David Simon, Paul Haggis on new HBO mini-series "Show Me a Hero"

“Show Me A Hero” looks back at the struggle over public housing and desegregation in the 1980s. The city of Yonkers, New York, was faced with a federal court order to build low income housing in white neighborhoods. The six-part series follows then-Mayor Nick Wasicsko, who faced fierce opposition from residents during city council votes. Executive producer David Simon and Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis join “CBS This Morning” to discuss the inspiration behind the series.

This show was brilliant, especially Oscar Isaac. The story of the mayor is so tragic and sad. Seven years on and this show is still relevant. I live in New Zealand and we have the same problem here where no one wants public housing in their neighbourhood, but the only reason why is, because they don't screen people, or evict them, no matter what they do. The plan with the public housing idea in this show however, completely works, as they screen the people and they get evicted if they cause problems of an anti social nature, or get arrested for anything. I was reading where kids from this housing project grew up and went to University, etc. This type of housing project works for everyone, the locals and the poor people moving into the housing.

The show is just one of the greatest. David Simon just has that golden touch.

This story is still so relevent! I work housing homeless people and I come up against this all the time. I've had death threats, my kids threatened, been physically assualted.... all becuase of the fear I can see in the residents of Yonkers in this series. I am from Dublin, Ireland and this is still so current!

However, in this story they heavily screened the people going into the nice new public housing in the good neighbourhood. They interviewed them, checked their criminal history, etc. Only the most honest and clean living were chosen and you got kicked out if you committed a crime, didn't follow the rules of the housing complex, etc, and that's how it should be done.

let's add government housing to high-rise penthouse apartments in manhattan. let barry and michelle and their two darling kids (who attend private schools thanks to the taxpayers of this country) have government housing right where they live.
