After about the 4th year of trying to make a ginger bread village with the kids we renamed it to The Train Wreck. It turned out much more fun to make because mistakes were encouraged.

Use Royal Icing to stick your gingerbread house together and use it as the snow decoration on the house and to ‘glue’ on sweets as well. Beat an egg white until fluffy, add icing sugar (powdered sugar) u til mixture is stiff. Store icing in fridge in an airtight container. I loved everything you did in this video. I started making bone broth and I used my turkey carcass from Thanksgiving and it was delicious. I loved your gift wrap too. I love how different your cabin is from your dad's. It's a visual reminder that *anyone* can get interested in such things--it's not exclusively the lifestyle of rugged men and flannel shirts and wood-everywhere dens. I love Shawn's cabin for its rustic, dark, cozy feel, and I love yours for its airy, light, open brightness. Thank you for sharing! Also, thank you for putting in the carrot greens! Most people don't realize they're edible, have a good aromatic flavor, and provide a lot of micronutrients to a broth like this.

Agreed 👍🏻 Chicken broth actually has medicinal properties that help with the common cold, as well as garlic & tumeric 🥰

the secret to getting a gingerbread house to work quickly ... do the glue up in a cold place ... keep the sugar paste warm on a hot plate ... the cold will crystalize the sugar faster making it harden sooner allowing the walls to stand on their own .. once the four corners are glued ... wait 30 minutes or so to let them harden without load ... then add the roof and so on ... just take breaks ... and use the cold to advantage ... I used to do my assembly in the base with a window cracked open ... made a nice cold well and took maybe 2 hours to build a 3 tier castle ... ;)

You two are so adorable trying your ginger bread house.so funny when you said that was obviously a fail and laughed 😅 so cute. Hopefully having been sick your amune system will be stringer for the rest of the winter months and you can stay healthy and enjoy the wilderness and your cute little cabin. Thank you Emily for sharing. Merry Christmas to you and your whole family. Home made bone broth like that is such a healthy source of protein. Over the years I've become a firm believer in Vitamin C. I used to travel a lot for work and could not afford to come down sick so I carried with me , this is the brand name but there are generics, Emergen-C. They are a powder with large amounts of Vitamin C and they will knock a "plague" out of you quickly. You just have to increase your water intake as it tends to work your kidneys kind of hard. Hang in there, keep going and we all look forward to next years visits with you and your family!

I started taking Vit. C about 35 years ago and I have only had 2 colds in the last 30+ years and no flu at all. I also take a multivitamin. I didn't even get Covid from my son and his family when they visited with hugs and all before they found out they were positive.

Take the sink pipe through the cabin wall use circular saw drill cutter to cut hole in cabin wall for plastic pipe to go through don't forget to seal the hole with mastic when pipe is fitted then fit pipe into 45 gallon barrel for the waste water with a tap near bottom of the barrel that you can use to draw off the waste water for your garden

Melt sugar in a cast iron skillet by heating it up. Then put the edge of one of the two ginger bread parts that you want to join in the sugar and then quickly fit the parts together and keep them fixed until the sugar is cooled of. Once the whole ginger bread house is constructed put icing over all the ugly brown sugar. Be careful not to get melted sugar on your fingers - the scars will never go away.

I turned to using big cans of beans (soup) & balled up bread to hold walls in place while the icing stiffened up. A simple pattern the 1st year can easily turn into extravagant designs the years following.

This video has so much to discuss...but first and foremost get well soon. The video of the making of the ginger bread house was amazing. I wish we could have heard the chat during. I think you and your cousin have an amazing teamwork and you could tell in the short clips...or maybe that was shown by choice. At the end when you selectively cut branches off a live tree to add to Christmas/holiday presents just showed that your mother and father provided the guidance or encouragement to understand sensible harvesting of trees and plants. I wish you and your loved ones a very happy holiday and best in the new year....

Word of advice from my younger days when my hair was quite long and I camped out often: Tie your hair back when playing with fire I didn't and a spark hit the bottom and flamed up. Thankfully I had a minor burn and had to have it cut to blend for a while. It could have been so much worse.

A fireplace and stove in one now that is convenient. Reminds me of the old black smoky stoves one side was the wood burner that heated the entire stove and oven plus heated the house.
