Hi all, the anti-EV brigade has been out in force recently, spreading a load more one-sided EV hate nonsense about cars they seemingly have a ton of interest in. As many of you will know, I'm far from an EV fanatic but neither am I fanatical about anyone's choice of car. I just wanted to make this video to address some of the most common comments that crop up in my videos and they I often see as the source for a lot of silly online noise around EVs - it's often based in truth but stuck under a magnifying glass and made way bigger and louder than reality is - all in the name of clicks.
For all those saying that electric cars are not the future, I neither agree nor disagree, I just want to know how they know - and if they do, could they also tell me the winning lottery numbers for this weekend?
I could jump on that bandwagon but I'm choosing to keep producing balanced and unbiased content. I guess I'll stay poor.

What a refreshing take on all of the hyped up crap that is out there about EV's. I am an EV driver, but I am far from a card carrying evangelist as one "critic" likes to call folk, and I leased my car because it suits my situation and my usage. I would have just as easily leased a petrol or diesel had it been necessary, but all of this tinfoil hat crap on the net really boils my piss. It's a bit like critising someone for owning a one bed flat instead of a 12 bed mansion. Its horses for courses! Thanks again for your oasis of You Tube sanity on this!

@bigiainw you’re spot on with your comments. Have you seen the guy posting in Australia it’s the same rubbish as we see here but it’s all been said here months ago. Looks like he’s on catch up. The Luton car park fire is still a big talking point in Oz. When you ask people for facts they very rarely reply . Bless.

Finally. Someone talking sense, I've been banging on to people not to believe what they read about EV's. Like you say, telling people EV's are fine and won't cause you any more issues than a non EV doesn't get clicks. It's frustrating as people who don't know any better believe the rubbish they're being told and spread it as if it's fact. Hats off to you for simply telling the truth.

I absolutely ADORE this kind of videos you do Jim. I can tell you are well pi__ed off by some comments but I really appreciate your honesty and integrity. The difference here is that you do videos for HELPING PEOPLE (lease, insurance, reviews, etc…) instead of MAKING A FULL INCOME out of it. Well done to you and please, keep up the good work 👍🏻

Well said Jim - you are balanced and honest and don’t bang any particular drum. As with everything EVs suit some people and cases: if you can’t charge at home and do long distances regularly then I’d personally avoid them. I’ve been in EVs for 4 years now they fit with my circumstances and save me a fortune in fuel. Keep up the good work Jim

Great to see a measured response rather than the Macmaster doom and gloom. Some problems yes but loads of positives. don't like EVs then buy something else until you are ready, or not.

Another great video. I don't care if people buy petrol , diesel or hybrid cars etc. EVs work for me and enjoy them.I don't understand why there are so many angry people or hate groups about EVs seems crazy to me.

Love your independent view, cars catch fire , generally, from non-fuel related issues, heaters, dpf's, electrics (12V) , for EV's that's several times lower than either fossil or hybrids. Insurance increases are across the board, trying to recoup their losses from last year! Battery degradation is real but way less than people think, Jonathan Porterfield picked up a Renault Zoe with 110k miles on and it had a battery health of 89%. This is also warranted on all EV's for 7/8 years and 100,000 miles! I drove from Tamworth to the Outer Hebrides in 2018 in a 30kWh Leaf, stopped in Bradford overnight to pick up family, charged a few times when eating or having comfort breaks (plus one charging stop) to Fort William , overnight to catch the ferry next day, and twice to the ferry when having a comfort/food break. Now it would be far easier... I bought both my EV's for cash, IF I had sold my first one at time of getting my second it would have been a good deal (Covid crash) but I got my current EV with £3500 grant and £3500 discount from manufacturer, so still ahead! Thank you for a calm , measured commentary. Check the 1910 brochures, 90% battery powered , It's only Ford model T that changed it! Totally agree with your open philosophy, do you, buy for you, I just will never buy a fossil car again, because EV's are just better cars, and I have a 30+ years history of company cars of a decent level, Ford, Vauxhall, Merc, Rover ,etc.

