To celebrate the launch of critically acclaimed video game DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION, Square Enix has commissioned filmmaker Rob Spence aka Eyeborg (a self proclaimed cyborg who lost an eye replaced it with a wireless video camera) to investigate prosthetics, cybernetics and human augmentation.

I'm graduating with a BS in neurobiology the end of this semester. As ridiculous as it sounds, Deus Ex Human Revolution peaked my interest in neural/prosthetic interfacing so much that I am actually considering focusing on that once my graduate work is done.

For those with major wounds, cybernetics are totally OK. For people wanting to upgrade because they think it's better, that's nuts, but I don;t think it's medically unethical. For your job or advertising companies to push that you upgrade, irregardless of Dues Ex anti-rejection drug scenario, That's utterly unethical. Personally I preferred Starwars take on the subject. Sort of a 'Meh, they're useful' approach. I'd say the same thing for nano mechanical and genetic augs, both of which I'd say are far superior to Mechanical augs like Dues Ex.

A kid just figured out how to reduce the price of a bionic arm from like $40,000 to about $2000. A kid. That's how much it costs HIM to make one. A company using his methods could make them for even less. As technology develops it gets smaller, better, faster, and cheaper almost exponentially. It's only a matter of time.

I really like that a game company puts focus, time, money and effort into a documentary around real social subjects; Replacing lost limbs with artificial limbs. Just because their main character is a cyborg and are already deep into "replacing your limbs"-part.

I was thinking a lot about prosthetic arms last weekend when I played a lot with the game. You need a torso that can withstand the force that goes through on your body. That must be some firm stuff, so it must be heavy. So you need sturdy legs to take the burden. So it's not an easy task. But I hope it will be available in the future! Great video.

The part of this entire emerging field of study that I find most interesting isn't just the amazing things future prosthesis will be capable of, but the actual materials that will be used and how they'll mitigate the immune response. I understand that this is an issue in the game (still trying to get my hands on it)? If I could afford to go back to college, that would be the field I would go into personally. Finding optimal materials for both function and host acceptance.

In the game, the HUD is described as a retinal enhancement which means the HUD is actually in his eyeballs. Not sure how he's able to focus on it and the world around him at the same time, maybe the signals of the HUD are sent straight into his optical nerves in stead of being projected into his field of vision. Seems like the optimal solution since the HUD would then follow his vision even when turning his eyes in their sockets.

I knew we had come a long way in prosthetic innovations but I did not know it was this far. When you see this video and compare to to the base prosthetics in Deus Ex, you can really see similarities between them. This is really interesting technology. Given, I wouldn't intentionally replace my fully functional body parts but, if I lost one, this video helps me feel like I have options. Thanks for this video. It really is inspiring.

One limiting factor in the power of these prosthetics, in being stronger than our natural limbs, is, I think, the possibility of having a prosthetic ripping itself from the flesh. So they'd either have to be severely throttled, or the person would have to opt for a full synthetic chassis, or perhaps some sort of exoskeleton.

Thank you for replying. There are many scientists and experts in this field that say the prosthetic/robotic limbs of deus ex are very likely to exist by the year 2027, some say even sooner like Hugh Herr. But they are talking about the limbs. Not the other crazy stuff like upgrades or augmented weaponry or destroying a wall with your hand. The technology that human beings produce is always quicker to evolve than we expect

Have a look at "Targeted Muscle Re-innveration (TMR) for Advanced Prosthetic Control" on youtube. That's a VERY crude version of the prosthetic Jensen has for his arm (connected to the nerves in the arm etc and giving a sense of touch). 2027...(setting for Deus EX:HR) seems a fairly good ballpark for the tech.
