I took my 89 year old dad for this test and was shocked to see how many answers he got wrong…the year, the month, the day, the season..all wrong. Afterwards in the car I asked him how he thought it went and he said he was glad he sailed through the silly test, it was too easy! He’s since been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so things are just going to get tougher….

we're concentrating on the whole test and therefore dismiss bits once they're over - we 'no longer need the address' so don't store it - this is 'all run through the door, if you bump into the frame you're blind' quackery (p.s. this was 2016 - 6 yrs ago, its probably all changed since the mental health system died!)

@@negotiableaffections It certainly has changed. There's an online test which is associated with researchers at Oxford Uni in the UK.I think. I did it several years ago and again recently. I can't think of the name of the group offhand but it's called the "cognitive awareness test". It gets updated regularly and they will give you a report on their findings. I think the group is called "Mind and Body awareness", or similar.

My mom had this test at her primary care doctor’s office for years and always passed with flying colors. It was clear to all us family that she was suffering from some sort of dementia but when she passed this test all the time her doctor wouldn’t take further action. It was only after her endocrinologist noticed some memory issues in conversation he requested a MRI brain scan and finally was diagnosed with FTD behavior type dementia and you could clearly see parts of her brain were just gone. I was told people suffering from FTD generally do quite well on these types of tests for quite some time before they start getting worse.

I could check more than enough boxes to qualify for dementia except for it had to have started recently. Nope, been like that all my life. Interestingly it doesn't affect me as much as someone who actually has dementia. It must be that growing up I learned to cope with it while someone with dementia hasn't. Could be that someone in the early stages of dementia could use some of the common ADD coping skills.

We never asked who the Queen was it was the Prime minister and more testing the leader of the opposition especially when Margaret Thatcher was in office she was there so long, our counting test was to count backwards from 100 in 7s, she went 100, 93, 86, 79 etc faster than I could, also we did a collection of items say 6 and take 2 away, what's missing? She told me what they had been a year ago, cheers John.

My sister in law was having problems with memory which her husband brought up at her doctor's visit. Her doctor gave her a sheet of paper with a blank clock face and asked her to write where 12, 3, 6, 9 would go. She looked up from the sheet of paper and said "I don't understand." Thus became her descent into Alzheimer's which took her life five years later. It was so sad to watch a vibrant, active lady just vanish a little more each day.

A huge shout out to any caregiver doing this alone! I feel your journey. I feel your pain because I've been there. My mom was also diagnosed in her 60s. Feeling absolutely shattered, heartbroken and drained , working with different physicians across the country, used Donepezil and many other drugs, with little or no improvement. I was exhausted and overwhelmed to look any further. Crying a lot through frustration, anger and despair, But today with the help of Homeocure Worldwide Natural Medicine, my mother is completely healthy and well again. I think we only need more support and sunlight to overcome this dreadful disease. Search for support regardless and don't stop until you get it. And that it had 32 questions...That's when he has time to recollect, what with all the excitement of Finland finally breaking off from Russia and the concerns that covid might not end the Korean War the same way it ended World War II in 1917. I think he mentioned that in Mininneandanapolis. Folks, when you're hoping to whip dementia out of your Election 2020 arsenal, all I can say is I promise you DON'T want to go there. Within two years you won’t remember who you are or where you live. Within 2 1/2 years you’ll think your a anteater and have major cravings for red ants. This will lead to being hospitalized on several occasions due to burrowing your face into fire ant holes. Within three years you’ll forget your an anteater and think your a diamond back rattlesnake. In roughly 6 months you’ll be arrested on several occasions due to biting several people and a couple cats. You end up only eating rodents and small lizards, you’ll be forced to eat alone due to the constant hissing sounds you make at the table forcing the other people to jump in fear of being bitten.

Recalling years and months? Many health people have to stop for a second and calibrate "I wrote that email yestrrday, the 27th, so today's the 28th." I especially hate when EMS responders use this as a test after car accident, mishaps. Usually you are flustered, and you mind is not on the internal calendar.

Do you know where the studies are on the efficacy of the 3 word recall test? There are 3 little articles I've found, but not any decent studies to justify giving that test to the elderly. I know it's a standard test and I'm betting someone came up with it decades ago, and it has just been passed on down without any clear research. I'm writing a graphic memoir of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and I've been flummoxed on the actual studies for the 3 word recall test and the cube drawing test. How many people can go grocery shopping with 3 items in mind, and actually remember all three? My college freshmen cannot remember the 3 questions I ask them when they go around the room. Let me know if you can point me in the right direction. Thanks

A friend was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 59. I was told two of the test questions she was asked (and couldn't deal with): 1) Count backwards from 100 by 7's, and 2) draw a picture of a clock. For the latter, all she could draw was a plain circle.

@SonshineLady7

@@A10TOES I have always been horrible at arithmetic - my entire life. My mother, however, loves numbers and worked in accounting/banking type jobs. She was recently tested and the neurologist was surprised that she not only counted backwards by 7's, but did it very quickly. So on that test, I'd fail miserably, my mother aced it, but she has been diagnosed currently with "mild memory loss" but, being with her regularly, her short-term memory is getting very poor. She asks the same questions repeatedly and gets distracted very easily. Apparently it's the totality of various questions/tests that aid in diagnosis.

On a day when conversation is going well and no one’s scheduled to be anywhere, maybe in a neutral and quiet environment, can you ask her what her fears are? Most importantly, it also has to be when you are ready and able to listen actively to really seek to understand, not reply, fix, challenge, reassure or otherwise jump in with your thoughts and emotions. Does she know people who have developed memory loss? What are her observations about how it was handled. What went well? What went poorly. What could have been done differently by the people supporting the individual who had memory loss? Speak to your own doctor about this concern for your mum. The doctor will advise you suggestions they have learned. Research this online. In meantime for you and concerned family to keep a log of concerns as examples when time comes and it has to be assessed because it impacts her normal functioning. @HopeAngel777

I am 39 & have struggle with this since childhood. I check my phone or ask my 13 yr old son. Lol. I forgot the fake address instantly that he said it, although I think that is largely to do with his dead pan, boring nature. I could easily tell him who the queen was or other current topics. Surely identifying objects or foods would be more use? In the intro he said it would be easy for all....... Not the dyslexic's! I also regularly forget how to write with good old fashioned pen & paper........ I am so used to smartphones and dictate to type. I'd be put in a home ! 😂