I think I discovered your channel through the video you mentioned in the opening! I enjoy an open balanced perspective (which incidentally a lot of green car channels like Fully Charged don't provide) and you deliver exactly the right kind of content in my opinion. I also enjoy the number of people in your comment sections who clearly got their EV knowledge from Clarkson 20 years ago when a Leaf was the most advanced EV on the street.

Just taken delivery of a Mercedes EQC (thanks for the heads up on the lease deal of the century Jim!). £379 per month, shopped around on a well known comparison site and got insured fully comp for £45 per month. Job done. Not sure where these people are being quoted £4000 a year to insure an Audi A3? !

Fair comment. The anti EV rhetoric has gained traction because people dislike being told by governments what to do and there is a perception - true or not - of self righteousness about EV ownership. If it wasn't for current and impending legislation would EVs have evolved during the present timeframe - if at all? The market seems to be witnessing a backlash. Perhaps consumers are sceptical they will save the Planet.

I’ve got one to save on tax, fuel and servicing costs. No self righteousness, much like many. My second car is as likely to have a V8 as anything else. Why do I have to read nonesense or listen to morons telling me the car is about to catch fire, is impossible to charge, or that I can’t insure (my fully insured) car? Most of them have no first hand experience either. The government is banning the sale of new ICE cars in 12 years. You’ll still be able to drive your existing one. I think the world needs to get a grip.

Thank you...I'm a car nut, I've bought a new car every couple of year since the 70's...My MG4 Essence in Australia (which I think is the Trophy in the UK) comes with a 7 year unlimited km warranty on the car & battery & 7 years roadside assistance. Vehicle service is every 40,000 km. My insurance is cheaper than my ICE car was ($606.00) plus my ICE car was costing me $250+ a month in fuel my EV costs me $20. (I charge at home) Great car and can be a lot of fun to drive.

I am an EV fan myself but I am also a realist and I am all for pro choice. You drive whatever car you want to drive. But as the years go on I just see EV demand increasing and ICE demand dropping. Thanks, well said, there is so much nonsense posted about EVs that it needs a response. You got the "i am waiting for hydrogen" ,other classics like I want to drive non stop lands end to john o groats towing my caravan in mid winter with all the lights and heater on, you can,t do that in an EV. Other classics, batteries only last 2 years, they cannot be recycled etc and my favourite Cobalt, which is in the mobile phone or laptop you use and the oil refining industry uses huge amounts of Cobalt to make petrol, but it is appalling in an EV.

My EV insurance went up by £45 this year after changing from petrol to EV. Ioniq fully comp £328 pa for 70yr old with full no claims.

An excellent honest video. I am now on my third E.V. because they are fun to drive and I only do a small annual mileage and I charge my car using a 13amp plug when the sun is on my solar panels. The money I receive for my solar panels covers all my electricity bills and a big part of the gas used. I must admit if I wanted to go on a long journey I would use a petrol car although the electric car I have will cover more than 200 miles without charging.

Thank you for your integrity, in a time of major change, we will see an increasing mix of all types of transport, it's a global transition. My forever car is an MX5 but I also have a used Cupra Born, both cars are brilliant, there are pro's and con's of petrol or EV cars. Ironically in the scroll bar as I watch you video is a Multicoloured BOLD typeface video suggestion, with an ANGRY MAN and some click triggering punchy 'PROOF nEVer be the future' title, this will no doubt make the poster thousands, and the mainstream media/oil lobby will even reference him for his contribution to the continuation of business as usual.

It's ironic that MacMaster likes his EV, yet he has published hundreds of videos this year on why EV's are 'rubbish' and 'not the future'. The only clear reason is that he needs the income from the anti-EV videos to make the monthly payments on his Porsche EV. What a situation to get yourself in 🤣

Another great video Jim. Just honest and truthful as ever. I settled on a 2019 Honda Civic 1.5 Sport Plus in the end and went to Car2Go for the GAP insurance but done it online and didn't see anywhere to use your code but it was only £169 for 3 years

Spot on with the battery test on used EV's Jim. It is readily possible to get a print-out of the state of the battery in percentage terms. Then you don't have to buy if you're not ok with it....

