Just goes to show every man has his limitations and is smart enough to realize it. I don't blame Ray for sending this thing to the dealer especially if there is possible liability involved in unchartered territory.
@wjsj69
@wjsj69 Жыл бұрын
It's common for manufacturers to have proprietary procedures and computers for those procedures that aren't available to non-dealerships. It's not Ray's limitations, it's an industry blockade to ensure that they make money on repairs, keep their tech from being copied, and prevent tampering and/or damaging. It's what "right to repair" laws, that people are fighting for, are about. It's a bigger deal with the farming industry bc they need to be able to get their eqmt. up and running, especially when a dealer isn't available, and planting or harvesting timing is critical. But it should also trickle down to the public's ability to repair their own car instead of being over-charged and delayed by dealerships. Especially after warranty periods. Before computer control, this wasn't an issue.

@@wjsj69 I knew an after market BMW repair shop. It cost him $25,000 a year to have access to their schematics and ECM downloads. BMW owners who raced their cars could not get access to the information they needed to comply with SCCA rules for classes that required a shop manual. This Mini owner probably had to take out a loan to pay for the repair.

That 3.84V is likely a bias voltage that the PCM uses to monitor the circuit and is part of the transistor driver circuit. Seeing it on all of the other working injectors means confirms it's most likely normal. Seeing that 3.84V on the ground wire verified your wiring integrity to/from the PCM without having to do the extra test with the light bulb you did. You have to be careful on a diagnosis like this. Your diagnosis could be very well be correct but there could be another reason for the miss (base engine, i.e. low compression, valve issue, etc.) and the computer is seeing the miss and purposely shutting off the injector to save the catalytic converter. This is a common strategy and has duped many a technician into incorrectly diagnosing a bad PCM. I would clear the codes and restart the engine with the noid light plugged in and see if it flashes for a short period before shutting off. I would also have verified that the new injector wasn't open circuit. Just because it's new doesn't mean it's good.
@ferrumignis

Great comment, and I fully agree. Ray was a little hasty in drawing conclusions on this, hopefully it doesn't bite him.
@aperson9495
@aperson9495 Жыл бұрын
I doubt the ECM is shutting off the injector due to the misfire. I imagine it's not totally impossible, but seems unlikely. If that was the case, odds are it would have shut down #3 when he pulled that to check the noid light on that circuit. The 3.83v is from a pull-up resistor, and the ground trigger that fires the injector is from a MOSFET. More likely, it's a failed MOSFET. Clearing codes wouldn't have hurt, bit in this case, I doubt it would have made a difference.
@johnaclark1
@johnaclark1 Жыл бұрын
@@aperson9495 it's absolutely shutting down the injector. I've seen it numerous times. It needs to see it for more than a moment before it will shut it down, though. But when the check engine light flashes it knows enough to shut it down. That strategy is very common to protect the cat.
@adampyro834
@adampyro834 Жыл бұрын
@@johnaclark1 i dont know about these things but would it not shut the injector down by removing the voltage from that wire? otherwise it would still work... however i would think the higher voltage was pulsing in time to make the injector fire in time and i am sure ive seen pulses checked before, if there were no pulses ecu isnt sending them... wish i knew electrics more...

@@adampyro834 I haven't looked at a diagram but it likely has 12v coming straight from a fuse and the PCM provides a ground to turn it on. That's called ground side switched. The PCM doesn't control the power, just the ground.

I have one of these things (05 Cooper 5MT with 92k on it, bought with 83k) and have basically had every system apart at one point. Engine and trans out, dash out for an Evap core, window regulators, removed the seats for a thorough detail, reupholstered the headliner, rebuilt the trans in my garage, replaced the radio with a junkyard unit, built HVAC controls from 2 broken ones, etc. It is one of the most baffling little cars to work on. These were the most expensive cars in their class when new, yet the build quality and materials, engineering, etc. was nowhere near a similar Japanese car of the era. The plastics are so brittle, creaky and cheap that they almost make GM plastics of the 90's look like quality by comparison...almost. The outright mistakes and blunders made by the Rover/BMW/Chrysler/Getrag engineers are as numerous as they are tragic for the owners. It is as if it was a first attempt at building a car by a new firm rather than one designed by companies with a long history that should really know better. I love mine because of the driving dynamics, but would advise anyone else not to own one. As bad as a VW can be, these are far worse as any job you need to do requires significant disassembly and pricey parts (any engine accessory is a rad support out job). I bought it out of hubris since I was bored with my Japanese cars and felt I could fix anything. I thought I could make it reliable... I was wrong. I am just lucky that I don't need to use it as a daily as my much higher mileage Toyota (133k) and Nissan (426k) can fulfill those roles far better. Now where'd I put that engine hoist? The drivetrain, suspension and steering have to come out again so I can fix a failing transmission bearing. Again.

