New nurse graduates will experience "new nurse anxiety" during some point while on the job. It is most common to experience anxiety as a new nurse during the first 6 months to year of being a nurse. The anxiety seems to start at the beginning of orientation (because you are new) then decrease during orientation and peaks when orientation is over (when you're on your own as a nurse).

In this video, I'm going to talk about what causes new nurse anxiety (feeling overwhelmed with the new environment/people, feeling not confident in performing skills, harming a patient unintentionally, dealing with chaos like balancing patient loads, completing paperwork, communicating with members of the healthcare team etc.) and how to deal with anxiety so you don't become burnt out and possibly leave the nursing profession.

One month on my own. I’m really emotional and feel so behind with work. I leave work feeling not capable and unfulfilled. I’m tired emotionally and physically and I just don’t know how to manage. I’m really trying to give it time but it really takes a toll on me. I just feel out of place. I hope it gets better soon... thanks 🙏🏼

I have really bad anxiety. I feel like crying. I can’t stop thinking about work on my days off. Recently, I couldn’t get an IV on a difficult PT, and I had to pass it on to the next nurse and I felt SO bad. I still feel bad about it. I can’t tell if it’s just my anxiety or if bedside nursing just isn’t for me.

I was a straight A student, and have been working as a nurse four 4 years. 2 weeks ago I started a new job at a very busy urgent care with higher acuity patients and have been experiencing anxiety for many of the reasons you described. I’m glad you made the video because it’s critical we not shame ourselves for feeling less then when we start a new job and/or admit that’s it’s OK and normal to be nervous even when you are an excellent and competent nurse. Thanks again!

it always gets better overtime mainly because experience is the best teacher. knowing the protocols and knowing how the staff are like individually,. also one tip is to be observant of your other co nurses. identify what are their strengths and copy it. and combine them all up plus add your own flavor to it.. most important thing of all is be brave. fake it til you make it. you will make mistakes but you will learn from it. its the courage to continue that counts.....

I just started working in the OR as a new grad nurse. It has been information overload, so many new things that were never even taught in nursing school. Everyone is so experienced and fast, im the youngest in the unit and the only new nurse so i cant relate to anyone! Is frustrating because they show you a million things and then expect you to remember everything. I try my best everyday, but is very mentally exhausting. I cant wait until i feel confident in what i do.. i hate feeling out of place and stressed everyday. I love the specialty and find it so interesting, thats the only thing that keeps me going.

U described everything I feel. Esp the fact that I feel like i am a burden to the other nurses, slowing them down. All these make me feel so anxious. Had my first melt down the other day. I just burst into tears. I am an overseas nurse in the UK and I have been out of practice for more than 4yrs. Prior to moving to the UK, I was a newly qualified. So I practised just for a year. So I feel like I am reliving this twice. I am so stress, my orientation period finishes in two days and I feel like I'm still not ready. Thanks for all your tips ,they are so what I needed to hear.

Hi hun I feel exactly the same way. I am in the UK also and I feel exactly how you r. Everyday I come home and cry. I cry but I told my manager how I'm feeling and that I would like a mentor that can be patient and guide me throughout. I was a nurse 6 yrs in my country and I was confident not saying I never felt uneasy at times but I was more confident back home. Confidence comes when you become competent in your work that's just what I think. I just pray one day it passes. My flat mates are all confident but I'm sure they are feeling like me but are scared

I’m a new nurse. Only have been working for over 2 months & I find that my anxiety only flares up before work & as soon as I leave work. I think about all the stupid things I said or did, what I could’ve done differently & how incompetent I feel. And I feel like it’s getting worse now that my orientation ends in 3 weeks & I still feel like idk wth I’m doing. At work I just do what I need to do, learn as much as I can, & really don’t think about my anxiety bc I have sooo many other things to get done & think about. But boy as soon as I clock out it hits me. Tears all the way home. It sucks sometimes.

I've been watching your videos all day! I've been a nurse for about 2.5 years, and I just started a job in CVPCU. Before that, I worked for a short time in a nursing facility and as a hospice nurse for over a year. SO...I'm now in the cardiac unit, and I am struggling quite a bit. I have only just learned those important skills like hanging fluids, IV meds, IV insertion and blood draws. We don't do that in hospice, and I never performed those skills in the SNF. I am definitely having the anxiety you've described in this video. How in the world can I pass meds, do blood draws for labs, contact doctors, document phone calls to doctors, do admissions, do discharges, tend to calls from patients, hang fluids quickly, continue to learn these skills that are quite scary because of the thought of making a mistake (bubbles in lines, bleeding when inserting IVs, missing an IV stick, causing pain or unintentionally harming a patient...), and all the other things - AT THE SAME TIME???? I have taken LOTS of notes today, and I've printed out your report templates. Thank you so much for your videos. I'll recommend them to my friends!!!

