I was talking about Death Stranding with a friend once and she said "It's sort of like a walking simulator but not." And I said "It's more like an obstacle simulator." And her and I both agreed that "Obstacle simulator" worked pretty well as a blanket statement for games like this.

Well said, and exactly how I feel. I can remember spending three full days, probably 25+ hours, grinding to build roads in my game. Coming online the second day and third days, having a bunch of extra donations and even having a section of road completed nearly made me cry. I always got warm fuzzy feelings when I logged on and saw "you got (x) likes from people using your roads". I didn't even know the roads could deteriorate for a hundred hours or so because the players I was connected with kept the donations up so well. Thank you to the donators for keeping us up and running 💙

Death Stranding and Pathologic 2 both coming out the year before the pandemic, name a more powerful couple. The Dexter quote hits fairly hard. I think it's less self-contradictory because in reality I think a lot of people struggle, but none of us can see it. Ironically you have to be close to someone to learn the ways that they struggle socially, so from the outside everyone seems so confident and put together, "making it look easy" when we're all a bunch of babies piloting meat-gundams we don't even know how to operate properly. Someone wanted my opinion on something because I apparently seemed like the "most normal" person around, which, what? With the exception of, like, four people, I go through every social interaction thinking "stop bothering them they don't actually like you stop bothering them they don't actually like you"
@LordRavenscraft
@LordRavenscraft 2 жыл бұрын
I think this is exactly why that quote hits so hard for me: It's not that it's objectively true, but it strikes at how it *feels*. "They make it look so easy" kind of already reveals that it's all perception. I've had people ask for social advice, or say things like "How do you make friends so easily?" and like...lol?? I have no idea. I've literally written guides to this stuff and I'm still just winging it. On the one hand, I think it's useful to say everyone out there is struggling just as much as we are, but it ALSO means you're way better at it than you think! It's imposter syndrome for relationships. It also helped me to realize that the whole "you're bothering them" thing isn't just self-defeating, but can actually be harmful to others. I had a few friends that, I found out later, thought I didn't like them because I never reached out to them. Sometimes, being kind to your friends means pushing past that fear, and letting them tell YOU if they need space, rather than saying no for them and taking away their agency.

@@LordRavenscraft This is exactly what I was thinking, I got high marks at work for my Communications and Interaction. I was baffled and said so to my boss. Turns out being uncomfortable and confused about how to talk to folks, always consciously trying to avoid screwing up makes me naturally conscientious. Ive lost contact with friends because Im scared to impose by reaching out, and when I bump into them its always obvious Ive been missed. This is the second reminder in a week Ive had to reach out to my old friends, maybe Ill take the hint

A great vid about a wonderful game. I spent so many hours being the crazy person running back and forth, scavenging supplies to build every last segment of road I could. It was early enough that I was the first person to get to it on my instance and it was always really neat logging back in each day and seeing all the likes my roads got. Funnily enough, I also built a complex network of zip lines often in useful and hard to reach places but those only rarely got likes.

My favorite review of this game is Dunkey’s……. Second video. His reasons for coming around on the game was surprisingly interesting. He shares a lot of opinions with you and accepts the flaws in the game (mostly) rather than being frustrated by them.
@KabbalahSherry
@KabbalahSherry Жыл бұрын
And a lot of the "flaws" in the game... really aren't flaws at all. The gameplay - hell, even just *walking* - are supposed to be difficult & engaging. In fact, it's almost ruined other games for me, because their "walking" feels false compared to the very realistic traversal that's in Death Stranding. The map is absolutely gorgeous & you basically can explore it anywhere. It's incredible. Yes some of it is harsh & difficult to trek through... but again, that's not a flaw. It's up to you to find better routes to take so that you aren't making things more difficult on yourself. 9/10 when people b*tch about certain locations, it's because they didn't realize they took a sh*tty route to get somewhere. A route they didn't need to take at all. 😄 smh

I love this. I loved Death Stranding from the jump and I have never really been able to pinpoint why. Though I've played video games my entire life, I do not have my finger on the pulse of video game culture - I don't really know anything about Kojima and I hadn't even heard of the game until my partner was like "hey, watch this trailer for this weird game you might like - it's coming out soon". I was really drawn in by the trailer so I got it at launch. And I love so much about it. It's like...something about the game just gives me this sense of comfort that I can't quite explain. I think the points you raise here are definitely part of it.

I played this game on PC during the first lockdowns, when the world went silent and we were all scared and everything was uncertain. What Kojima could not manage with his on the nose dialogue and drilling its themes "We have to stay connected Sam" he sure as hell did via gameplay. When I started connecting the chiral network I started playing the game to help others. Yes, I was one of these obsessive players building and maintaining roads. My pleasure :)

Thank you for being one of the few youtubers who, even now months after you posted this video, openly acknowledge that the pandemic is still going. I'm disabled and chronically ill, and I've been isolating now for three years. I haven't seen my family or friends, and I've never met my baby niece. I try to get a little escapism in my day watching youtube, but it's hard because every second video there's some offhand remark about "going on holiday!" or "not feeling well at the moment", usually in that order. Or people speaking about the pandemic in the past tense. I guess it's because my escapism is different from everyone else's. I don't want to escape the reality of the pandemic, I want to escape the reality of a world full of people in denial about it. That's the thing that hurts, and that's what media that's supposed to distract me is full of. Thank you for being honest and letting me just watch a video about a game, without feeling like I'm getting gaslit about the state of the world.

