Had the *first* defendant (Aaron Brown) just asked Judge Simpson, "Could I please report subsequent to Friday, sir? My daughter's prom is upcoming.", he might have gotten his wish. *Telling* the court, "I ain't gonna be here Friday" isn't simply asking for trouble; it's *begging* for it!

@aeromedical6776

My impression of him is that he doesn’t just want to send people to jail and/or slap them with a bunch of felony convictions. If there is a viable alternative to jail, he’d rather go that route. However, when people are given chance after chance after chance to correct their behavior and they simply won’t comply, he won’t hesitate to sentence them to jail.

The ability of this judge to switch in and out, slam the hammer down and be cordial the next second is just amazing. He really treats every single person as ... you know ... a separate person, completely disconnected from the previous case. Utmost respect for this man.

I loved his interaction with the recovering alcoholic. It is so cool to see his compassion and understanding. I picked up 6 felonies when I was 19 due to my addiction, and thanks to the Justice system, I was forced to get sober and face my demons. The judge and my probation officer saved my life. Now, I get to work as a mental health technician with people who are right where I was as a teenager.

This has been a continuing problem since the necessity of Zoom court. Back when defendants were appearing in person, the judge could simply have them remanded then and there. Now, because they're not physically present, some defendants feel they can just "call the shots" with impunity (which still takes a heck of a lot of nerve, if you ask me).

If that first defendant stated it like this "sir I understand I messed up and I am not going to run away from the consequences. I would ask if the court would please allow me to turn myself in after my daughter's prom, it's a big event in her life and she shouldn't suffer for my mistake." And the judge would most likely granted that
