Actually I think that prune juice would be like Picard's Earl Grey he doesn't drink it as much as you think. In fact with the looser atmosphere and other Klingons around he mainly drank Blood Wine on DS9.

I don't think he drinks it to an obsessive amount. If you're a working man, your favourite drink a couple of times a day makes complete sense to alleviate stress (or which he has a LOT of) or just for refreshment.

The problem with the prune juice is that it was a great joke in Yesterday's Enterprise, but then it got beaten into the ground by being mentioned in DS9 again and again.

Haha, I never realized those were Raktajino cups. You can still find them in gas stations, I might have to pick one up as a star trek mug and refer to it as Raktajino until I lose all my friends. :P

@Draknfyre 6 жыл бұрын
The mugs you see on the show were ceramic and from a drinkware company located in California. Up until several years ago they still offered one of the colors you see on the show (as it was one of their regular designs) but the other, I believe the blue one, was custom-made for the show by them. One of the people who worked with the props said they had to regularly order new batches, because the mugs often "walked" off the set. (i.e. actors and crew kept taking them.)

I have enough problems with Klingons in the bathroom. :P Sorry, that was a stupid old joke that popped in my head.I hope I'm not the only one who's heard it and gets it. It was specifically meant to be a portmanteau of cappuccino and some made-up Klingon word - the idea was, it was originally imported into Klingon, and then back to Earth much later, hence the slightly less obvious spelling.

One analogy I can think of is wine. The term wine is use to refer alcoholic drink made from fermented grape juice. The term wine is also generally used to describe other forms of alcoholic drinks made from others besides fermented grape juice. Alcoholic drinks from fermented rice is generally call rice wine or from fermented palm sap as palm wine. Raktajino or Klingon coffee is most likely made from an indigenous Klingon plant that are prepared similar to Earth coffee.

You know... oddly other than couple of times you never hear a Klingon order a raktajino... but we know it's Klingon coffee (besides when they say it is) because Rakt is a type of Klingon food... and all of a sudden I'm filled with this realisation that the Federation invented the stuff because upon signing peace with the klingons they came to the scientific conclusion that one of the warrior races absolute delicacies that must absolutely be served live also had one of the highest caffeine contents of any foodstuff in the known galaxy and thus the Klingon economy was saved via the need for humans to wake up in the mornings.

My problem with Raktajino is the idea that A) A planet hundreds of light years away has coffee on it (this sort of humocentrism and laziness has always been one of Trek's biggest problems) and B) That it looks exactly like a mug of human coffee when all the rest of Klingon food and drink is wild, lumpy, coarse, noxious, strong or wriggly. It doesn't fit with anything else that we see them consume and it shouldn't be treated as something a human relaxes with over lunch. Actual Klingon coffee should look more like the run off from Rokej blood pie and carry the punch of Bloodwine.

mooseplainer There's also the chance that it is strong as all hell, but that's where popular tastes have gone around that time. Plus, it's probably not coffee in that it's made from the roasted seeds of a coffee plant. It's almost certainly something pretty close that ended up being called coffee for expediency.

Well, they probably just call it coffee in the same way we call many beverages "tea", even when they don't actually contain any tea. It's the standard name given to some kind of roasted plant matter steeped in hot water. Besides, almost all of the humanoid aliens in Star Trek are really just stand-ins for different facets of humanity, anyway. So why wouldn't they have a version of coffee? On a side note, I bet Klingons would love Casu Marzu.
