I have been teasing this series for a very long time...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a twenty episode retrospective on every Sega developed arcade racing game in 3D! Because whether its retro gaming or modern pc gaming...Sega is the KING of the arcade racing genre! So buckle up and get ready for a retrogaming ride!
THE RULES FOR INCLUSION: 1) It must have had an arcade release (So no Sega GT) 2) It must be in 3D (Bye Bye Outrunners, etc etc) and 3) you MUST be racing against an opponent and not just a timer (sorry Crazy Taxi, Wild Riders)
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,

Up next: Daytona USA 2001 on the Sega Dreamcast! The original arcade racing game that started a franchise and still one of the most beloved Sega arcade retro gaming experiences of all time and it got an enhanced port on Sega retro gaming masterpiece! I can't think of a single issue I have with Daytona USA and I love the Sega Model 2 arcade hardware look and vibe...and its still fun here on Dreamcast! Sure there are newer versions (on Xbox 360 and arcade with Sega Racing Classic which you can run on computers...making it PC gaming lol) but I just love the original from a video game history and nostalgia perspective.
And this would lead directly to Daytona USA 2 and Scud Race...and that's never a bad thing!
I recently added an original arcade PCB to my collection but have not yet modded in controls. You can emulate this on the Model 2 emulator!

Alright, so here’s how you play on a controller pad: Adjust steering sensitivity to around 25-40%, depending on you preferences. You have to choose manual for your car. When approaching a tight curve, drop that gear to 2nd and drift hard. The key is downshifting and turning extra early - earlier than you might think. The end result should be you (relatively) seamlessly drifting around the corner. For a less tight curve, go to 3rd, but same concept applied. Don’t stick in those lower gears for too long - it’s a good idea to shift up soon after entering the drift. It takes a while to get used to, but completely revolutionizes the game after you practice enough to get the hang of it. It adds quite a bit of depth to the gameplay, trying to get the perfect drift and upshifts correct.

@@VideoGameEsoterica Appreciate it! It's not easy and takes a lot of practice to get just right. It's a delicate combination between slamming the brakes, downshifting/upshifting, and managing your turn, but when it comes together, you feel like a champ. It's just good to know that the game is nicely playable with a controller pad (and patience).

Spot on! Great comment. This is muscle memory for me now so I just assumed that everyone else knew this as well. SEGA were never that great at translating arcade racing game controls to control pad for some reason (Sega Rally 1 & OG Daytona on Saturn excepted, which were amazing). Sometimes it felt like they never play tested their later racing game conversions properly before release.

Absolutely loved it when this got released on the Dreamcast. Bit tricky at first until you sort out the deadzone on the controller but if you use that crappy DC steering wheel it works like a charm. There's a widescreen mod you can use if you run it through Redream as well.

@@VideoGameEsoterica It's the same with F-Zero GX - you need to go into the controller settings and max-out the range on the stick, or else things are twitchy as hell with the insane sensitivity/deadzone. Spookily enough emulating the original Daytona USA requires the same controller tweaks. It's like they're all defaulted to steering wheel sensitivity, as @goonerlee found out.

@@DaveFallows Yeah that's true. I've tried the DC Daytona, the ones running on Model 2 and the ones on Technoparrot and they all have that really sensitive steering. Scud Race too. I think it's something to do with some steering wheels turning a full 360 degrees and others only turning 180 but don't hold me to that. Funnily enough though the Daytona on Model 3 emulator can be tweaked and it works pretty good so who knows.

I'll be honest, Daytona USA and Sega Rally 2 on Dreamcast were two giant disappointments for me. Sega's decision to do another Daytona port rather than porting Daytona 2 made no sense, either. A lot of their decisions in the late 90's really baffled me, like the decision to save VF3 for the Dreamcast, making people wait 3 years to play it.

