I enjoyed G4 when I was in high school. It changed my life and everything I knew about video games. I would watch Filter, Judgment Day, Cheat, Icons, and reruns of Starcade religiously. When I was in college, the games were still there, but slowly dwindled. I did have high hopes for the revival too. If they ever make a third comeback, maybe take it slow and not as expensive and maybe air on KZfaq and Twitch.

G4's return should have been online only utilizing KZfaq, Twitch and other platforms or gone to streaming platform. By the time they came back...TV was in the ground. It wasn't gonna survive even if that rant didn't happen. Should've imo had their shows streaming live and getting people all over the gaming world to kinda produce things they were already doing but with bigger budget on their platform. Streamers were doing shows and variety shit by that point, would have been perfect if they just gave them an actual show with a higher budget to do stuff. Could've gotten KZfaq giants like Markiplier, Jack, Pewdiepie, Matpat and more to essentially show up or even do shows on the channel or stream it. Get up and comers or people who are smaller but doing stuff for a long time to also participate. It upsets me how G4's return could have easily still be ongoing and fun if they didn't put it only back on TV. Or if it was gonna be on TV, be just a few hour block on an appropriate channel. Give em like 4 to 5 hours a day to do their shit replay it online so that either way people are watching.

Yeah, G4 reboot's death wasn't really Fross's rant, but more so that all the content...kind of sucked. They didn't really evolve their content from the more dudebro gaming attitudes of the late 2000s-early 2010s, and when they tried to do something different, it kind of fell flat. Scott The Woz doing a show on there was kind of cool, but it was pretty much all of their new shows.

@Ijustusethistocommentstuff To me G4 should be a totally ridiculous gaming focused channel. X-Play being back is fine but just making it a ridiculous review/skit show would have been fine but with an after show with people discussing games, hanging out, having interviews and having fun as That's their vibe. Other stuff definitely could have been shows and content based on creators that exist doing shit for them as a show. Likely wouldn't have happened because they have their own platforms, but a Linus Tech Tips show about tech and tech news with jokes and stuff would have been cool of course get others who would be able to do it but hold a respectable opinion and are as knowledgeable. Streamers having funding to do their kind of dumb shows that they were already kind of doing but with a bit more of a budget. Hell have a show focused like a dumb late night show or something but it's talking to people in the industry or people who have been doing gaming content for the past while. From big channels to moderately small to big up and comers. Just anything to actually take advantage of what people liked and wanted at the time. Hell if you asked me I would have reached out to creators replayed highlights from gaming videos and let's plays to highlight these channels and shit so that we can share in appreciation for all types of gamers, streamers and big and small.

Thank you for mentioning Z Channel! One thing you did forget to mention was that within their first few years, they were a pretty big deal with celebrities and people working for the Academy Awards especially, with claims that movies like “Henry & Tonto” and “Annie Hall” won their awards thanks to repeated showings on Z during Oscars season.

Three other good suggestions would be Discovery Times, Style and Esquire. Discovery Times is where true crime buffs like myself could catch episodes of "The FBI Files," Style is where people could watch shows such as "Clean House" or "Running in Heels."

The thing is that I agree with Frosk’s criticism, but it might have been the right place or time. While people like to blame her for G4’s demise, the channel doomed due to the fact I don’t think it was very many cable or satellite systems.

In latin america, Jetix was its own channel, replacing Fox Kids. It became Disney XD and died some years ago.

it was the same in eastern europe, although instead of rebranding to disney xd, jetix rebranded to disney channel (at least in hungary, czechia-slovakia and romania, poland chosed the disney xd side)

Toon Disney was my introduction to the 90s Spiderman cartoon as it would air on Jetix and I remember W.I.T.C.H being my absolute favorite show as a kid (like seriously put that on Disney+)

Toon Disney, Disney XD, Noggin, The N and G4 were all huge parts of my childhood and I miss them. I didn’t watch G4 during their relaunch aside from clips and I still think the brand itself deserves to keep going in some form. And the way it was mismanaged is just so heartbreaking😢

El Rey Network is another discontinued channel I really miss a lot, they use to show reruns of classic shows, cult classics and grindhouse movies, that channel was my first exposure to Pumpkinhead, Road Games, dolemite, and Etc.

