Finally got my electric bike finished over the winter. Quick video showing some of the upgrades and a quick spin around our street.
Range is about 30 miles with all 6 packs. Top speed is a good 28mph. Possibly more if I reduce my rear gear.

Thanks everyone for kind words! Not sure how it happened but the 60 to 12 volt step down decided to output 60v instead... frying the headlights, tail lights, and letting the smoke out of the radio. Im working on a redesign to delete my previous goofy 6 10A breakers and go with an official 60v 25A breaker. Im also adding a fuse to all 12v components. Also switching to a self contained radio that just uses a usb stick for mp3 instead of an external mp3 player. I also found a usb programer for the bafung so hopefully I can have an official battery cutoff at 48v (3.2v/cell) and set the main battery voltage to more accurately reflect true battery charge status, which means i could delete my goofy voltage gauges. Plus there is a rumor that my 25A motor is really only outputting 20A so i might get a power boost soon. Ill try and get a video up expaining the new wireing configuration.
@Blair88mph
@Blair88mph 8 жыл бұрын
Scott Cook Yea there are multiple ways to do the 12v. I just didnt want a 7th battery. Using a single 60 to 12v step down is actually equally simple in my book. If I add another battery I would need a mount, and a gauge for that battery and what if it dies? do I sub it out with my bike sets? Do I swap? It seems better to me to have one set of 6 and whatever that power is, is what I have instead of well I have this much for this and that much for that. I have room in the saddle bags but I wanted nothing in them in case I wanted to go without saddle bags. Its true that under load the drop could be uneven per pack but I really havent seen that. Its like 0.3v off however after each ride each pack goes right back on its own charger bringing it back to full. If I run only 3 packs at 25A thats 8A per pack which is average for a dewalt power tool. I measured a drill with a hard core drill bit and it gave a reading of 7A. When I double up the packs (all 6) (they are wired cell to cell not just 0v and +20v) and so my load is more like 4A per pack. Walk in the park for a pack. This is much better as a drill you use a bit, put down, back and forth. An electric bike is using energy at a more continuous rate which can cause a pack to overheat.

You need a transformer to properly step the voltage down to 12 volts. You might try using a 120v AC to 12v DC, if you got one laying around. You could shell out the bucks for one specific for the task or make your own. Its just coiling input and output wires around a square magnet (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/Single-phase_transformer). Suggest using a circuit tester to reveal the output voltage and amperage, before hooking it up to anything of value. Its not just the voltage that should concern you. The potential, amperage, off by a factor of 10 can easily fry low voltage items.

I very much like the styling. It looks a bit like vintage Harley, the way you have everything setup. The helmet adds to the motif. The features like the lights, dials, radio and heated grips and heated outfit really ad value. Where did you get all these ideas? Any thoughts about selling your idea or making a child's version. A fake motorcycle exhaust noise could be a great feature that kids would like for a child's version. A noise maker would also provide added safety for children, to constantly let drivers know their whereabouts like the beeping a truck makes when it backs up. The problem with electric bike, unlike the gas driven conversion you had earlier, is they can be too quiet, and sneak up on or under you. Have you given any thought about going into production and working with a partner? I could help. I know the law, how to file patents, and how to get crowd funding; and, I have a corporation to protect the investment, although I am not 100% comfortable with the reliability, safety, and performance of your unit with the the lights shorting out, and the fact that 60v could take you up to 35 mph. To be legal for bike lanes in most US states, it would have to be governed below 20 mph, or you would have to have a license, get it tagged, and have insurance for it.

Guy.... I don't know where you live but you could selling all kinds of these things in California! What you have done here that has eluded so many others is make an ebike cool. The rotary layout of the batteries from the crank centerline to epitomize a "Harley" look was very insightful. Find a way to get exposure and your gonna have to open an assembly line. Way to go buddy!

Wow! It looks better than any professionally made bike. A lot of details. I wonder where you did get all that stuff, like the chromed ribs on the battery or the old fashioned tail light. Very nice work. I think it would be a commercial success.
@Blair88mph
@Blair88mph 7 жыл бұрын
The chrome on the batteries is 3mm stick on chrome trim for cars. The tail light is a reproduction 1932 (passenger side) ford tail light which I got the led version. It comes in chrome so I left the outside chrome and powder coated the base gloss black. The bike I got on a bike website, the bafung motor I got from some site in japan I think, and then everything else I got on ebay.

Nice job with a lot of love to detail! It takes a lot of time imaging how solve a problem f.ex. the chrome trim. Ex post it's easy but in the moment you must have the idea and the place where to get it. The estethical result is very good because everything matches. I don't know hoy it is to ride, probably also a nice quality.

That's really nice. Very good looks - looks like quality build! One suggestion: flip the batteries over so that gravity keeps them in the interface jack. It you go over cobblestones or rough roads, I'd imagine the batteries could come loose. (it's why in aerospace, bolts are usually inserted from above rather than with the nut end on top)
