My 1998 Delta Monitor 1700 series shower faucet was dripping water, and I also couldn't budge the temperature adjust. Here's how I fixed it by replacing the cartridge with a RP32104 replacement cartridge.

0:56 - Disassembling the Shower Faucet
5:15 - Replacing Seats and Springs
12:20 - Caulking the Faucet Plate

Well presented video. Good lighting, clear narration, well lit and framed, no distracting music. Looks like you got the job done pretty efficiently I think if you'd called Delta, they'd have sent you the cartridge for free. These have a lifetime warranty. Maybe the trim kit too. Looks like you need a new handle. If you buy a replacement trim kit, which includes the handle, it will also come with the cartridge. When you use the channel locks to remove the nut ring, you can see the whole body twisting a little before it broke free. If were on there just a little more stubbornly, that might have destroyed the valve body. Another video recommends cutting the ring off it takes excessive torque to remove. Whatever torque needed there is reacted by the valve body and the plumbing behind it. Also, those two screws, one on either side of the valve body just inside the wall, are shutoff stops. If you turn them clockwise until they seat, it shuts the water off at the valve body, so you don't need to shut the water off at the main supply. You might have soaked the pieces in some vinegar or something to loosen some of the scale before re-assembly. The forgotten piece is the escutcheon. Easy to forget the sequence when you are on a roll, and your attention is on the functional parts.

I soaked my escutcheon in vinegar today when I changed my cartridge. The brass ring was a PITA for me and I was able to get it out by filing a small groove in the outside edge then using a hammer and chisel to break the thread lock. This video was super helpful and Murky's comment here was super helpful too.

How would you cut off the brass ring that he removed with channel pliers to make sue you don't ruin the valve body? You would have the room to use a hacksaw.

As a master plumber of 37 yrs, ive been thru most every aspect of faucet repairs. With those older delta valves make damn sure you hold the back valve body with a channellock pliers, and use another for loosening the brass bonnet nut. The older delta valves have 3 small copper tubes attached to the valve body that can twist or break. Spray around the brass bonnet nut with PB blaster or WD 40 and gently tap around the brass bonnet nut, will help loosen. They are very difficult to remove as to age.

This is a SUPER important advice that I hope everyone following the video could see. I was trying to loose the brass bonnet nut with pliers as shown and those 3 copper tubes behind the valve snapped. Had to get emergency plumbing to cut open tiles, backerboard to replace the shower system. It is a very risky move.

I just did this replacement today. Good video. The only problem I have is that I could not see the cartridge in with those new washers that they gave. I inspected the old ones and put some lithium grease back on them and reinserted. So far so good . The other ones that would just not fit and would not allow the cartridge to see properly inside the valve housing.

Thank you so much for this video. POINTERS: if the gaskets fumble out of your hands, use the screwdriver as a rail by putting the screwdriver shaft through the spring and gasket to help you when you out the screwdriver in the whole and just slide the spring and gasket into place and then pull the screwdriver. The water in my house didnt shut off completely for that bathroom. I managed to ace the job while scalding water kept dripping out during the replacement. Totally doable with this video, thank God.

As I was watching your video, I realized that I only needed to work on the actual handle. I soaked the handle and other parts as suggested in other comments. You did good. I like the fact that you cleaned up the shower wall before installing the back plate. Here is a tip for you. There will be a next time. Warm up a 50/50 mix of tap water and white vinegar and immerse the old parts in that for about twenty minutes to an hour. It will break down the calcium build up and the parts will fit together easier and make the overall installation easier too. You might also want to put a very very light coating of plumbers silicon grease on the o-rings. This makes them last longer and install easier.

I liked how you did the video live so we could see all the possible issues while doing the job. Kudos. Not that you plan to redo the job but it looks to me that the big o-ring on the brass valve body should be pulled forward up into the groove on the valve body. It should seal water from getting back behind the trim sleeve. And as others have mentioned, use plumbers silicone grease on every plumbing job. Apply it to seals, o-rings, metal threads, anytime two parts connect. It makes it so you can remove the parts in the future and reduces wear from dry rubbing.

