Hey I appreciate your testing of the dock including this follow-up. I wanted to know myself, so I bought one of those docks for my 2019 16" MBP. And I totally regret that. If you want to use your MBP productively, use an Elgato dock instead. Every morning when I connect my MBP to the dock, the dock won't wake up by itself. After I woke it up in most cases I have to disconnect and reconnect the TB-Cable up to 7 or 8 times until all Screens work, USB works and I can just use it as intended. But the "fun" doesn't stope there: When I send my MBP to sleep during i.e. break I often have the samle problem again after waking it up. Sometimes Screen A works and the USB from Screen B works too, but not Screen B itself. Sometimes both screens work, but USB from Screen B won't work. This normally requires me to reconnect the TB-Cable again and again until it works just fine. Well - now I know for sure and I can't recommend this dock in its (and Mac OS's) current state of compatibility.

The 2 monitors are each Dell P2422H and a Dell WD19 docking station. 1 monitor directly plugged into the MBP with HDMI. The second monitor connects to the Dell power dock via HDMI. USB-C from the dock then plugged into the MBP. I also downloaded display link on my MBP. The monitor mirroring my MBP happened as default. Amazing. Thank you!

You don't have to buy another expensive dock just to connect a display. I have 2x27" 4k displays running on a 2018 MacBook Pro 13" at full resolution without any problems. One is connected to the WD19TB's DisplayPort output. Another one connects to WD19TB's Thunderbolt jack on the back, using an active Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort adapter. @BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ryan Lee, to get the MBP to work with dual monitors with the WD19TB you must connect the second monitor using the thunderbolt port at the back of the dock. Since most people don't have a USB-C monitor, you will need a converter from USB-C to either HDMI/Display-port/VGA/DVI what ever your second monitor cable will be. So in my instance I had the DA300 handy and used that as a converter from USB-C to Display-port. You don't need the Dell D6000 that is another docking station entirely. I hope that clears it up a little bit for you =).

I have a Macbook Pro 2017(touch bar) and I have three external monitors that I want it connected to while I close my Macbook lid. They're all HD monitors with HDMI/Display ports. Thanks

I have this docking station, a 5k monitor and a 2k monitor. I'm trying to plug both monitors into my dock, which then plugs into my macbook pro m1. What happens is the 5k resolution is dropped to 2k to match the 2k monitor, and the two external monitors are duplicating the image. When both monitors are connected, the 5k monitor doesn't even appear in displays. How can I get this to work?

I continue to struggle to find a plug-and-play solution for Dual monitors for both my Dell Laptop and my Macbook Pro (touchbar). Maybe this is it. I only need dual external monitors so using one on HDMI and one on TB is ok for me so long as I have one cable to plug into my laptops. I don't believe my Latitude 5500 is a TB connection rather a regular USB-C connection so wondering if this will end up working for me given you had to use the TB connection from the dock. Thoughts?
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean Cunningham, I understand how hard this could be trying to find a simple plug and play solution for both MBP and windows laptop to have just even dual monitors (simple request yet Apple made it so hard). I do know that the Latitude 5500 can be configured come with USB-C non-thunderbolt chip. If you are looking to use both my suggestion is to not look for a thunderbolt dock since the Latitude 5500 isn't going to support it. I made a little video about finding out number of lanes for thunderbolt but you can use this same video to find out if your USB-C port is thunderbolt or not (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMufnd16lc_Qnas.html) if you don't see any thunderbolt listed after plugging things to the USB-C on your laptop then you know you got the non-thunderbolt version. As for Dock recommendation if you have non-thunderbolt version of the 5500 look for an universal dock that uses Displaylink, two examples Dell D6000 and Totu Universal USB-C 4k docks. Using Displaylink drivers will make both the MBP and windows laptops work with the Dock but be noteful there is a drawback on Displaylink docks they do run the CPU harder than have thunderbolt docks natively render the display for the monitors. With DisplayLink will do extra encoding of the video signal to output to the monitors. I hope this assist with you finding a solution.

