Sony has their swivel head that turns the light to be vertically situated over the subject when shooting that way. The only issue is they’re rather expensive and you’re stuck with Sony lights if you’re running it off camera with multiple other strobes or speedlights.

If you use Sony camera with Sony flash, you can rotate the head of flash into vertical mode. This is the advantage of Sony flash, but it’s too expensive.

Or just point your flash upwards with a bounce card/flash modifier attached so when you tilt your camera you just adjust your flash head up so your flash stays above your lens at a slight angle from one side. Literally takes one second to adjust it.

Yeah but the shadow looks dope and I would assume it also depends how much distance you have between the subject and a wall

Just don’t shoot on-camera flash at all. Use a trigger and shoot with a softbox off 45° to the camera and about 45° up. Mush cleaner light and way more dramatic. On-camera flash looks like a photo lit with a xerox machine.

Rather an expensive solution this is. Simply cover the front facing side of the flash and let it bounce from the roof or bright surface from the sides instead. If your photos come dark, lower shutter to 80, raise ISO to 2500 or 3000. No shadows. I am a club photographer, and this works for me.

Good to know! I really like the direct flash look and found this to be a good solution. I know everyone’s relationship with money is different but when it comes to tools for a trade doing things to save money in short term end up costing much more in the long term.

One of the most common comments. Swiveling your flash head to point at the ceiling only works a) if the ceiling is not high and b) if it’s white or light colored. Thanks for your comment!

@@JesseDeyoung Yes I agree, many ceilings in event spaces have rebar support beams or some type of beam and almost no light up there so it is nothing but a black hole, and some ceilings are painted black. I sometimes use the Rogue flash bender which mounts to the flash with strong velcro, they offer different models that work well.

Why would i use cord, when there is SB-910 and flash head can rotate
@JesseDeyoung
@JesseDeyoung Жыл бұрын
Because rotating the flash head only works if you have something to bounce your light off of. By using the cord you get your light source above your lens in any environment. Good question :)

@@JesseDeyoung Yes, it is true but that is too much job and it is painful to do, especially when you are doing wedding in restaurants. I have D5 and with 1/100 shutter i can go with ISO of 10k - 15k, without losing quality, for other occasions I have 3 SB-910 and it is doing fantastic job, but it was interesting to see cord flashlight i never worked with that type of flashlight
