Books are difficult to declutter…add our faith into the mix and well it can be overwhelming. I am frequently asked about decluttering Bibles and although I STRONGLY believe that everyone should have at least one bible….we can find ourselves with more than we actually need. So how do we handle this area of our home?

I loved this video. Some folks are slow readers so I think the year long TBR makes sense. I read around 4 books per month, but the library is my friend so the book clutter isn't a thing.

So many great points! I grew up in a hoarder house full of books. Probably a hundred thousand of them!! We did a book fair in the garage and people from the neighborhood came and took half. Bibles were donated to a local church and the rest of the books were packed into boxes and picked up by Salvation Army and the V.A. ❤️

@@TheAtWhatCostBlog I just came across your great channel and am inspired! As a young guy with a heart issue that's getting the better of me faster than I realized, I have accepted it and am at peace with it. I am actually excited about heaven, but also am torn between that and checking off my bucket list. Do you have any advice for the best way can balance spiritual beliefs while preparing to wrap up my life on earth?

That's a pretty hefty question, one that I could never answer well here. I will say that if I were in that position, I think I would do anything I could to experience as much awe and wonder at the Lords creation and His love for me. Spending time with the ones you love, reading and enjoying the Bible, and praying and sharing the peace you have with as many as you can! There are many who do not have the peace of Jesus, what a testimony you can give. I think that peace allows us to live out our lives, no matter how long (none of us really know anyway, right?) enjoying God's creation and our opportunities to enjoy Him here and resting in knowing what is to come, whether we check off anything on the list or not. ;) Nothing will compare to what is to come. I'm so inspired by what you've shared.

@@TheAtWhatCostBlog Thank you very much, and I really love your advice! From the last heart scan, lying there as they passed the device over my chest, I knew it would either be good, or it would be news my time on this earth was up soon. I found out that my heart was enlarged so much it was only a matter of time, and I felt relief! I took in a deep breath, and let it out, and felt utter relief at the diagnosis! That may sound strange, but at that point I gave myself fully to being the best Christian I could. This was my life's purpose! I began reading the Bible, I began ministering at church, sharing my story and I even brought two people into a relationship! It caused some of the young men to realize to enjoy life and be assertive, as they realized through my story they could be in my shoes, then what have they gained not seeking ultimately marriage! My biggest thoughts are that I won't get to experience the joy of marriage, I'm eternally single. I used to never pray but I pray constantly, not for myself, but for others and at my being thankful for the Lord's wonderful creations. I am at total peace and bliss, and my mind has fully devoted itself to sharing my message while I can. I think I was meant to find your channel, as it has further inspired me! Thank you for your kind response, and please keep doing what you're doing!

Yay!!! I saw an R.C. Book and a Reformation Study Bible!!! 🙌🏻🙏🏻 That made my heart so happy! I think one of the items that bothers me the most is letting go of books that I’ve used for reference. I was a young married during a time when the Internet was not used (early 90’s). You learned how to do things by reading. Several years ago my daughter asked “how do you know how to do all this stuff, mom?” My reply was simple… READING…If I wanted to learn how to do something I found a (or a few 😉) book (s) . Once I found a book that was helpful I held on to it! Now, It’s really hard to let go of those books even though I know the information is easy to access on the Internet. I do feel an emotional attachment to those books, just like you said they are sentimental. “That book is how I learned how to….” Thank you so much for your content! ❤️🥰

I did a search on-line for organizations that specifically take Bibles and faith-based books. I found one in Alabama. It's a bit pricey to ship, even book rate, if you have a lot, but it's worth it knowing that they are going to good, Godly, use.

Girl, have done this over the last few years. I used to have soooooo many 'spiritual' books ~ both fiction/non ~ and down to one small bookshelf now. Wow! Excellent and much needed content, imo. 👏

I decluttered my collection of grandkids' books and toys because they weren't using them. I also donated about 50 of my books (some read/some not) and I feel a sense of relief and peace that they're no calling for my attention. Thank you for your calm, gentle, faithful approach to letting go of unneeded things. I bought the same NIV Study Bible at a garage sale for 10¢!!! I love it! Hugs...

What a great topic! We've moved several times in the last decade. Each time, I declutter more books. I asked myself if this book was available at the library or available as an ebook. If the answer was yes, I got rid of the book. I have kept some books that meant a lot to me at certain periods of my life. I have 2 shelves of books signed by the authors (some famous), many personalized to me. I'll never get rid of those. Regarding Bibles, I keep passing them along: Bible collections for foreign countries, a friend who had her Bible stolen at church, a food and clothing pantry that hands out Bibles to clients who have none, and family Bibles to my brother. I've only had to rebuy one devotional Bible. I still have a shelf of Bibles and commentaries. But it's a lot less than I used to have.

MaryBeth I'm so grateful you covered this topic! I have inherited *several* Bibles that have notes, highlights, worn or missing pages, were from family of long ago and thought it was discouraged to donated them if they were marked. That inventory doesn't include the Bible study books either. I feel like I would be missing out if I got rid of them without going through them first, especially the ones with notes. But really, I haven't made time for going through them and maybe I'll have time in the future. Such a hard sentimental decision to make. Thanks for your perspective and encouragement. Blessings.

I have been in the same boat. I have had several ladies in our church Bible Study that have had whatever Bible Study book from someone else with notes and they were downright giddy! It was encouraging to me to pass some along. What's wisdom if we don't share it? :)

MaryBeth, I am one who buys many Bible study books throughout the year. The only thing I don't like about doing that is the cost. If I can find a used book, I am happy to learn from it AND save money. So I totally agree that people are happy to find a used faith based book! I so enjoy being in this collaboration with you!

Another advantage of used books is there is a reduced sunk cost. If you pick it up and it turns out not to be your thing, no biggie if you only drop $2-3 on it. Of course, you do have to be disciplined not to pick up a dozen books you might read because they are only $2-3......

Bibles are my weakness...I have way too many and have already managed to donate a lot, but there are still too many and I actually have two more on the way! I actually would love to be able to have just one Bible, and I know that could work, because if I want to compare translations, I only have to Google them, I don't really need all the hard copies cluttering up my shelves. The problem with parting with some of them is, I spent a lot of money on them, or I have written sentimental dedications in them or they are just so beautiful! My goal for just one Bible (or even two, at the most) is painstakingly hard to achieve, but I am gradually chipping away at my 'collection' and I think much of what you said in this video is going to be very helpful. So, thank you, and God bless!

I can so relate to this! I don’t know that I could ever go to one Bible. I wish I would have mentioned a story from a friend I thought of while reading your comment. He showed up as a young adult to a Bible study and had never owned a Bible. He had only been a believer a handful of days. The guy next to him gave him his personal Bible…notes, highlights, etc. and said “here you can have mine, keep it.” That was such a vivid part of his testimony from those early days in his faith. He still carries it now years later and they have developed such a strong friendship. I’d at least like to get to that place. ☺️ Thanks so much for watching!
