DeWALT 40V MAX Lithium Ion battery-operated outdoor tools hit the market with a promise to provide the power, runtime and durability for professional use. DeWALT even claims that they will perform as well as gas units. The battery operated outdoor tools have become very popular as they become more refined. Couple that with the fact that many people do not like to do the necessary maintenance required on a small gas motor. Currently DeWALT offers the Brushless String Trimmer with 4Ah battery or with a 6Ah extreme run time (XR) option for 50% more battery capacity. Our review is with the 6Ah battery.

I have one of these, and you forgot one of the most important things when considering this unit for a gas weedeater replacement - When you pull it out in the spring, IT WILL START! No muss, no worrying about gas. It just works.

*My friend is in our late 60"s🌿 **allabout.wiki/DEWALT** and we are huge DEWALT fans and have been for several years. We have more than DEWALT tools. This weed eater was just what we needed. I opened the box at **2:30** and by **3:10** I was trimming weeds and I am not handy. I trimmed for nearly an hour on the same small battery. We had a larger model and gave it to our son-in-law because it was just getting too heavy for us. This has very balanced weight and we love it.*

Just wanted to pass along my appreciation for a nicely detailed video. The presentation was very well paced, easy to comprehend and annotated well. Minor suggestion, I would have liked to seen a picture of the "upgraded string" mentioned in the video and maybe some specific outside temperatures the device was tested in. Adding the operational videos in between speech points was Awesome! Great Review.

Michael Maj Test temps were between 60 and 80 degrees F. I used the string trimmer weekly for a month to collect data. The upgraded string can be just about any brand, it just has to be smooth. The one I would recommend I the easiest one to find at your hardware store.

I'm a golf course superintendent and I bought 1 of these to try as we own the chainsaw and 3 blowers in the 40 volt line. Love all of them except this weed eater. A greens keeper will need about 6-7 batteries to keep him going on a golf setting. Great unit though, he loved it, light weight, string feed was excellent, lots of power, quiet, could use it closer to golfers and no one seemed to notice the noise. I may purchase the 7.5ah battery, but not for a commercial setting in using it 8 hours all day.

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but can the head of this support things other than line? Like solid blades? My property is primarily woods (on a steep angle), with small brush and ivy i level out periodically. Would like something cordless (as my old cheapo b&d corded model is not up to the task) but also want the flexibility of being able to use different "attachments" for thicker stuff (half inch max) if that makes sense. Any advice? Thanks!

I have this unit, and use it pretty hard on my 40 acres, doing the trim and small cleanups. Battery life, as stated is good. cuts well, line bumps out consitantly, when it is operating, I like it quite a bit. HOWEVER, as it gets worn, it becomes increasingly difficult to remove the spool to reload it with string. I am now using screwdrivers to try and pry it off (and yes, I understand how to lock and unlock it). and getting started on winding on new string, the holes they provide are way to large, and not deep enough,m and have weird angles, so it's almost impossible to get the first couple of turns of string onto the spool without the string popping out of the hole. I have resorted to jamming small shims of plastic (those gum toothpicks cut down to size work well) in to the holes to keep the string in place while I get it wrapped up. I will not buy this design again when the time comes!

The shaft looks like it has a lot of flex. How does the thickness/quality of metal on the shaft compare to say a stihl or husky?
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 6 жыл бұрын
The shaft does flex and we go over that in the video. We do not see that kind of flex in any other brand. When in use, we do not notice the flex, but when moving it around or storage we do notice it. Stihl wont have that flex. even EGO with the carbon fiber shaft does not have that flex.

Just put some electrical tape around that safety paddle. Or maybe get a Velcro strap you can put on it. I have a few string trimmers. One is a Stihl FS 55 with the bicycle handles. I use it to cut everything down on the other side of my road ditch. I have run though a tank of gas in it in one run doing the yard sometimes. But that is a big trim. I should add that for my FS 55 I have a shoulder strap for it. You'd have to be King Kong to hold that bear up and use it. But if you think that battery really weighs on your electric unit you have you should get a strap on for it.

Some are rated for it and some are not. The Dewalt, ECHO, Milwaukee and most are not. The EGO Powerhead unit is the only one I know you can off the top of my head. The dedicated string trimmers from EGO are not rated either.

@WorkshopAddict

MTD makes most of the small Cub Cadet stuff, but I do not know if they make string trimmers. When I think long term, I think 10 years. There will be a large technology swing in that time. I would probably buy the EGO 56-volt Powerhead or the new EGO carbon fiber auto-wind string trimmer and know that I had a 5-year warranty. That gets me covered for 5 yers and then I would look at the technology IF you were wanting something else. A good Stihl gas powered trimmer will cost twice what the EGO will cost.

We have done reviews on the Stihl and Dewalt. There are differences and I go over them in each video. But the Milwaukee M18 stuff will not compete with the 40 or 36 volt tools. They simply cannot supply the same power and runtime. We are excited to test them!

Budget 40V/Standard 20V = 10 cells 56V = 14 cells M18 HD = 15 cells Good 40V = 20 - 30 cells
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 8 жыл бұрын
+CarrionAndAsh the number of cells will depend on voltage, like you noted, but also if they are 1p, 2p,3p ect.... they stack to get more amp hours and spread the load. Power will still come from an equation giving you watt hours.

I'm not a huge fan of the motor being above the cutting head - I prefer the way Milwaukee do their multi-attachment trimmer/saw unit, with the motor at the back.... it just seems like the motor life will be shorter when the cooling intakes are constantly blocked by grass and debris
