Depron wing build - Building a wing from folded 6mm depron using the Experimental Airlines method, with a few tweaks. Leaving the sub-trailing edge about 8mm thick means the aileron blends in nicely to the overall airfoil.
19mm thick x 190mm total chord giving a 10% section with the max thickness 30% back. 1.5m wingspan in 2 halves joined with a Skyshark P4X 7.5mm spar.
Finished weight with 2 x TGY9018 metal gear servos and push rods - 250g
I buy bulk depron from tradewarehouse.com.au The 20 double sized bulk pack for about $212 delivered makes it $5.30 per standard sized board.
Packing tape was from Officeworks. Packs of 5 colours for under $8 (No longer stocked, look in Kmart or on EBAY)

I have 56 years and my pleasure is to make model airplanes from a project because it was with my father who discovered a passion for this sport . and build model airplanes . Rode many Kits Carl Goldberg , Great Planes , House of Balsa, Sig , etc .., and especially onte projects had to cut all the pieces. Excellent video , this is the real modeling . A lesson for those who only think of buying ready model airplanes . Congratulations from Sao Paulo .

Thanks Roberto. I'm always amazed at how nicely the wing airfoil turns out with this method. Designing and building planes is a big part of my enjoyment of this hobby.

Truth Newton! The best of our hobby are the experiences and discoveries of new materials, new techniques and proof that we can change the model airplanes into something simple, inexpensive for anyone to feel the pleasure of flying a model airplane. Seeing their model aircraft fly so well, remember that in 1976, following a Model Airplane News magazine project made a Parasol 1929 model airplane in cardboard boxes refrigerators, kkkkkkk, and his flight was spectacular, it was an unforgettable feeling. congratulations

Andrew, a great instructional Video, straight to the point. I think you should mention the very important fact that you are using Aero grade Depron sheet for wing making in this clip and not the denser standard grade Depron which I use for making a Fuz. In your clip, you simply grooved the LE fold using rounded end dowel, a great method, but unsuitable with the denser grade as its just not possible. Aero grade Depron is 25% less dense than standard grade Depron, and if you are making wings, it makes a big difference. When I make a Fuz, I use standard grade, and cut and glue with joins, not folds, which makes the Fuz a lot stronger.

Thanks English, I'm not aware of the different grades of depron, this is just the cheapest building material I can buy. I do the same as you with fuselage corners, Flite Test "A folds".

Excellent tutorial! I am now the proud owner of two freshly made depron wings using your/ExperimentalAirlines technique for the first time:-)! One thing I found is that it might be good to put the first strip of tape so it spans the leading edge fold. If not (no prizes for guessing how I know), the tape may loosen and/or Depron break, if the fold ends up close to where one strip joins to the next. Looking forward to receiving some spars so I can join the wings and start on the fuse! Regards, Matthew

Great video. Thank you very much, that gave me a lot of inspiration ;-) I did a full length depron sheet build (2 times 80 cms, total 1,6m span, 17 cm chord, 4 cm ailerons) and wanted to do fulll span flaperons. They turned out a little soft, so I'm thinking, a little reinforcement might be good.Do you sometimes need to stiffen up your ailerons wit a separate spar, balsa or cf?
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 9 жыл бұрын
LaLaObeRoT On big wings (greater than 1.5m) I have found the roll rate is always quite slow and that could be partly due to flexy ailerons. But no I have never stiffened them with spars. What thickness is your depron?
@LaLaObeRoT
@LaLaObeRoT 9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Newton Thanks for your answer. I use regular 6mm depron. I ended up making new ailerons as the regular ones really seemed to flexible. I made them from 3mm strips of depron. I glued them together with low viscosity epoxy and put a few carbon roving fibres in between. This all adds a tiny amount of weight and takes away a little bit of the beautiful simplycity of the Armin wing. The result is quite satisfying, nevertheless. Stiff but still flexy enough to follow the bend of the wing. The plane is a pusher, meant for FPV. Skywalker style. Successfull maiden was on sunday :-)

DLG wing needs to be very thin and strong so this would not be the best build method. But you could make a DLG that you throw gently I guess.

"Bob", I've built everything from from Comet and Sterling's tissue paper covered models during the fifties, (and still have a bunch in the attic btw), to 14 ' sailpanes now, so I wanted to give you a piece of advice about making your own spars, you can either buy an 8' long 2"x 4" piece of kiln dried douglas fir, cut it in half (4') and then using an electric planer from Harbor Freight smooth all the sides prior to cutting as many 1/4" x 1/2" or 1/8" x 3/8" spars as you will need in this lifetime. Doug-fir is slightly heavier than Sitka spruce but it is also stronger so you can build some fairly large models if that's what you want or you can just use it as a spar in a three foot slope glider, or what ever you prefer just as well - or you can just buy a spruce spar at the hobby shop for the same price as what you will pay for an eight foot section of doug-fir which you can make about (36) 1/4" x 1/2" spears from, the choice is yours. The only drawback here is you may have to purchase a small table saw but if you get into building like I and several other people I know the saw will pay for itself. Almost forgot, you could also purchase standard fiberglass arrow shafts from an archery store or off the internet and I've yet to have any break yet, and these are in some models which were built some thirty-five years ago.
