In this video, we look at the progression or "devolution" of Japan's Type 99 rifle from 1940 through 1945. We begin with the original long rifle manufactured by the Nagoya Arsenal and Toyo Kogyo factory, and then get into the various short rifles. We wrap things up with a look at several Substitute Type 99s or "last ditch Arisakas.'
This is a general overview, so for more detailed information, please checkout our Japanese Firearms playlist.
Featured Nagoya rifles include from Series 1, 6, 7, & 10.
From Kokura we have Series 24 & 25.
From Toyo Kogyo Series 30 & 35.
We have an early & late example from Tokyo Juki Kogyo Series 27.
Finally, a "Jinsen Special" from Series 40.
Also we discuss Izawa Jyuko & Howa Jyuko from Series 9, and the very rare Mukden Arsenal Series 45.

Nice video, as always. I just picked up a late war Concentric Circle Kokura Type 99. Only difference from your 25th series is the lack of dust cover grooves on mine. Your 27th series rope hole is one of the nicest I've seen. Most of that series I've run across have the chatter marks on the stock sanded off. The example I own falls into that category, but I picked it up for $250 at a show last year. Your other TJK with the reused early stock is also a variant I hope to pick up soon. Saw one at a show I was set up at in January, but it was both sanded and mismatched, which was too bad.

I bought a last ditch Arisaka at a very bargain price. In great shape but reduced price because "duffel cut". My father had a music shop that specialized in repair. I worked with and became maybe proficient at wood repair. A tuned guitar has to withstand 1500 pounds at the neck body position due to string pressure. So, I watched youtube vids and consulted other sources and so joined the two main stock pieces pretty much professionally. Good job! Then I found out that many last ditch rifles had a three piece stock as mine did.......sigh But it's a great "repair" and a lesson in research first, research first...........
@rr-sp5ii
@rr-sp5ii Ай бұрын
Yes the duffel cut is pretty much a myth and these rifles were made this way. GI going home on ships were not allowed to take their rifles with them in their duffle bags. All the rifles were stored in the hold and given to the GI once he disinbarked in the US. Some boat captains had the bolts removed for safety reasons and so this is why we see so many mis matched bolts as random ones were put back on.

Just Picked up an Intact Mum (Minor Molestation on the top right corner) 32nd Series Type 99 from Kokura Arsenal subcontracted to Toyo Kogyo Arsenal dated to about 1943. I'm putting a Monopod on it along with a dust cover and cleaning rod it was missing (I researched and found the 32nd series was the last series from this arsenal that included the dust cover and monopod). The soldier that this rifle was issued to put a ring style sling mount and nailed it to his rifle. I'm keeping it that way. Also found the same day a J.P. Sauer Karabiner 98k Dated 1937 with Weimar Republic Marks instead of the Parteisadler. The stock is a bit of a mess and needs refinishing as the coating is peeling off, but it is an early stock with a flat buttplate. They both came with their respective bayonet and 4 stripper clips for their respective ammo.

my navy t99 arisaka looks like the first and third rifles you showed in your video. mine is a long rifle. has a navy anchor mum on the receiver with numbers 064 with a S stamp before the numbers. has no pod. looks like a t38 only difference is 1 gas hole in the receiver and the peep sight and anti aircraft sight. been searching for the rifle like mine, but haven't found anything. i did buy a box of 20 rounds. of 7.7x58 for 35 bucks. it shoots well. my cleaning rod doesn't have a release button. just pull it out,, its a tight fit. the mag release is just like the t38, right in front of the trigger. the rifle is almost 5 feet long and weights around 9 to 10 pounds. but plate is a thin piece of steel. has a brand writing on the right side of the stock, which ppl automatically said it's a training rifle. well there is no cast iron parts and barrel is rifled. i did learn that the Japanese navy did convert training rifles over to shoot live ammo. could be a possibility of what i have. all numbers match except dust cover because i bought 1 to put on it since it was missing.

I apologize for sounding dumb, but I just wanted to verify whether or not the Type 99 featured a chrome-lined bore AND chamber. Came across a Kokura Series 21 (late production) not too long ago and got the chance to shine a light down the bore, needless to say I was initially surprised by how shiny the chamber looked. Now I've known about the earlier models having chrome-lined bores but I couldn't find anything about whether or not that also applied to the chamber. I would appreciate any incite you may have on the matter😊

I have an Arisaka rifle that says type 38 on top (my Japanese friend translated for me) but the muzzle inner diameter is 7.72 mm. 300 SAV is stamped on the side of the barrel but the bullets tumble through the air when shooting that cartridge. What do I have? Is it possible to have a type 99 barrel mated to a type 38 receiver?

I know this is a older video but at 9:05 you said the dust covers were gone but don’t those lines in the receiver mean they had a dust cover?
@curiousentertainment3008
@curiousentertainment3008 3 жыл бұрын
It’s because they were put together from parts already made that had the grooves just like how a few early svt-40’s have scope rails but no notch for the scope.
@Verdha603
@Verdha603 2 жыл бұрын
Dust cover grooves stayed on receivers for longer because removing them would have required them to pause producing receivers to adjust the machining process for it, so a significant number of Arisaka’s were produced with dust cover grooves but without an actual dust cover to minimize breaks in production.

Could be pieced together post war but the Japanese were so desperate they also pieced together rifles at the factories out of partially destroyed guns and rejected parts, like the Russians reusing hex receivers in WW2 or P38 pistols being made out of older and new parts in 1945
@commwell8738
@commwell8738 Жыл бұрын
@@brasstard7.627 I thought of that but it still retaines the chrysanthemum and was a Marine war trophy. He claimed it was taken mid war and the factory stamp on it supports that as well. I think it was early last ditch maybe.