Sega should have set the default sensitivity setting to the left on the sensitivity slider in the options. Setting it where they did needlessly made a bad first impression on people. Here are a few suggestions: 1) Move the sensitivity slider almost all the way to the left, maybe about two or three notches or so from the left. That's about where the default setting should be. See how well that works, then go back to the options to adjust the steering wheel afterwards if you still feel it's necessary. I typically keep the steering setting as is. 2) Certain cars are better suited to certain tracks. The Lightning, for example, works best with simple tracks while lighter cars work well with tracks that have several tight turns like Seaside Street Galaxy. 3) Selecting the right tires for the right cars also improves control and handling. The Lightning handles more easily with the softest tires. 4) The rear tires spin out when pressing the gas before the car straightens out on your racing line. They also spin out when pressing too far and too quickly on the gas, whether at the starting line or coming out of a turn. Let it get into position as you come out of a turn before accelerating and figure out how quickly to accelerate coming out of each turn. Several turns require feathering the gas and/or brakes. You should be able to get the spinning out under control. All these steps together will help when practicing to figure out when and where to feather the gas and brakes and when to powerslide. Although the vehicle physics and handling aren't like the original, that's OK. They still have an arcade-like feel unlike Championship Circuit Edition. After awhile it played like a dream for me. I forgot about any comparison to the original as I could now appreciate and enjoy the vehicle handling on its own terms. This while using the Dreamcast controller. Heck, with practice, the Lightning might even be more controllable on some of the other tracks.

I could now drive normally. I have a couple of steering wheels for DC; the official one and a Thrustmaster wheel and pedals which are supposed to be very rare. This remake was developed by Genki, who made some great games, but mostly developed budget games. They also did the notorious VF3tb Dreamcast port. So it seems like Sega wanted a quick and dirty rerelease of Daytona 1 for easy money and weren't too fussed about the quality. Also possible by then that Sega didn't have the source code of Daytona? So Genki would be replicating the handling by feel.

Oddly enough, I've only really started getting into this game very recently, over the past 6 months or so. My interest in my DC was revitalized with the availability of component cables for the first time and DAMN does this game look fantastic on a CRT with component. While I agree that the controls are very twitchy at first, I do think you can adjust to them with the DC controller and default settings. That being said, this game is HARD when it comes to the more difficult sections...but you know, par for the course for Sega. I might have a bigger gripe with the controls if I were dedicated to 100 percenting this game, but as of now, I play it much more like you would in the arcade: casually in spurts of approximately 30 minutes or less. For that kind of gaming, this game is damn hard to beat.

That said, physics and controls at first might seem nothing like the arcade but the more you play the more you feel the DNA is there. Controls are a mess, but if you decrease sensitivity and adjust dead zones you can definitely play it with a pad. There's plenty of secret and unlockable content to keep you entertained. @@VideoGameEsotericait could happen if Sega gets back the rights or rerelease them under a new name like they did with Sega Racing Classic, but I’m afraid only Daytona USA will be ported since it’s the most popular and well known of the series. I’d be happy if at least they rereleased the PC ports of Daytona USA and Championship Circuit upgraded to run on a modern PC and various improvements so that it could be modded to include more content from the other games of the series

@@VideoGameEsoterica The only hope is that fans do the same that they're doing with Sega Rally and make a remake by themselves. If you don't know there's a Sega Rally fan remake called Over Jump Rally that recreates the original arcade game in Unreal Engine 5 that is currently being made for the PC.

I've never really warmed to this port; the controls borderline spoil it for me. I think you can deaden the twitchiness on some racing wheels (which might help), but it's better in the arcade and even the 360/PS3 ports. Holding out hope for some sort of game-hack where someone "corrects" the controls.

@@VideoGameEsoterica I bought a wheel specifically to play this port of the game, but it still didn't feel right. I'll give it another go one day; great video as always. By the way; tried the recent Daytona Championship USA (2017) in an arcade a few weeks ago and that didn't feel right either 🤣

Play around with the settings in the options menu. You can change the feel around a bit. 2017 is a fun but flawed game for sure

It's 100% made for the DC wheel, all the twitchiness will be gone if you can get your hands on one. Hated this on release but with the DC wheel the handling will be pretty close to the original and for me went from disappointing to possibly contender for best DC racer. If you've ever emulated an Arcade racing game that doesn't have pad support that's how Daytona USA 2001 plays on DC, like the devs made zero concession for pad players (iirc the sensitivity setting in the western version was added because of complaints after the NTSCJ version released). Also, there's a version of this that has the arcade OST modded back in, worth hunting it down. If you do get a DC wheel then look up the Ben Ryves 'de-deadzone mod' it elevates the racing experience a lot

@@VideoGameEsoterica Absolutely, one of the strangest decisions I've ever seen and it should have been tuned for both the controller and wheel play with controller as priority. The strangest part is that Sega perfectly translated the F355 Arcade steering wheel handling on Dreamcast, showing they were more than capable/aware that pad controls need consideration