Hello Michelle :) I just wanted to personally reply to you and say thank you for the comment, and best wishes with your new job. I know it sounds crazy and so overwhelming, but I promise after you get through the orientation period part of your job you will feel like "I got this". However, those first couple of weeks will be overwhelming (very normal) and like information overload but hang in there and remember all of us go through it....some are just embarrassed to talk about it because they think it makes them look like a weak nurse lol. Again, thanks for the comment and for recommending my videos...I really appreciate it.

I recently moved from Puerto Rico to Florida, this is my first job as a nurse in a very high acuity-fast pased Med-Surg unit. My main struggle? the language, I do speak English, is not perfect though. I have a lot over me right now, I’m still adjusting to my new environment, the new language, being far from my family, everything is new to me, all that adds more stress and anxiety to my already complicated life and career. Right now I’m dreading going to work, I think at this point I need professional help. This video is so helpful, thank you Sarah.

Today my school had a BCLS & AED course that we had to pass and attain a certificate to conduct CPR & AED for infants & adults. I cried so much during the test. I wanted to quit everything. I kept shivering and I doubted my abilities. I was so close to giving up and walking away. I cried and am tearing again as I write this post. That brave person that I thought I once was, just want to hide in a corner and away from everyone. I'm embarrassed by the way I acted earlier on. I really couldn't stand up and be a nurse. I was so unbecoming of one... I think the fact that I was so disappointed with myself was that because this was just a basic course yet I couldn't even keep up and perform it well. The thought of future obstacles that will be 10 times more difficult lying ahead of me really punches me in the stomach and makes me sick. The fact that I was the weakest link in my group made me even more doubtful of my choice to study Nursing. I hope that I can recover from this setback soon and take it as a learning experience. But for now, I'm scared. Scared that I would lose my will power to get back up after every defeat.

Just passed boards for physical therapy assisting last week and start my new job tomorrow. This video definitely helped me calm my nerves. I find myself second guessing my knowledge at times and constantly have to remind myself that I am licensed so I must know something. I always feel like I must go in and show my peers that I am on their same level as far competence and ability to think quickly on my feet. I try to fake it till I make it but it eats me up knowing that there is so much I still have to learn, especially things that I did not get enough experience on during my clinicals. I plan to take it one day at a time, learn quickly from my peers, and try my best not to be overwhelmed.

Hey @RegisteredNurseRN! I always mention how much I love your videos, and I'm glad that you said you were/are a preceptor. I'm in a 2 year nurse residency program, and I'm on my second rotation. I desperately need your help (again), and I'm pretty sure other new nurses would appreciate your advice too. As a new nurse, I'm in a time management pickle. I have asked senior nurses, charge nurses, and my preceptors, "How do they juggle so many pts in a timely manner?" I know this is my weakness and that I need help with this issue, yet everyone I ask tells me, "You'll just be able to do it with experience." To me, I know there's some truth in that but it doesn't help me right now. I'm on the cardiac unit, and I swear my pts have meds almost every hour. If it's not one pt, it's another. I feel like I'm running in a hamster wheel. I love it don't get me wrong. However, yesterday I didn't eat, drink, or take any breaks. I sacrificed breaks to be on time for everyone except for 2 meds for two different pts that I over looked, which were pretty important (not life threatening but still important). This unit is pretty busy so it's rare to see a nurse just sitting around. I know to ask for help, but what happens when there is no one to go to? I feel absolutely horrible. On my first rotation, my preceptor followed behind my charting, and she would cue me if something wasn't done when it should be within the "window" to ensure I wasn't late. If I was held up, she would go ahead and do the task at hand and let me know. On this cardiac rotation, I'm 100% on my own and it's only day 2. I always let my preceptors know time is my weakness and that I need help with it. However, I'm starting to feel I'm on lone-wolf island on this cardiac unit. I need to figure something out because I won't always have a preceptor, but I don't know where I to start. Perhaps you could put together a time management video 0;)

Hello Trish :) I totally understand what you are saying, and I will make a video on time management tips for new nurses. Hang in there because I KNOW it is so overwhelming and the "hamster wheel" description is a perfect thing to call it. I promise it does get better as you hammer down your routine and gain experience. Right now it is trial and error for you, but it will finally click. I'm wrapping up some other video requests right now, but hopefully can have the video done within the next couple of weeks. So stay tuned!

