired a lot of things in the gaming industry. Silent Hill took a lot of inspiration from his work. Believe it or not, even The Persona series took some things from his work with the Blue Room, which is obviously their version of the Black and White Lodges.

I'm so happy you're doing this Maggie lol genuinely. Just finished my Twin Peaks rewatch as well so I'm very heavily in the mood for Lynch. That said, The Straight Stiry is a great place to start. Not only because it's his most "simple" film, but because I really feel more people must see it! Also, I've only now put together just how much you look like Anya Taylor Joy and sometimes sound like Emma Stone, and I feel like I should've noticed that much sooner lol Anyways, I hope to see your script come to life

I saw Eraserhead at a rep theatre in Hamilton Ontario in 1978 when i was 14 years old and it re-wired my head for the rest of my life. I have been obsessed with the man's work since that day (and I LOVE DUNE!!!!) - but 'The Straight Story' is something different - it's not only my favorite of all his films - or any film for that matter - it is my favorite THING in this world (food, album, colour, memory, whatever) - i have watched it more than any other movie in my life - maybe 40-50 times? I can shut my eyes and play the entire movie in my head from memory. When the dog barks, when the bee stings, when i'm feeling sad... I go to this film for solace.... Norm McDonald said he loved this movie and called it 'A Hard G' - which i think is perfect... my friends know not to bring the movie up in conversation or I will go nuts and start weeping like an Irishman at last call... and i think it is his MOST 'Lynchian' thing... the acting by everyone in this film is so beautiful and heartfelt - and it is so slllloooowwww - and Angelo Badalamenti's music is Heaven-sent.... and it's Freddie Francis's last film - it's the 'Easy Rider' for the elderly... Dear God I love this film - thank you for posting this. :)

I felt like aside from not wanting to inconvenience people that the reason he didn't want to go into their house is he's aware of his hygiene, especially because of the trip, and doesn't want to sully their house in that way when they are showing him kindness - and of course struggling to feel worthy of help and wanting to do this trip under his own steam

I love this movie for how warm and inviting most of it feels, like going for a walk or a drive on a sunny day, while also hitting you with deeper thoughts and emotions that stay with you. I'm still not sure how a bunch of executives at Disney saw Eraserhead and thought, "Let's get THAT guy to direct our charming family film about an elderly man taking his lawn mower on a road trip," but I'm glad they did. Anyway I'm excited to hear you talk about Wild At Heart, which I just recently watched for the first time, and Blue Velvet, the problematic fave of bisexual film nerds everywhere.

I SUPER read Alvin's daughter Rose as autistic. Not just "a speech impediment." Which I thought hit extra hard when it was revealed that she had her children taken away from her. I know so many great parents who have autism and it seemed clear she loved her kids. It irked me a bit but the burning building was a firefighting exercise! Y'all kept saying it was a random building on fire, which, fair, but it was a planned burn by the fire department. That's why those people were watching it, it was a scheduled thing. I DO think it narratively brought us back to thinking about how Rose's kid was hurt badly in a fire. It was likely a traumatic/stressful time in Alvin's life where he felt powerless, like how he is losing control of the mower down a hill. I'm looking forward to more episodes :)