Great video Jim, I have recently bought an E208 and I am just starting to experiance the effects of the cold weather, first thing I did was install a home charger and I only drive locally, and so far I have only had to charge once a week. One comment some said to me was the about teh number of charge cycles per battery. It was a 1000 cycles, but what he forgot was, that the battery is not dead then, it is that he may or will have droped below 80%. I then pointed out that I only charge once a week, so that is 52 times a year, so that lets push that up to 60, with a few road trips. And that still mean the battery is good for 9 to 10 years. some people just don't think. Keep teh videos coming.

Yep it’s sad 🤷🏼‍♂️ Every EV journey the MacMaster has turns into some kind of Hollywood style anti-EV adventure - most of his trips he’s got ‘ultra PTSD’ or some other ‘unbelievable’ event takes place 🤣 Clearly if the impact on his life was that bad he’d sell the EV, but obviously he can’t do that as he’d lose the ability to make click-bait videos and turn each video into a big payday.

Well said, I'm 10yrs in fully electric vehicles and on my fourth, never had any issues, had two Zoe's and two leaf 40s I've never heard of either having had a fire, just renewed insurance at £450, it's so infuriating listening to online comments by sheep who are lead by idiots one in particular JBC, it's the way manufacturers are going and wether you like it or not everyone will be driving electric someday.

EV owner here. We bought our first EV used and it hasn't caught fire. We can charge it at home. We've been on holiday in it to France and in the UK. It's lovely. I can't believe I’ll ever own another ICE vehicle. We need to replace our other car, and the replacement too will be a used EV. Is charging a problem? Not really, I’ve encountered broken chargers both here and in France. BTW, France has a lot of chargers. Driving an EV is just nicer than ICE, and it’s just a bit different from an ICE vehicle. When I’ve met other EV drivers, they’ve all been nice and helpful. Do I know everything about EVs? No. Is ours perfect? No. The worst part about owning an EV is dealing with idiots who believe they’re experts, just like some people on the internet. When some drivers hear you’ve got an EV some seem to have swallowed the anti-EV BS and some of those can get really angry. They are invariably wrong.

I did a check on car insurance groups and a comparable EV is in a much higher group, the vauxhall corsa petrol is group, but the corsa e is group 23, so there is a difference, also my EV's range drops substantially now the cold weather is here, I love the car but the main drawback is, it does not have a rear wiper, and for me being 75, it's TOO complicated. Love your vids, keep up the good work

It’s also quicker and more expensive though you see. A 1.0 fiesta with a 0/60 of 13 seconds is a much lower group than a Fiesta ST; it’s no different really. I also hate cars not having rear wipers by the way! Thanks for watching Michael 👍

It's a hugely emotive subject, people feel their right to travel around in their knackered old cars is being taken away. Be worth doing a video showing how cheap it is to charge at home on an EV tariff. Keep up the good work 👍

A Hydrogen car is an EV that requires 3 times the electricity of a Battery Electric Vehicle to go the same distance.

Some interesting points - I think I can say most of these points did not concern me. The depreciation, longevity and public chargers were my concerns. You mentioned your trip was in a long range Tesla - the road trip would be harder in shorter range non-Tesla, since Tesla have their own charging network. Love the idea of the battery health check, and replacing a battery with a reconditioned one if need be. Kind of saw the depreciation of electric cars coming - this technology is moving on very quickly. Electric cars are soon out of date, whereas petrol cars today are not much different from those 5 years ago. Would be keen to know what will happen with tax on diesels. Obviously all speculation for now. Hopefully it will act more of a deterrent from buying new ones, as opposed to a punishment to those who already have them.

I said from the start, lease new or buy used. The techonology is moving so fast and the false demand coming from company car drivers made it seem inevitable that used prices will do what they have. Just makes for used bargains.

Hi Jim, When I leased my Ioniq 4 years ago, the only used EVs were the Leaf and Zoe. My lease is up next July and the used car choice is amazing. But I do like new shiny things, If there's a deal like the Mercedes ev in your last video, I'll be all over it like a rash. I put my requirement in on the Leaseloco site, last August it was £2100 a month, my quote was £510. ✌❤

Totally agree with you, the type of car you drive should be a choice. I wouldn't buy an EV because I live in a flat like thousands of others and cant charge at home. The problem is when the government wants to force us into electric cars, the general public dont like to be told what to do. If you want one get one, if you dont, then dont.

