This Dell was in pretty bad shape, repeated use after the hinge broke resulted in broken WiFi antennas as well. Full strip and rebuild ensues.

I like these vids because I use stuff till it turns to dust. For the last few years I've been playing with different adhesives, epoxies and goops to repair plastic stuff. My go to is E-6000 and PC-11 epoxy paste.

My Inspiron 7559 had similiar problem where the plastic had broken on the base where the hinge screws in on the left side. Today, will go with epoxy to fix the base first as spare base plate is just hard to come by for half a decade old laptop.

Incredible. I have the exact problem, my laptop gutted in front of me. Got stuck into taking the frame from the screen assembly, and was even able to give the screen a small crack on the glass. It still works, but I think replacing the antena is beyond my skill level. I will still decide if it is worth to to change the bottom frame or just let it go from this 7-year old laptop... A cautionary tale of why you should never purchase an inspiron.. How many of these otherwise functional laptops have gone to waste because 10 generations in and they still can't build a decent hinge? Good on you for fixing it but the practice of building laptops like this along with emmc laptops and chrome books are why we're all going to drown in old e-waste someday..

"Modern laptops are built like junk." Couldn't agree more. I'm more of a home gamer (I do work on laptops, but just from friends who happen to know I'm into this as a hobby) and it's astonishing just to how low of a standard most consumer-grade laptops are built these days. It's why my go-to protip has been to recommend people buy used business-class laptops. I've had nothing but success with Latitudes and Precisions and I've heard EliteBooks and Zbooks are pretty decent from friends who own them. Machines are built to last AND are generally easy to service, too.

I think I suggest old BUSINESS CLASS laptops to start with because those are the easiest to open up. They have official manuals and they are unlikely to fall apart as soon as you open them. I remember training my friend for this job with a Dell Latitude D830 and even with its magnesium casing and steel hinges he managed to snap the magnesium at one part and almost rip out the display cable. He's a lot better now though Starting with something too brittle like an old scrap laptop might extinguish whatever confidence the person has though

Honestly, it doesn't come out nearly as bad as I thought. While I was recording it was _loud_ out there, but after the mic filters I probably could've cut that whole bit and no one would've noticed that there were roadworks right outside. I'd definitely give RTX Voice a whirl if RTX-series GPUs were affordable enough to chuck in the recording rig. As things are, there's little benefit to me upgrading the GTX 960 I encode on.

They're usually in the screen as it moves them away from more shielded areas of the laptop. But broadly speaking, anywhere will work. I've left replacement antennas tucked in wherever there's a gap on laptops before and they've worked just fine. Screen is optimal, but anywhere is good enough.

do you have good success convincing customers to upgrade to an SSD? I'm sure you don't push it too much, after all it's their money and their device, but I'm just curious. I don't do laptop repairs (though I have done one for my sister), but I have helped with a lot of PC builds, and even for new builds a lot of people seem to prioritize everything else over an SSD. Even something as non-trivial as a more fancy motherboard...
@Adamant_IT

I've started up-selling a bit more, because I know that when they feel their laptop with an SSD in it, they'll be like "oh heck this was worth every penny..." I've had people call up just to tell me how amazed they are at the difference it made. That makes me braver about pushing an upgrade in cases where there's technically nothing wrong with the HDD.

@@Adamant_IT That makes sense! I hate Dell for that. My 5547 model cracked twice without any pressure at all! Not hinge but the front plastic cover next to the power button. Really shitty body. It's a known problem...

Hey @Adamant It, can you recomend me a robust laptop? (not specs that i can manage) I thought Dell laptops are better than HP and the rest, but now after seeing this video i just dont know, so can you recomend me a laptop brand that i can take and go to war with? lol ( i will buy a laptop arround 600 GBP)

Tbh they're all as bad as each other. I'm a big fan of Dell Latitude, they're tougher than the inspirons because Business-class.

I'm going to send you a non spill cup, I cringe every time I see you sip from your mug that sits next to computers you are working on.

The trick is that it's never within my arm's sweep-range. I always have to reach to pick it up. But yea, something something don't put mugs next to your laptop.

I see they fix potholes in your country as they do here in New York. Not well.

It's because the bezels are becoming slimmer and would be harder to route cables up the side and placement at the top of the lid.