Surprised to see Z Channel here, but I'm glad you mentioned it. I saw the same documentary as you, and it struck me as being if Criterion was run by one guy, who unfortunately wasn't the healthiest. It's a good example of the curiosities of early cable before it became so homogenous.

There wasn't really much different history in terms of the Canadian version anyway, with the only big difference being that Rogers Communications owned the Canadian G4, and it took the slot for the former biography channel. Other than that, it was kinda similar, and I think it lasted a bit longer too.

@@ultraflamz64 Most likely because adult swim wasn't in Canada prior to 2012, which was when Cartoon Network launched in Canada, and as a result, so did Adult Swim. So chances were that G4 Canada had the rights to those shows to serve as the "defacto" Adult Swim

It really felt like reality punched us in the face as a way of telling us that the og G4 2as forever dead, and better offf that eay, and to stop hoping that things like Blockbuster and Jetix would make a comeback and let them be the dead things they are. I personally just wanted X-Play back and even that, OBVIOUSLY, backfired in my face. Such a shame

You should totally talk about Smile of a Child, which got rebranded as Smile TV. It's main focus was a christan kids channel, and it aired shows like Veggie Tales and some car show. It got combined with Juce TV, before dying in 2017.

Lets go! also, wow, that G4 segment was handled very well considering its the most taxing to make research on while the whole Frosk situation making Gamergate shtick returned on KZfaq, which soured more G4 researching content. Reviving a dedicated channel is rough. Also a morbid idea I have is imagine if they get Midnight Spank returning and they just aired Helluva Boss and Eddsworld. It would be tough to actually manage how insane the censorship would be if these both or any web-series aired on the channel but they manage to not censored Scott the Woz swearing.

I'd like to see you cover AZN Television in the next video if possible. It was originally named The International Channel and had programs from Fuji TV, TV Tokyo, MBC, ABS-CBN, The Filipino Channel, and among others. As far as I remember, I recall The International Channel airing programs like Game KNB, Philippines Tonight, Journal de France, MBC Best Theater, Pop Japan TV, Dragon Ball Z (uncut), Dragon Ball GT (uncut), The Slayers, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Tenchi Universe, MoonPhase and The Record of Lodoss War. They changed their name to AZN Television by 2006 and dropped anything that isn't from an Asian country hence its name. The network was shut down in 2008, unfortunately. AZN Television introduced me to Dragon Ball GT and a bunch of animated programs most other people never heard of at the time.

Thanks for doing this! Early G4 era was good. It wasn't until they merged with TechTV when things gone down hill. Their pitiful attempt at a revival was laughable. We didn't need them anymore, what with youtube content creators making content and Twitch with live game streams, we pretty much moved on since their first departure. So good riddance. Plus, Adam Sessler just lost his mind and rants on Twitter(x) like a tool.

The return of G4 was a hit topic for me and my friends were all hanging out watching G4 (like old times with Pizza and beer etc.), when Frost went ape sh*t. The entire house went silent. It was like a bad movie moment when the villain that everybody thought was a great guy just revealed themselves unintentionally while on the air. You could hear a pin drop. Granted we voiced complaints about her, and they had nothing to do with her looks, it was the fact that she showed very little interest in the channels subject matter and would get vocal if anybody tried to correct her on any misinformation she'd give or constantly changing her story for whatever reason (it's the script writers fault, etc.). G4 tried to back pedal by saying it was a joke (which Frost never admitted to if that was the case), but you could see the discomfort this gave her co-hosts (they weren't in on this joke if that's what it was). The audience gave her what she wanted... we left.

