I think you're the best mechanic on youtube. You do every hard thing there is that's needed to be done, you do it the right way, and you don't lie to or cheat the customers. And you never get a bad attitude about the hard stuff you do all day. Honestly you oughta open your own shop - the word would spread and you'd be fixing everyone's car in 100 mile radius in no time.

Unfortunately, not all mechanics can afford to be this thorough. If every mechanic went to these same lengths, either the shop, the mechanic, or the customer would lose money. The extra time has to come from somebody's pocket. Luckily Ray has his KZfaq channel and all of our views to foot that extra cost, so Ray is able to work to his full potential rather than having to worry about nickel and diming in order to survive.

Great grease monkey knowledge and hack approaches, which works great for shade mechanics like ourselves.

about 3 years ago here in the uk a friend of mine had a ford smax (2.0 duratec) he had a stuck oil control ring on no 4 cylinder and it was drinking about 1 pint of oil every 10 miles. he had just lost his job and had very little money. i did what ray did there and added a compression test. because he didn't have much cash and was going to scrap the car (no loss it trying something different) i came up with a idea, i went to the petrol stn and got 40 ltrs of e5 petrol came back and added 1/2 ltr of acetone to it then pulled the spark plugs and set pistons no 1 and no 4 to the bottom, drained the oil replaced the sump plug disconnected the battery and" put the petrol in where you usally put the oil" as he said, checked the dipstick to see if the level was above piston 4 and left it 4 days to have a good soak. then drained it out. put some 2 stroke oil in down the spark plug holes and had rotated the engine 360 degrees (very slowly to break up any sofened sludge in the piston ring gaps and the vibration on the pistons going up n down to help break up the carbon). then refilled the crankcase back up with the fuel id just drained out and filled it back up above piston 4 left it again another 3 days. then drained it all out (the fuel that came out was black/sludgy) left it for 1 hr then replaced the sump plug. then put in some 0w40 (thin oil) and used a drill and socket to turn the engine over at the pulley (get the oil flowing round the engine).. drained that out then changed the filter and put some castrol magnatec 5w30 oil (quality stuff) in to the correct level, reconnected the battery put the plugs back in and started it. he used it daily for 1 month and no oil burning. he had to sell it due to funding. he didn't even get chance to advertise it as the next door neighbour to him baught it as hed watched us doing all this work.(and seen all the muck&sludge come out when i drained the petrol/acetone out) still going strong to this day as his family car and still not burning any oil. not a good way to do things but if youve nothing to loose and your condemming the engine due to a stuck ring worth a try. paid off for him.

I did something similar when I worked at a used car dealer in the 70s. Vehicles were often purchased from the Chicago auto auction. Chicago area drivers were famous for never changing the oil so stuck rings were often a problem causing one spark plug to foul. I would turn the engine to get the piston on the cylinder part way down then pour a mixture of transmission fluid and acetone into the cylinder and let it sit for a couple of days, refilling every couple of hours during the workday. Then the engine oil was drained, filter replaced and automatic transmission fluid installed instead of oil. Run the engine at 1,000 rpm for 30 minutes then change oil and filter again this time using Valvoline racing oil because it was an oil that didn't foul spark plugs easily.
@johnhanes5021
@johnhanes5021 Жыл бұрын
I saved a few oil burning, stuck ring engines. I drained the oil, put the drain plug back in, removed the spark plugs, on a V-8 I filled it with diesel fuel until it ran out the spark plug holes, let it sit a few days turning the engine over slowly by hand every so often. After replacing the oil with some Casite oil flush aditive in it ( the thin clear liquid solvent type), I ran it for awhile and drained it again for a normal oil change. Worked very well several times. The old 50's and 60's engines varnished up all the time.

For what it’s worth, I saw a video recently on another channel that talked about Toyotas specifically where owners stretched the mileage between oil changes near the maximum of 10K miles. As miles accumulated, over 100K, the oil rings (particularly on the end cylinders) become fouled and stuck and are no longer able to control cylinder wall oiling. It looks like this car may be suffering that from that malady. The creator of that video urged owners to change their oil more often as the 10K spec was the maximum interval spelled out in the owner’s manual.

Oil change interval was 3000 miles on the wife's 2007 Camry - purchased new, and I changed the oil myself - so I know it wasn't neglected. I even drew out the extra 1/2 pint of dirty oil thru the drain plug with a vacuum pump each time - drain plug is higher than inside of oil pan. Started burning oil badly at 100,000 miles, but I switched to10W-40. Oil usage dropped tremendously. I was really disappointed with Toyota on this one, and it will be driven into the ground. My step father had the same model year and the exact same misfiring issue but on cylinder 3, and it was at almost the exact same mileage. This was sometime in 2017 and Toyota dropped a whole new motor in his car under warranty due to some recall. Now, that said, I believe his issue was related to a failed cylinder head and not a failed ring but it may be worth a look to see if I'm right or just losing my mind in my old age. He still drives that car, too, it has almost 300k miles, but obviously on its second motor.
@JasPlun
@JasPlun Жыл бұрын
Carcarenut has a lot of videos on this issue and the majority were caused from people doing oil changes every 10k instead of 5k. Every brand has ran into issues, but Toyota still seems to have the least problems of all brands so I stick with them. We had bad luck with a 2015 Ford Fusion 2.5l had this issue and was a cracked cylinder head at 22k miles. We babied that car too and then at 50k miles misfires begand again so back to Toyota we went and now own a 2020 Camry SE. I will still trust a Toyota over any brand when it comes to reliability.