When I first met with the Elder I choose to wait the rest, until I unlock the zipline. Then went back, built up a Zipline network to the Elder from the Engineer, and did every mission easly. Later extended the same zip-line to the other side of the hill to the Distribution center, then to the Weather station, and to the Timefall Farm. At the end I had a zip-line network where you can go from the Engineer to the Farm without stop.

Death stranding sounds like it got its inspiration of painful navigation from pathologic. Getting from point A to point B is a struggle and you have to choose wisely are you going to take the dangerous quick path or the easy long path that might take too much of your time and you'll be late failing the mission. Ps: also in pathologic, The game basically says if you want to help these people you're going to have to work to the bone for it even though they hate you and actively are making your job harder. Connecting is hard and if you want to connect someone that doesn't want to connect you're going to have to push yourself to do things that you are uncomfortable with to do so.

I bought Death Stranding pretty soon after it came out on PC, but never really got around to actually digging into it. While it was always in the back of my mind to give it another go, this video definitely convinced me to think more seriously about it. You sold the themes of the game so well I'm honestly super curious how exactly the game is going to implement these. And if nothing else, just to help those other poor disconnected PC players with some autopaver materials :)
@Jozeevis
@Jozeevis 2 жыл бұрын
Now, some 20 hours in to the game, I rewatched this video, and damn. You already sold the experience so well, but having felt parts of it myself, it hits all the harder. Seeing the theme of connection explored in the NPCs is very neat as you mention, but connecting with other players truely takes the game a step further. That clip at 6:55 of you falling and the situation getting worse and worse until you get back control, I felt that.. But getting the message that another player used a road I built, or liked a structure I put down is honestly a great feeling! Makes going through the trouble of getting the materials to those difficult places totally worth it. And as you mention, even if likes have no inherent gameplay effect, it just feels nice to like and be liked! The game has only just now started telling me about road decay, and with this rewatch reminding me as well, I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for that! Thanks for convincing me to give this game a try through this awesome video. I definitely have tons more of it to experience, but it's already been hella worth it. Cheers!

I think what you're saying here at 6:21 to 6:33 (about the deceptive difficulty and the amount of time you spend learning the core of the game) is the sort of thing that's shifted how I talk about the game, especially since I work retail. The opening area is gonna be the fall off point for most people, and it means that Death Stranding is unconditionally not for everybody, but it has to be tried to see if it is for you. In fact, I got curious and went off to do some math. Based on the Steam achievement data for the original version of the game, if you made it past chapter 1, you're only 57.3% likely to make it to chapter 2 (the point at which you unlock the main region). Of those who make it past chapter 2 - those of who stand at the point where the game's scale is truly revealed - only 68.6% of those people will make it to the end of chapter 3. For comparison, the first major wall in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Gyoubu Oniwa (the guy guarding the castle gates on the horse) will see only 68.3% of players get past him, relative to the people who had their first resurrection. Anyway, just found your work today via the Knives Out video and decided to check into your channel and am glad I did! This video is great so far and covers a lot of the stuff I absolutely love about this game.

If, hypohetically, I'm the only player, will it be worthwhile to upkeep the roads by myself? Or can only a community benefit from that sort of bulk-efficiency-through-cooperation. @LordRavenscraft
@LordRavenscraft 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and I should say, I specifically chose Dunkey to pick on because a.) He's fucking great, even when I disagree I'm laughing my ass off, and 2.) I think he's got the best version of the argument against this game. I like both videos and I think the second one I even agree with just about everything he says. I skip a lot of cutscenes, there are whole plots that make no sense (even for Kojima) or are irrelevant, and my god I'd love it if they stopped interrupting the game to explain every little thing. I'll even grant that the physics and collision mechanics are busted as hell half the time. The only part I think Dunkey missed (respectfully) is that, unlike say Breath of the Wild, you're not meant to feel like you're in a fun physics sandbox where you can do ridiculous things to solve problems. Link can put a couple balloons on a raft and fly over a mountain, because that's how the game wants you to explore and have fun. But when you can't just lay down a bunch of ladders to drive a truck over a canyon, it's because...well, it's a truck lol. The game wants you to feel limited and constrained, specifically so that you'll rely on other players, and invest in more long term infrastructure. Especially infrastructure that's going to help other people. Sure, your wacky idea for a bridge made of ladders helps you right now in this specific spot, but a well-placed zipline network would help everyone. That said, I don't think everyone has the patience or interest in a game like that. Deliberately annoying yourself to learn a lesson about how *checks notes* roads are good...I can get it if it's not as meaningful to other people, or at the very least if they'd rather not sit through hours of cutscenes and weird boss fights, and assorted nonsense to get there. All in all, I'm actually a fan of a lot of Dunkey's work so I hope folks know I'm teasing those clips with nothing but respect. 💙

Is another reviewer pointed out to me "death stranding is a walking simulator in the same fashion that Cod is MOBA, it's not a failure of the game it's a failure of the category itself"

Death Stranding is a clumsy, clunky, tedious mess with a poorly paced and hard to understand story, and it's one of the best games I've ever played. I wish I could explain more, but I honestly can't. Play the game.

Who cares that this video is "3 years late"? There's no time limit for discussing art. Besides, didn't you talk about Pirates of the Caribbean like almost 20 years after it came out?
