Dealing with Tree Suckers

The flowering crabapple tree was growing a bunch of suckers. Mom bought Bonide Sucker Punch to see if it was more effective than just cutting the suckers back. Watch the video to see her test results after 3 weeks.
It wasn't a perfect solution, but the Bonide did work better than just cutting the suckers back.
We're curious what you do with suckers? Is there a product that works for you or how do you handle suckers?

Two years ago, I discovered the Sucker Punch and applied two separate times after trimming the suckers back on my ornamental tree. I was disappointed in the results and the suckers continue to pop up.

Mom said that the second treatment was even more effective. So maybe a few applications are the ticket!

I received my sucker punch yesterday and would have been treating at this time but a welcome storm with rain just rolled in so I will postpone till tomorrow. I viewed several videos prior to purchasing the sucker punch. Thought I would mention a couple of quick points. One posted a suggestion of using a 1” foam paint brush with the product to speed up the process. I also read a few that indicated it might take two to three follow up treatments. I am ok with that if it significantly reduces the work year to year. Sure appreciate your video. I believe it was one of the best for detail.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I do believe she had to put a second application on but did see an improvement. Great tip about the foam paint brush!

My iris beds are full of cottonwood starts what can I do?

I bet more suckers will pop up in others areas.. You can possibly use a wider chip brush just pour it in a wider container😊

Agree! Wider brush would work just as well. And if I remember correctly she applied it a couple times and saw a reduction in the number of suckers that came back. Not a 100% solution.

I have a bottle of this, and I'm reading the directions for use, and they're incredibly unclear, but after watching other videos, the sense I get is that you're not supposed to prune and apply just to the cut surface, but rather apply the product all over the surface of new sprouts less than 10 inches tall, and that for taller suckers, you should cut them off and wait for them to regrow to a height of less than 10 inches before applying the product. Again, though, I'm just guessing here; the directions are to me quite unclear.

i know that sucker punch is exp ... do u have any other solution.

The only other solution I've done is to cut the suckers when I see them or remember to do it. If it's a dead tree/stump I have read that you can apply vigegar, but it might take several applications, every few days to stunt sucker growth. Let us know if you find another solution that works for you!