Whilst I agree with many of your points, I think you understated the increased insurance particularly on Teslas which can be very expensive to repair after a crash and are often written off due to these high costs, so the insurance can be very high. Perhaps other makes of TVs that use more traditional assembly methods are not so bad? Then again there are non EVs (Jaguar Land Rover) which also can have sky high insurance costs due to theft.

Yes, it’s just be blown out of proportion on a grand scale. The anti-EV movement, just like the anti-ICE movement, do a great job of making mountains for molehills and not always letting reality stop a great story.

Like you say, I think that’s definitely more down to manufacturer and happens across the board regardless of powertrain. I went from a 4.4l V8 330bhp BMW 545i to Jag XF 3.0d (not even the S model) and the insurance went up from 960 to 1500 and only Tesco were in that ball park, the rest were north of 2000.

Hi Jim, reference your quote of 239 out of 100,000 fires are of EV’s. Do you know what percentage of all EV’s currently in use in the UK 239 is? How would that compare to percentage of fires in ICE vehicles? I’m not an EV critic but just wonder if the comparison is fair?

It’s about the story Brian. It’s about newspapers trying to stay relevant and scratching around for anything they can make “bigger”, simple to get clicks on their awful websites before they finally go the way of the dodo. According to the comments there are a ton of folks doing it on KZfaq too. I think there are far more pressing issues in the world that what someone chooses to drive that they’re probably better focusing some attention on. Isn’t it all a bit boring too??

No noticeable difference with mine mate, but then it has a heat pump. When I had the MG4 in winter it was awful whereas my mate found the range to be fine with his during summer. I think it all depends on the car, the battery chemistry, and if the car has a heat pump or not. I haven't asked anyone else about their battery incase they think I'm even more of a bore 😂

Hi Jim I read that included in EV fires were e scooters and e bike fires do you know if that is the case. I did a lease last year for the first time for an EV as depreciation was my concern and it looks like I could be right. As you know the monthly payments have come down but being of a certain age I didn’t want to wait a few years for things to settle. Before I even got the car I installed an EV charger because there are no public chargers within walking distance of my house. My initial insurance premium was £750 for a Subaru Solterra limited and the renewal was £130 less with the same company. I love the car and it suits my needs but it certainly wouldn’t suit everyone. I can’t see me going back to petrol after installing a charger etc but never say never.

I watch a couple of pro and a couple of anti EV channels, what amazes me are the number of incorrect statements or just outright lies. I drive a diesel - great for long distances, crap around town, a small petrol, great around town, less good on long journeys. Most of the anti EV stance is based on lack of money or people buying the wrong car for their needs - much like people buying a modern diesel and using it solely around town being surprised when the DPF clogs up.

Of those 239 EV fires in the UK, are those specifically classed as electric cars? London Fire Brigade class Electric Vehicles as including hoverboards, eScooters, eBikes, mobility vehicles etc. which really skews the results.

I suspect that of those 239 EV fires, quite a few would not have even resulted in thermal runaway either.And with the newer cars having different battery types, some could never do that anyway, certainly, some of the SSB’s can’t from my admittedly limited understanding

I wonder how that 339 figure stacks up when aggregated against how many ev's versus ice vehicles are on the road. Then there's the stolen and burnt variety (of which im a victim). And then also there's the age difference. Lots more old ice vehicles v ev. Stats can be interpreted in a myriad of different ways depending on your bias.

@@rambleon3698 The figures I have seen, pointed to pro-rata EV’s being far less likely to catch fire, I will admit this data was about 6 months ago, so could have changed, but taking into account that EV’s have been around for over a decade, and battery composition has improved, making them less likely to suffer thermal runaway, I would expect the data to have gotten better, not worse. And as technology advances, ICE cars will not be advancing, while EV’s will. That isn’t to say anyone should be complacent, fires are bad, what ever the cause.