This is exactly what I needed to see. My issue is just that the temperature dial is stuck, but now I may take a look at the cartridge itself. Previous homeowner installed the bathroom and I’ve have owned the place for over four years, but the shower has only been used a handful of times as it is too cold, and is a second bathroom. Just one of those things on the list I haven’t gotten to, but I’ll be checking it out tomorrow. Thanks for the walkthrough in all your rationale. Definitely helps to see you thinking everything through.

As I’m an amateur who is willing to *try* home repairs, your style and delivery are reassuring. (I talk to myself on these types of things and it takes me much longer as I’m inclined to screw it up if I rush and going slow is no guarantee for success). In a similar situation (believing the cartridge to be filled with scale is causing the drip from the tub spout) but struggling to determine which cartridge to buy. I, too, have Delta shower faucets. With so many home repairs, they’re usually never straight-forward and I lack the experience to know how to work around it. Typically, that’s where KZfaq comes in. In some cases, I have to phone a friend or call in a pro. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Thanks, Scott. This was very helpful to us. We had to soak all of our parts in CLR for a couple days to soften and remove the mineral deposits. Also, the plumber had installed chrome finish, despite the fact that all other fixtures had nickel / stainless steel. I sanded the bright chrome and it's a fair match to the stainless steel.

Thank you, I also completed this over the weekend. The bonnet nut was also tight. I sprayed CLR and bought two tools at Home Depot. One was the Channellock 442 V-Jaw and the Husky $13 strap wrench. The Channellock wouldn't even budge it, and I felt if I went ham on it, it would destroy the nut. I highly suggest buying an extra bonnet nut before attempting such a repair. The strap wrench slipped right off the first time. Second time, it broke it loose so I recommend the strap wrench. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the vid, and having the image of the tap style as the lead thumbnail. After viewing some of these videos (of which only yours had my exact body and handle style from 2005) I checked all the regular Home Depot and Lowes websites for the part. Thankfully in a way, the part I thought I needed was an order and ship item $104 Cdn. So tried the local plumbing suppliers and was told it would be under warranty and free... Didn't even have to go to original installer, they just handed to me and walked out the door - Yahoo. One thing your vid did not touch on was that the new part and the old are slightly different. The new part has that little plastic tab at bottom for no apparent reason (can see for a miniscule of a second in your vid if looking for it, is slightly taller/ longer and the main white cap seems to rotate. I think that last part makes the water temp selection a lot more smooth, almost too smooth so that when cleaning you will knock it and change the set temp?? But no leaks so that's the whole point. Good video.

I have the same model faucet. I replaced the cartridge a few years ago, but used your video for a much-needed refresher. Here's a seriously weird thing about this model faucet: It won't work properly if you don't have both the hot and cold water on. Apparently the cartridge uses both supplies to regulate a pressure switch. I forgot to turn the cold water valve back on and had fits trying to get it the faucet to work properly until I caught my mistake. I'd never run into anything like that before. This is a great tutorial, but you need to be extra careful when removing that large ring that you don't twist the entire pipe. If the ring is stuck on there, the pipe will start moving, And it can potentially snap off. That is what happened to me, I tried grabbing the back of it with another channel lock, but the next time I moved it I heard a hiss as pressure came from the back where it just broke. Unfortunately for me, this was for a customer, and I am incapable of fixing it. I had to tell him he's going to have to hire a plumber and they will have to either resolder the back or replace the whole part. Just be extra careful and watch to make sure that that pipe doesn't move, and grab it with another wrench if you can

I started running into issues getting the "bonnet nut" off. Turns out that piece is pretty thin. When I grabbed it with the pliers, the pliers compressed the ring and made it impossible to turn. The trick is to grab the ring as close to the front as possible so you're not putting pressure on the threads. Then it came off pretty easily.

Question. While replacing the cartridge on mine, i had trouble removing the brass bonnet/collar. I was in the process of sawing through it because i tried literally everything else when it started to unscrew... Instead of replacing it, I just put it back on. There aren't any apparent leaks... Do you think I'm okay to leave it as it is? There is enough metal there to hold the bonnet together, but it's almost sawed through. Does the bonnet on that type of unit serve any purpose besides holding the cartridge against the springs and keeping the cartridge in place?

1998? Looks like 1898 with all that corrosion. Principles are the same in the TOH and Moen OEM vids. Excellent.

Anyone know how to tell if your 1700 is pre-2006 or post-2006? I had one installed around 2008 and suspect the plumber used an older model. Want to be sure before I order the new part.
