Atom is actually Astro Boy. His japanese name is Atom but they decided to call him Astro Boy for the american version.

When he's talking about "being sold" it's because Tenma realized Atom (Astro Boy) would never grow up like his son would have so he got rid of him in anger by selling him to a circus which is where Ochonimizu found him.