Thank you for your in depth review of those very important accessories almost nobody cares in YT ;-) Any chance to test this one on a PC laptop ? I had the chance to use the D6000 (who has no TB3 port, just USB-C) with a 2018 XPS 15 and managed to connect 3 ext. monitors (one 4k + one 2.5k + one FHD) + the XPS internal 4k one by connecting one directly to the HDMI port. So in total 4 monitors with just a USB-C dock ! The only problem came from the software Displaylink as the monitors connected could not use the "night light" option included in W10 and it is a shame as I always use it by night. And Dell customer Service confirmed me there will not be an update :-( As I maybe will buy a new XPS 15 with 2 TB3 + 1 USB-C, I could imagine connect again my 3 monitors but, in this case, by using the WD19TB in order to use all the W10 features :-)

Hi Bsian, thanks for the video. I have a question though: Will the same setup work with Dell WD19S? BTW- I have two HP VH240a monitors and they have HDMI and VGA out. So I am using one HDMI to DP cable and for other I am using HDMI cable and HDMI-USB-C adaptor. So one monitor goes in DP and the other goes to thunderbolt on the dock.
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Vaibhav Chokhawala, I am taking a guess you a running a Mac and trying to get this to work in dual extended monitor display. The WD19S won't be able to do it, you need the WD19TBS the thunderbolt version, how you are describing is correct but HDMI-USB-C adaptor goes into the USB-C(thunderbolt port) at the back of the WD19TBS. Also this is for the Macs with the Intel processor, if you have a Mac with the M1 processor then this dock doesn't work for it at all. Apple broke this thunderbolt dual display support. If you have a Mac with M1 processor you will need to look for a Dock that runs off DisplayLink Drivers, these are considered as Universal Docks, usually with USB-C with USB-A adapter included.

I don't have a DA300 but I tried it with another USB-C-HDMI adapter and it worked too. BUT: my external screens are QHD and the one which is connected via the extra adapter is capped at 30Hz and it's notably laggy. If I reduce the resolution to Full-HD i can set it to 60Hz. If I connect it with the same adapter directly to the macbook I can get 60Hz. This is a warning to others with similar setups like this! For me it's not a usable solution

HI Marcelo, if you use a hdmi to usb-c adapter into thunderbolt port it will work too, I have tested this on the dell DA adapters, the Apple adapters and Alogic and StarTech adapter which I have here so it seems pretty universal. With the Windows PC I have the Latitude 5401 and 7400 connected to the WD19TB and it will work with 3 external monitors in extended desktop mode fine (using the HDMI, 2x Displayport configurations) so you can do it with any configurations just be mindful the HDMI and USB-C (DP) port at the back share hardware so only one will work at a given time for display output.

BsianDad I would be interested to know that too, I would think it may relate to how high the resolution the monitors are and the strength of the internal or external graphics card but I’m not sure about this, it would be an interesting experiment. The Mac should do pretty well as we know they will run with a 5K monitor nicely.

So, to confirm: 1) monitor via HDMI --> WD19TB. 2) monitor via DP --> DA300 via usb-c --> WD19TB. correct?? lastly, wanted to confirm a few more things: 3) Did the laptop fan go on at any point?? have you tried this config for extended periods of time?? 4) Did the dock heat up at any point? Also glad to hear from some comments that 3rd party adapters have worked.

Can anyone help? I have the WD19TBS and a MacBook Pro (not M1). I will buy two monitors, but what connections must they have to use this dock in extended display, both HDMI and DisplayPort? Because the dock can take one USBC and one HDMI? The monitor I was planning to buy 2 of has HDMI only. I plan to use the computer in clamshell docked.
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Rachel Hooper, you have to have one of the monitors off the HDMI port on the dock and the second monitor run off an adapter from HDMI to USB-C. Then plug that monitor into the USB-C port at the back of the WD19TBS (not the front USB-C port) to get dual extended display for the Macbook Pro.

