I got hooked on the JF:17 very versatile featuring: datalink, IFF, long range MIL cruisemissile, anti-ship. Very much equal to the F-18C. At present my plane of choice.

I have already been flying it for a week and I can say that it is worth each one of the dollars that it cost me, gladly pay the full price for what it deserves.

As much as i love my Jeff and being new to DCS i appreciate this open and honest review. Part of paying for DCS modules is you’re paying for detail and you point out where it’s lacking. Hope the devs take this feedback seriously

Btw, ECS is modelled to some extent. If its too cold or hot outside and you don't set ECS properly, The pilot will shiver to death or die from heat stroke depending on weather

NOTE: the graphic or texture guy from DIS was in hospital for a while. Might explain why the texture looks unfinished.

I dont see anything wrong with the 3d modelling of the outside of the plane. Details are pretty exquisite in fact both mesh and textures, im rather impressed. It just isnt a particularly pretty plane. Its dull. Unlike say the tomcat. Even a poorly modeled F14 will look good. The interior also looks a bit dull and "new", part of the charm of the tomcat cockpit is the amazing weathering effects. But making the jeff cockpit look as it if has suffered 10 years of abuse is probably a bit silly. Some parts to look a little too factory fresh though, particularly that throttle looks like no one ever touched it yet, but that is probably work in progress, and simply missing textures as on some of the other cockpit elements.

ED need to look at BMS Falcon. They modelled the ordinance dropping from the pylons very well. The airframe shudders on a drop of any ordinance and the wings flex after the weapon leaves the station. Missiles flex on the pylons when viewed from the cockpit, especially big missiles like HARM, Harpoon and the Sparrows and AMRAM. Touches like that make you suspend disbelief!

I just simply love the jeff, yes some bugs but i really love to fly a plane rather than that from the US or Russia. And the missiles are promising 🙌. I would agree the cockpit modelling and texturing seems rather low, but I find the external model and textures looks comparable to the F-16 and F-18 at the least, which is to say pretty good. But the interior modelling is what has held me back from getting this module.

Today i picked jeff for trial, it's super intuitive and fun, i like the short HUD shape, everything feels compact and maneuvering with this feels godly, never had same experience with any of the planes i tried, definitely will pick this one up to keep i guess

BTW, something you are not testing at all which is a bit of a shame is performance. Not of the plane, but framerates. It would be interesting to have a standard test where you sit on the tarmac amd switch from one cockpit to the next and measure framerates. Thats not an unimportant consideration when buying a module.

I've been really wanting this one and I tried it during the free trial period. Some of the textures are bland. I agree about sound as well. Right from launch I complained about the sound on this module on Deka's videos. I use a vibration system (inexpensive home made) and it feeds on audio so it needs good sound like the F14.

The navigation suite is actually out of a contemporary luxury jet like a cessna citation.. a lot of things in this plane were outsourced to different countries besides China and Pakistan and I think france did the avionics integration. It was designed to be cheap and capable and it meets both standards... very much a spiritual successor to the early Migs in that regard.. Think il have to pick this up during the Xmas sale, I love how intuitive the systems look

As for the external model textures I’m thinking what’s throwing you off is that it’s too clean looking. The F-14 has lots of weathering. And grease and oil stains in its texture. It just makes them look more real

I think the video sums up the JF-17 pretty well. Question: do we know already what the mystery DCS module will be? Personally, I would not mind if the current number of GR subscribers would contain a hint. Just dreaming.

Cap, I found that it is very difficult to read MFDs at daytime (F/A-18 and other modules). Sun glare is just too much. In real life pilot could shield the screen with his hand or arm and block the sunlight. This is not possible in DCS. It might be realistic lighting but I do not want to fly upside down just to be able to read the MFDs. Is there a solution / do you have the same issues? I played with gamma etc but it did not really help.

Close up externals look pretty good, but there is something I can't put my finger on when you zoom out. Something transitions, details get soft and that detracts from it slightly.

Essentially with the audio, these guys should stop mimicking ANR headsets that pilots actually wear out at least have the on/off option. As a suggestion to you, it would be nice if you could collaborate with RC on these reviews. I like listening to you, but it would be great to listen to what RC thinks a lot more too, otherwise why is he even there? Also, I like the quality of this plane, I just don't like the design... And I think there's a bit of that thrown into your comments of it, or at least that what I interpret.

The sounds in a modern jet are quiet though. I work on modern fighters and you can be sitting in the closed cockpit, with the engine off, and no ear pro and you'll be able to hear the fuel sloshing in the tank behind you with another jet taxiing a 30 meters away.

Cap my theory of the older aircraft is the the older computers if you are willing to call them that were more like old cars brain boxes. If you don't do something in a particular way you will not get the responses you are looking for. In other words like a older automated system each switch or dial would set a pin locking it into a disk that would set up for each of the fallowing dials options or choices. Now with a modern aircraft it is more automated and easier to use. For new examples from America will be the F-35A/B/C, F-15 EX, F-18 G, and A-10D currently in production.