26:14 to add to this comment, another early example of mocap can be found in 1993: moxy from "the moxy show" started out as the host of "the great international toon-in," a marathon of animated shorts simulcast on TBS (US), TNT (US & latin america), and cartoon network (US, latam, & europe). the bumpers from this marathon looked laggy because the mocap was being done in real time, but regardless definitely one hell of an advancement.

I hate to be the person that corrects. But in the "Sprout" segment, it was mentioned that HiT was sold to NBCUniversal. But that is somewhat incorrect. What actually happened is that when HiT was being sold to Mattel in 2012 (they only wanted Thomas), the sale didn't include their share of Sprout. So their share was sold to NBCU.

There really was no direction with G4 besides trying to cash in on nostalgia, I actually enjoyed the new AOTS but beyond that the network really didn't have much to offer. They had a good idea syndicating KZfaq channels like Scott but didn't do anything with it beyond him. Maybe they should have looked into eSports broadcasting

Funny thing, G4's ultimate mission was *supposed to be* covering eSports, but never getting there. Doesn't help that the gaming industry was beginning to underwhelm during this time, after frequently aiming for a spiteful audience or overthrowing "casual habit" games.

I recall watching the commercial during the Super Bowl for a 3D episode of the show Chuck, with old fashion 3D glasses. I was nauseated after that. I can't imagine how people actually watched the show next night. It's one thing when the 3D is nice and flat in a comic book, it's another when it's moving.

If you follow up this Discontinued Channels video with a third video, you should cover Audience Network. It was a channel specific only towards DirectTV subscribers that ceased operations in early 2020. It was known most for its show “Undeniable with Dan Patrick”-where Dan would interview prominent athletes. As well as the docuseries “Religion of Sports”.

The G4 story reminded me of Animax in the Latin American feed. It started as a 24-hour Anime channel, but in late 2008 (recession) Sony put a new manager and changed the programming to only American TV shows. The otakus and anime fans sent many death threats to her on social media.

IMO, the original G4 run was like one 24-hour long Mountain Dew commercial, with constant pandering, only to turn into "Spike TV Jr.". Then I felt like the second run of G4 was destine for failure, since much like gaming magazines, there were plenty of other sites to get video game news and reviews, It stopped being "appointed" viewing. That, and I personally held a grudge, since TechTV debuted on the local cable system when they expanded to "digital cable". And while TechTV was on the "why are you spending this much money on cable" tier of channels, it was still a fun channel to watch, and the merger that killed TechTV, only made me hate G4 that much more.

Man I missed Jetix and Toon Disney!!! I used to watch Jetix every day along with Toon Disney! Everyday they showed Disney Cartoons and Power Rangers! I loved Power Rangers in Disney Era!!

Really miss the good old days of g4. Use to love coming home after school to watch xplay, cheat, judgment day...etc. Definitely remember those sat nights watching cinematech nocturnal emissions and discovering a whole bunch of weird Japanese games for the first.

Hey! I have two suggestions for the next one The Hub Network (Known for shows about toys, and dan vs lol) and UPN (known for everybody hates chris, dilbert and home movies. Their shows were moved to the cw and home movies and dilbert on adult swim)

For clarity with the Z Channel guy: he didn't "know which movies were great and which movies were shit" because that's a subjective matter. He knew which movies he liked and which he didn't, that's it. There's no special knowledge any critic has that lets them objectively know which media is great and which isn't and everyone else's opinions are just as important and valid as those of critics.

G4 and Attack of the Show, a pair of shows which right after school i would rush over to the TV and switch over quickly, during summer break I'd watch E3 on TV commercial free, live on air, which was incredible! The show would start at 3:30 pm and i lived close to school to home, my cousin and I saw the last episode of X-Play back in 2013? 2014? Which was heartbreaking, but i saw many of the game reviewers as smaller X-Play spin offs