i have a Dell Thunderbolt Dock - WD19TB and I am having issues getting 2 4k monitors to display at 4k. one will show 4k and the other in HD, both using the display ports on the dock. Any thoughts?
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi jordan slaughter, assuming your laptop has thunderbolt and that the dock is connected to the correct thunderbolt port (not just a USB-C port, some laptops have both), knowing that you are able to get one 4k monitor to work with the WD19TB, I know and from the documentation the WD19TB does support dual 4k@60hz monitors on thunderbolt connection to the computer. What I actually suspect instead is actually the second monitor might have a faulty DisplayPort cable or a DisplayPort 1.2 cable which would effectively bring the second monitor resolution to FHD. If you try swap the working 4k monitor cable to the second screen just to see if that would bring that second monitor to 4k mode or not. Other thought I would be also be doing is upgrading your graphics drivers too as this could effect driving the second monitor or installing the proper monitor drivers for the actual monitor as that can also limp the monitor when display is extended mode. Hope one of these tips could help your issue. WD19Tb supported resolutions(www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/04/dell-wd19tb-dock/wd19_tb_userguide/display-resolution-table?guid=guid-5558fc88-5c31-4e2c-90be-42359855a1ae&lang=en-us).

@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew Ma, there is support for dual 4K with the WD19TB, you need to make sure first your laptop has thunderbolt which this dock connects to. As for dual 4K support pretty much as long as the monitors isn't connected to the USB-C port (thunderbolt port which is at the end of the dock is okay), else all other display ports is fine. You can find more information here: www.dell.com/support/manuals/au/en/audhs1/dell-wd19tb-dock/wd19_tb_userguide/display-resolution-table?guid=guid-5558fc88-5c31-4e2c-90be-42359855a1ae&lang=en-us

Matthew Ma if it’s a MacBook 16 then you can use one DisplayPort or HDMI port for one monitor and the second monitor must go through the thunderbolt port at the back of the WD19TB (you can use a converter to USB-C if need be) else it will only go in mirror mode.

So far in my testing yes but there is one scenario I haven't tested which is to have a thunderbolt monitor, have the one monitor connected via DP or HDMI, second monitor being a true thunderbolt monitor connected via thunderbolt port then have a third monitor connected to the thunderbolt monitor to see if the MBP is able to do three external extended monitors.

I preface my comment by saying I am only very recently learning about this stuff so please feel free to correct anything I get wrong. From what I understand, another way to use multiple monitors is on many recent monitors themselves by daisy-chaining the monitors ie, linking them from the input of a single USB-C from the laptop, this requires the laptops output of said USB-C to have multiple lanes, 3 lane usb for instance, this allows you to then plug a single USB C cable to the first monitor and then use additional cables to connect from the back of that monitor to a second monitor and potentially a 3rd monitor or from the second monitor to a 3rd monitor. Using this method requires computers that were released from intel 7 series I think it is and having the multi-lane USB-C. As you can likely tell my knowledge on this subject is a bit unsure so please before investing money check into all this before going ahead. As a bonus, this system is very clean as depending on the monitor, you only need 1 cable going to and from your laptop as the high band USB-C will not only transfer the data but it will also charge your laptop. If you pair this with a wireless keyboard and mouse you have a really clean and tidy setup....well until you fill it with stuff like my desk 😋

@@BsianTech Well I have had Dell in the past, one currently sits unused on my desk, they generally make great monitors too, I wasn't aware they had a USB-C one as I have not looked at them recently, I have previously bought the monitors focused on colour calibration from Dell, I think I have only ever had one issue with one monitor and it was too much light bleed but the warranty crew were really great to deal with.

You will need to install first the displaylink drivers for the mac (can be found here: www.displaylink.com/downloads/macos) after installing it make sure in System Perferences > Security that you allow Displaylink manager to run. After that just start up the application DisplayLink Manager and the dock will start to display to the external monitors. As for the USB headset it should just work on the mac, even through the dock without displaylink drivers installed. If it doesn't work I would suggest to go to the headset website and look for the drivers for the mac to install Anh Ngyyen. Hope that help you out.

Hi BsianDad, I have a 2019 MacBook Pro, two Dell QHD monitors, the WD19TB dock and the DA300. I have the MacBook connected via Thunderbolt to the dock. One of the monitors is connected to the DP port on the dock. I connected the DA300 to the Thunderbolt 3 port on the dock (not the USB-C Multifunction DisplayPort) and then Display Port to the monitor. The problem is whichever monitor is connected through the DA300 only has a 1080p resolution. The one connected directly to the DP port has QHD resolution. I've switched the monitors between the two ports to be sure it isn't a cable/monitor problem. But when I connect the DA300 straight in to a Thunderbolt port on the MacBook it get QHD resolution on both screens. This is a workaround but also a bit of a pain. Any ideas?