Deka had access to the real life training simulator of the aircraft which was the primary source of information, they even recorded button flick sounds in the cockpit from the simulator (and not the real plane to be precise). They haven’t disclosed whether their FM was critiqued by any real life JF-17 pilot. They remain silent every time somebody brings this question up. I love this module but I really wish we could get hints on this plane’s FM authenticity.

Its made by Chinese and Pakistani airforce collaboration team. Pakistani airforce has already F16. So, Pak airforce knew, what they need after having F16 and they tried to bulid aircraft cheaper, modern and easier to operate. Pakistan's owned 60% and china owned 40% of this aircraft. This aircraft was demand of Pakistani airforce to build it, not china. In future Pakistan is also going to build 5th generation aircraft soon.

Deka should have given a better manual and it is unfortunate that there is no English natops manual, but for most users the JF-17 guide (and other guides) from Chuck will do just fine.

I'll take 5 JF-17s that allow me to keep frames over 1 x F-14B knocking 20FPS off every time. Top quality visuals are one thing, but when you have to change all your graphics settings for one plane is quite another IMHO. Though I suspect it's just me. Frame rate > Visuals

I need a fighter! Someone help me. I have the viggen, which I know inside and out, the harrier, which I know about 80%, the gazelle and the ka50 both of which I know very well, p51, and the fc3. I am stuck between the m2000 and the jf17. I really don't want an f18 or f14. What do you guys recommend. Or wait on the euro fighter.

Well it doesn't "look" like an F14 because it's NOT an F14. You should learn to appreciate airplanes for what they are individually, in a vaccum, and not compare it against other aircraft. This is a review, not a comparison.

Kinda annoyed that the airborne refueling boom is stuck in the deployed position. Bet that hurts top speed and acceleration by a good bit.

The mirage FBW is intrusive? What? The mirage's FBW limits you way less than the F16 or F18, it's only function is to stop you from going into a flat spin. Other than that it won't limit your turn radius unlike F16/F18... Feels a bit like you're bashing any thrid party devs nowadays and only liking what ED puts out. Not really impartial...

Why cant they add the gun sounds for each respective aircraft?

🤣🤣🤣🤣 can you imagine atc asking for a speed check hold on tower let me listen to the wind. Nothing wrong with the jef sounds

The biggest let down in this thing is the atrocious gun. In any other aircraft you press a single button on your hotas and you get the gun up, ready to fire. In this thing you have to take your hands off to press the button on the MFD to load the gun, which you can only do 3 times and it takes forever, and 3 seconds really is a long time when you need the A/A gun. And then you only get 180 rounds, which is basically nothing for both A/A and A/G. The might as well not have bothered putting one in in the first place. The T-POD seems way too good. The missile warning is so soft and muted and non-urgent sounding that I often don't even notice before I blow up. The MWS only being rear facing is also somewhat of a let down. The software package is fine. I like the navigation. The autopilot can actually fly at an altitude that you set instead of holding the current one like any other aircraft we have right now, which is really handy. I wonder why the F16 or F18 don't have that most basic of modern A/P features. There are some quirks, like the relative bearings or using true headings instead of magnetic headings. It's just weird. I don't like it very much, it's just so different, especially the control scheme. The radio is horrible. who needs 200 radio channels? That's ridiculous. And changing them is complicated and unintuitive. They should've gotten rid of 180 of them and used the memory for something more useful, like more waypoints. The datalink is fine, but the symbols are way too huge and the labels on them are way too tiny, cluttering up everything and not giving the information you need at a glance at the same time. Also having one radio tied up with datalink, you only really have one working radio. You can use the datalink radio for voice, but only with other jf17s, so having a radio set to awacs leaves you basically deaf to anyone else.

Agree about the MFDs, learning the F18 right now the the display/menu system is a UX nightmare. Whoever designed them that way should go back to school and relearn basic user interface design.

JF-17 overall review: Underwhelming

In my opinion DCS going with this plane was a waste of time, its my least favorite aircraft. Its just boring and its a weaker version of the F-16. If DCS wanted to experiment with Asia's fighter jets there were so many others to choose from (Nanchang Q-5, Xi'an JH-7 or even the Chengdu J-10) Pakistan mostly uses F-16s and Mirages which DCS already has. But anything but this boring aircraft.

There's a Problem with this Module. Its Bullsh1t. Autopilot "FlybyWire", can't control the Sharp Aggressive Moves made by a Fighter Jet. An Airliner, Doesn't Make Sharp Aggressive Moves. Furthermore Amram Aim 120 - Don't Work. The Adversary will Just Deploy Flares and Chaffs to Jamm Radar and Infrared. Illuminate the Ground with a Laser and a Missile will Shoot you out of the Sky. The Mirage M2000C Module is better. That Module has Heat Seekers (2 KM) and Semi Active Radar (7 KM) Missiles. The Pilot - Illuminates the Adversary. Chaffs and Decoys won't Work. The Module uses Manual Free Fall Bombing. The M2000c Module is not FlybyWire.