And measuring current going to the cylinder 4 coil with an oscilloscope, graphing it, comparing it with current going to another coil, would've shown that it was indeed some kind of sparkplug behaviour causing the misfire.

I like the way you went the extra mile for this guy, looking for something less likely. I am surprised you didn't do a compression or leakdown test when you had the plugs out. Old school and time consuming, but hard to dispute results if compression for cylinder 4 is in the toilet. If compression is low, you don't need to wonder about leaking injectors or valve stem seals.
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 Жыл бұрын
I suspect it's because the symptoms pointed towards either a valve stem seal, stuck injector, or a bad oil ring, and if the compression rings are still working, a compression test wouldn't show anything useful - unless it's a bad head gasket (between oil passage and combustion chamber), but then you'd expect the misfire to be all the time, not just at part load.

Oh yes, its a huge mistake not to change your oil frequently! I own 2 cars with the Toyota 1FMZE V6, (2002 Camry, 2001 Solara) and I bought em right before the infamous "sludge engine" recall. The problem was the people that followed Toyota's oil change schedule were inevitably gonna have problems due to improper PCV system design, that created large quantities of sludge that eventually affected engine operation. These problems could easily be avoided though if you did the smart thing, ignored Toyota's excessively long oil change intervals and changed oil at 3/3000 (instead of the 7,500 Toyota said to do). I could have gotten a new engine under the recall, but I figured since I'd been ignoring the Toyota schedule anyway, there was really no reason to take it in. And 2 years later, engine has over 200K on it, still uses no oil, and runs almost like new -

I see a few comments in here about running a compression test - absolutely pointless to do so, given the scoring on the cylinder wall. Only solutions are rebuild the engine, replace it with a new or good used one, or drive it until it dies. Given it’s a thirteen year old car and they’ve just probably spent $400 on it to determine the fault, I’d live with it or scrap it for parts.

Speaking of the fun in swapping. Why most all manufacturers take pride in cramming 6 pounds of goodies in a 5 pound bag? Splian it please. Also why could I-6 manual 4 speed Chevelle get 33 MPG and a Trax can barely do more? I guess that is progress. Definably 1/2 a car for 10 times the price. I also have driven many I-6s to the bone yard because the body was badly ate up. BUT really do you need a car that talks? Has a entertainment center when there is plenty of that in front of you. Seems what we have here is a fashion problem.

In 1966 a basic I6, 4 speed chevelle cost $2,800. It had 120 gross horsepower, or roughly 85-90 hp net. I question 33mpg, but I’ll give you that. I’ve only driven V8 cars from that era that were 15-18 mpg at best. If you adjust for inflation, that same Chevelle would cost $25,600 in today’s dollars. A basic Chevy Trax starts at about $22k and has nearly double the net horsepower and is rated at 24/32 mpg. It also has a 5-star crash test rating, weighs 2-300 lbs less than the chevelle, comes with air conditioning, power windows, locks, keyless entry, a decent stereo, cruise control, ABS, stability control, a backup camera, and a 60k mile warranty. I’m not a Chevy guy and I have no doubt that it is a cheaply made vehicle, but to claim that it is 1/2 the car for 10x the price is just nostalgia talking. My current vehicle is a “cheap” Mazda and it just rolled over 272k miles. I have yet to have a repair over $200. I do all my work myself except oil changes, tires, and alignments. Could the chevelle match those claims? Could it have run for 272k miles with all repairs costing under $22 (inflation)? I’d imagine the I6 itself probably could have made 272k, but you’d have scrapped the car twice.

That's the problem with the diagnostic codes, some customers don't realise that the mechanical part of an actuator could be at fault but it's only pointing you in the general direction that then needs a good technician to diagnose the mechanical fault. Say the mechanical part of the solenoid could be damaged or sticking but the electronic part is ok, the e.c.u. Will only be able to test the circuit but that would show as OK so it will only be able to say there's a misfire in the cylinder using other sensors on the engine.

Interesting diagnosis this one. I wonder a couple of things - if there's much smoke coming out the back and if a compression/leak down test would reveal anything further on that cylinder (compression vs. oil control rings, valves etc).However, I guess the physical evidence is there in those 'scope photos. From my understanding, the ECM primarily cuts fuel to avoid damaging the catalytic converter from unburnt fuel... if that fuel isn't combusting, maybe it is indeed fuel on that cylinder and not oil. Or maybe both. Probably redundant, since it looks toast.

Leaking injector? Only way would be a bad o ring and that would put gas on the motor and would be obvious from the smell. He switched the injectors themselves and the issue stayed on cyl 4. Leaking injector is not the issue. Plugs are burning hot and firing as they should before the ecu safety cuts things. A conpression leakdown would be the ideal final test procedure to determine a loss on #4. That would still not indicate whether it would be the ring or valve issue but would determine the issue to be oil intrusion above the piston. But looking at the buildup only on #4 also tells us the same thing.