The likely reason you are seeing voltage on the 'ground' side of the fuel injector connector is because that is not ground at all. What it is would be the connection to a transistor that pulls the negative side the fuel injector solenoid to ground when the ECU commands it on. The transistor gate drive circuit in the ECU is likely failed. (I repair ECUs as a side gig)
@n.shiina8798

Nope, if that were the case then why are all four injector drivers outputs identical in terms of this behaviour? This ECU uses a smart integrated injector driver rather than discrete transistors, it's most likely designed behaviour so that both open and S/C to ground faults can be detected.

My last pair of glasses had transition lenses which, as I think you meant, don't work inside a car, so they are useless for driving (previously I always used clip-ons); I actually have a pair of eBay clip-on sunglasses I used for driving; yes clip-on sunglasses over the transition lenses. Do not apologize for short videos. It's good that you are showing your audience the analog way of proving a circuit path is good, and how to test for load capability. Too often today, with the complex design of a vehicle, many folks rely only on the scanner, and if the scanner does not point them to the issue, many techs/mechanics give up. (at least, in my location, northern Missouri, they do.) I still think it would be a good idea for someone graduating from school for employment in your field, to be assigned as an apprentice to someone such as yourself with many years of experience. That way, the individual is trained correctly in all aspects of troubleshooting a complex motor vehicle, both digital and analog. Keep the videos coming please, I look forward to them daily.

The reason you're seeing a voltage on the ground side of the injector connector, is that it will have a pull-up or be floating, unless the injector is being activated. So the voltage you're seeing is from the pull-up of the driver circuit.

You are correct there's a pull-up resistor to keep the line at 3.45 volts approximately. When it goes to fire off the injector it pulses to ground. The reason for the 3.45 volts is you don't want the injector to get an intermittent signal to inadvertently fire off the injector. Pulse that is created to fire the injector originates from the output side of a fet transistor
@mmanner
@mmanner Жыл бұрын
@@846368846368 This comment is still valid. Injector signal is propably floating when injector is not there to pull it up to 12v. With injector(or even that light bulb tester thingy) attached i'd expect there to be 12 volts on signal wire if ecu doesn't pull it down. Also even on working injector signal there might be only small change to value on multimeter as duty cycle is propably low at idle and multimeter displays only some kind of average value from what it measures. Also Rays diagnosis is perfectly fine and this wouldn't change result here as everything still points to bad ECU. But small details like this can still make it feel lot less weird and sometimes even point to problem lot faster. I could even make guess on what actually could be wrong inside that ecu after watching this video.

Hiya Young Ray, some years ago I had a Honda Legend (Accura in the states perhaps ?) 3.2 V6 flying machine but that also had its crank pully come apart.. I could not get one locally so resorted to epoxy bonding glue , replaced the outer pulley back in place, and as access was limited, made a long extended tapping sized drill to drill inbetween the V`s of the pulley, from above the engine front/ radiator, made a long extended tap, tapped the hole, screwed in a grub screw to below the bottom of the pulley V`s, drove that for many miles until it got sold.. Not an Ideal repair but cost me nothing as i had everything used in its repair..BUT thanks for the video yet again.. Ian - UK.

@@cyberfunk3793 If there was a short to power, something would be smoking or fuses would be blowing. When you measure open-circuit voltages, you need to keep in mind that it takes only 400 nano-amps (0.0004 mA) of leakage current for a DMM with 10M input impedance to show 4V, hardly anything at all. You need a DMM with low-impedance input or an application-appropriate load resistor (say 10k for 5-30V) to make sure you aren't being mislead when measuring power, ground and switched control lines.

The circuit has about 3 volts on it probably so the computer can detect whether the line to the injector has shorted or not. A 10k or 100k ohm resistor from the line to a positive voltage to pull the line up when the MOSFET is not active allows the computer to test for a few short conditions. It can test if the line is shorted to ground, test if the line is shorted to battery positive and test if the MOSFET is actually pulling the line to ground to fire the injector like it is supposed to, which in that case it is not. Also, if the line were left floating when the MOSFET was off then it might be subject to interference that could kill the MOSFET...

We had a rule at the dealership I worked for. 80k miles and they went to the auction. This applied to all German makes. One in particular that I remember had about 85k and had a minor oil leak. Once the tech started peeling the onion it got expensive really quickly. It spent a month in the shop and we lost thousands on it. Otherwise the car looked brand new. I’ve seen some nasty repair bills on some of those cars. SMG failures, VANOS failure, air suspension failure, BCMs, ECMs, etc. It puts it into perspective when you see a 2005 Highlander with 325k come in and all it needs is an oil change and wiper blades and the same day a BMW with 92k needs $8k worth of work. I have a good customer at my current job who had a late 90’s 5 series. He owned it from new and it had about 150k on it when he sold it, but he said that the last 5 years it cost him roughly $4k a year to keep it running, not including gas and insurance. The car was absolutely spotless but it ran like crap most of the time.
