In this second chat with fitted furniture maker Derek Barrett at his workshop, he shows me the inner workings of an edgebander, demonstrates how it applies paintable edge banding to mdf, shows me the shaker doors he makes using a stuck on strips method, and more:
- board storage carts on wheels
- Festool HK 85 saw and it’s ability to cut extra large angles
- Undermount drawer runners from Poland that work with 18mm board thickness
- Ryobi tools including a battery powered palm router.

You two are amazing, Derek has stripped everything down to its component level and examined every process to save time and money. Using the Kreg was a complete eye opener as I was saving for a Domino or Lamello. No point. You have to follow this up as to what you change in your own new workshop. Only just caught up with this episode and it’s a gem 👍🏻 👌👍🏻 thank you so much and hope you got home okay.

Great video, still can’t see why anyone with a workshop who does fitted furniture doesn’t have an edgebander, side drilling cnc and a cnc, saves so much time and effort. Pre mill on an edgebander isn’t essential when cut on cnc. Half them tools would be useless with a cnc. It’s just a shame alister that you have chosen a diy cnc rather than an industrial one but hopefully you can learn on that and move on the bigger and better things, edgebander is a must for the new workshop if you can afford one in the future definitely have plans for one in the future if you can. Good luck with it all with the workshop it’s very tough to make money in this game when the overheads are not kept affordable, it is fairly easy when times are good but when you hit harder times then it’s easy to go out of business , on the other hand you can’t build a decent business in what we do without a proper workshop.
@Alastair_Freebird
@Alastair_Freebird 4 жыл бұрын
RJS Carpenters and Decorators interesting point that the CNC makes some processes redundant. I have actually held back from committing to that CNC, until I see one made and running. I still think it could be worth it for the deal price he is offering me but because we are relocating the business near to our CNC subcontract manufacture I am considering using them a little longer then getting a higher spec CNC machine.

Great video, while I have the Rafix (Häfele system) as well as the Domino, the Lamello P2 Zeta Clamex and Tenso are the winner for knockdowns. Confirmat screws are also a great system.
@Alastair_Freebird
@Alastair_Freebird Жыл бұрын
We use a lot of confirmat screws! Now that we have a flatbed CNC we drill the 5mm diameter through-holes through the bookcase sides witht eh cnc, to line up with edge holes drilled using 4mm drills in the Mafell Duo Doweller in the ends of shelves. We also use Cabineo fixings, which are great because the whole joint is prepared as face machining holes on the cnc. However we actually still often find it quicker to use our old method of assembling by hand using our 3D assembly square, direct drilling using the stepped confirmat drill bit, and screwing in place

Great insight from Derek and your discussion. Lots to learn from you both. I was curious as to how he uses the hot melt Ryobi tool. Does he use it to apply scribe strips permanently or with another adhesive? Or just for temporary hold of pieces. Would you trust hot melt glue for scribe strips?
@Alastair_Freebird
@Alastair_Freebird 4 жыл бұрын
john gibson I’m not sure what he likes it for but I’m pretty certain it wouldn’t be for permanent fixing! I know some people use it for creating templates (for an alcove countertop for example) made up of thin strips of hardboard quickly glued together at corners