Hello!! i am new here and i'm in love with your videos... I've been working as a nurse for 19 years in Brazil, and i'm a good one!!! But in april i'll try the nclex. By the way... i'm not worried about the exam but the life as a nurse in the USA. I'm scared about using the" right english" and the others professionals... about the prejudice with foreign nurses. As i said before, i'm a competent nurse and i love my job. Thanks for your words and passion . I wish i could work with someone like u. You've got a new fan.

Really wish I had seen this video when I was in a direct entry-NP program. It might very convinced me to try again rather quickly. I ended up taking myself out post my first semester, due to stress and the financial burden, but hopefully in the far future can try again once I've gotten rid of the rest of my student loans.

I needed this video. I just passed my nclex because of you like I said lol but I start on the floor sunday, just finished the classroom orientation. but boy I'm so nervous it's so much charting, so much paperwork, it's a lot of responsibility. I hope I'm able to juggle everything, and able to be attentive to my patients :-( mind you I've been a STNA for 6 years.

Thank you as always for watching my videos :) You will do awesome...what you wrote in your comment about being nervous about charting, patient responsibility, and juggling everything is EXACTLY what I had anxiety about. I promise it gets better overtime. You're STNA experience will REALLY help you transition faster compared to other new nurses who don't have that experience. I wish you the best, and thank you for your dedication to my channel.

Kimmie Cakes this sounds legit. as a volunteer, one of the errands I help with, i help them with the charts to put them back in place. I know just a volunteer, but I feel nurses should feel Thankful for volunteers. doctors should feel thankful for nurses. we are all a team. with out each other, we aren't a team. :( congrats on your new transition. may Jesus help you.. don't forget about God, you need HIm. His strength is your strength. be blessed. 🙏 🌹

Hi!! I worked as ER nurse for 7 years. But i shifted to CCU for about 5 months now. And now I'm struggling and having anxiety , especially every first day of my shift. Now, i have regrets in choosing critical care. It is really different from emergency nursing. I am planning to go back to ER because i don't feel competent working in CCU. I don't like working at bedside. This anxiety is killing me. I'm having hard time handling it. 😔

Can you do a video explaining muscle strength grading having a hard time with this. 5 is easy to assess in those with normal strength and 1 but have a hard time distinguishing the rest.

Your videos are helping me so much knowing that it's not only me feeling this anxiety. Sometimes I feel like I don't know what I'm doing like we do the morning meds round and then what next? I know you say that you complete MD orders but as a student nurse I never knew what was going on. Do you think that could be because they straight away relayed their orders to the nurses and I never knew what they wanted? I feel like when I start working there'll be so many things which I haven't completed because I wasn't aware of them.

I’m a new grad RN in a busy ER. I often go home and overthink my day and worry about if I caused harm to a patient and I don’t know how to not come home without over analyzing my shift and overthinking small details of the day... is that normal and will it get better?

I failed a placement because of high anxiety - had to repeat the semester, the facility changed the learning program so now it was over 1 year. I had no support, I tried to reach out to teachers at the placement facility and then at uni the manager said to the teachers to not engage with me. Now I am about to begin the final placement and I am getting anxiety again, more so because the uni has sent me to a facilty 4 hours drive away when I told them I can't do it.

Hi Sarah, I am a Senior nursing student. Anxiety has a been a major problem I have encountered through out the program. It try so hard to be calm during clincal but it seems like I let anxiety get the best of me. I really enjoyed this video and I was wondering is there a special place to put in a request for lecture topics or skills?

RegisteredNurseRN ok great. I will be starting my capstone on a ortho neuro trauma floor in about a week. There are tons of skills I haven't done or only done a few times such a starting a foley, suctioning/trach care, drawing From a port, giving meds through a peg tube/ learning the parts on the tube such as the pit stooper, wound care/dressing change, central line dressing change. On top of this there are some basic skills I would like to improve on such as carefully turning, transferring patients in and out of bed (specially hip and knee surgery patients and those with lots of tubes), drawing up medication From a vial.. I know this is alot and I would be grateful even if you just covered one or 2 topics. I really want to succeed in capstone and feel as though you are excellent at explaining and demonstrating things in a less complex manor.
