OK, there are many comments that it is dangerous to drive with the axle nut removed. THIS MAY BE TRUE. I am just stating what has worked for me in the past when you have a 'hard to diagnose' hub bearing. Now if your hub bearing is completely wiped out, it should be easy to find without having to remove the axle nut or driving without it. For me, most of the time, I was able to diagnose the bad hub bearing simply by jacking up the front end and attempting to 'lift' the wheel either up and down or in and out. Doing so usually will reveal the 'play' in the bad bearing. However, on 3 occasions, I had a bad bearing that had no play using the standard method. The first revealed itself after removal of the axle nut and using the procedure I just described. The second and third did not have any play and my only option was to give it a quick drive, nothing more than a half mile or so, and nothing high speed. I did this method without incident and was able to diagnose the bad bearing. I understand that ,many feel this is unsafe, therefore I am not telling anyone to do it, just letting you know what my experience has been. Proceed at you own risk using the method you feel most comfortable with. After reading the comments, I will try to exhaust all options before trying this method again. It is my opinion, the reason why I was able to do this without any unwanted failure, was that the bearing was still 'tight' and in good enough condition other than making the rotational groan. In both instances there was little to no play in the bad bearing.

I once had a half shaft fail, and I didn't give any serious thought to the axle nut, it was just easier to leave the outside end attached for my emergency removal to get it home. It was a year or so later before I actually got around to replacing the shaft to pull down a tree with 4WD.

But could you explain to me why running the axle nut off even matters with the whole shaft out?? The axle nut holds the shaft. Shaft not there.... Hub attaches to knuckle, tire attached to hub...😒

That is what a mechanic said to me I had a new bearing for him to replace. "I do not think this bearing is bad" there is no play in it. Now what you found out should be the way the mechanic shows you it is bad. Great video thanks! My right front has been making that noise it start around 40 mph now it is like a knocking sound around 20 mph.

Hub bearing are normally stacked angular contact bearings with joined outter races but seperate inner races. Angular contact bearing are designed for side lodes, unlike ball bearings which are not. The reason why you can feel the play with the axle nut removed is that the inner races are no longer under tension.

Man I have this EXACT same issue in my 04 suburban. Same noise, same symptom I turn right and the noise goes away and I’ve always been told that means it’s the wheel bearings that’s being unloaded so I replaced the passenger one like you did. No change. Luckily I decided to just do both anyway and ordered a driver side so hopefully that fixes my issue.

What an excellent video; learned a few things here,you covered everything (even the first error...). 1: loosen the big nut, five or 6 turns,back off the shaft, and *then* shake the wheel to see if it is loose, no need to remove the axle shaft at first. 2: i am quite sure that the axle shaft can never make the rumble noise a bad bearing makes; CV joint noises are totally different ones; 3: if you don't do the nr. 1, it is still a great idea to remove the axle shaft, then spin the wheel , it could be the bearing inside the diff. making the noise.

You we’re a lucky man. I pulled both axel shafts as I was waiting for a replacement front diff due to excessive hum. Did a very short test drive a few blocks and heard noise from front end . Pulled over and to my surprise both hub assemblies were pulling out of the hub, only thing stopping it was the break rotors. Thank god I was not on the road at Highway speed. Could have been very bad accident for me or other people. Ended up putting in large bolts and washers to hold the hub assembly’s in place. Lesson learned how not to do things. I was very lucky indeed.
@AxlesGarage
@AxlesGarage 3 жыл бұрын
I usually drive it just a few blocks for diagnosis, never had an issue. That's why there is a warning in the description and pinned comment. Usually if what you describe happens, the hub bearing where loose and shot pretty bad and you should be able to diagnose it without driving.

My steering didn't start wobbling when accelerating until I hit a big Ol Pothole about 10 inches deep and the whole front end bottomed out, like a big bang. I've got new tires less than a year old, been balanced twice at walmart. I just can't figure it out. Update It was a bad cv axle. But I replaced everything but the struts.
@AxlesGarage
@AxlesGarage 5 жыл бұрын
First I would start by rotating the tires and see if anything changes, that would rule out a bent wheel or out of balance tire. If nothing changes after that, have a 'good' alignment shop check the front end and align to factory spec, then see where you stand from there. Thanks for watching.
@garypowell4565
@garypowell4565 5 жыл бұрын
@@AxlesGarageThanks, I did the front to back rotation already, and it helped, but would still do it when accelerating some. I'm thinking I might have messed up the belts one or both tires, cause I hit pretty hard. Plus, when I did have the tires rotated a few months ago, there was one tire that had a nail in the shoulder of the tire, and the tire guy at walmart wouldn't fix it, because it was to close to the side, so I told him I would fix it, and I plugged it, and I'm thinking that I may have messed the tire's belts up, doing it so close to the side, and then hitting that pothole might have done her in. I'm gonna put the front of the car on jack stands, start the engine and let the tires roll and get under and see if I can see anything bent out of shape, or loose. Thanks again!

My 02 Escalade AWD makes the same kind of noise but only under a load. Once I let off the gas it stops. Or if I'm cruising at 75MPH its not as noticeable. I think it's the front Differential. When I changed the fluid it had a lot of metal in it. Any other Ideas?
@AxlesGarage
@AxlesGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Metal in diff fluid may be normal wear if it has not been changed, however a sound like that under load only would direct my curiosity more to diff, trans, or even as simple as U-joints on a driveshaft. Thanks for watching.
@roberthein2156
@roberthein2156 5 жыл бұрын
Diff. had metal ? Spin the wheels ,look at the teeth gears, worn? But look inside wheels, for grease spinning out of hubs, check booths on CV's ,ripes. If front axle is bad, trade it or look for another pumpkin (same gears). Last, if you have a 4×4, all tires the same size? This alone can throw off the speed of turning the front and back axles, causing improper gear wear.

I'm having a clicking while driving. The click is constant depending on the speed. Also A few weeks ago it started out as a pop when turning, the. I couldn't turn my wheel left any more when stopped. When driving I can turn fine, but turning left still pops at low speeds. With the car jacked up, if I turn the driver wheel left, and spin it backwards, the tire locks up and won't spin anymore. If I spin it straight it spins fine. Any ideas? 04 suburban 4x4. 200k miles. All stock but shocks and a motor

A popping sound while turning USUALLY would indicate a CV axle. They are fairly cheap and easy to do. Standard Replacement about $60: amzn.to/3I0yPzC and for a few bucks more you can get the HD version: amzn.to/3I9otO3

I can’t comment on GM trucks, but doing this on a FWD or AWD Volvo car (former ASE certified master mechanic)is going to result in a lot of play that would be there in a new bearing… not to mention it could come apart (not that you could do this on a FWD car… but you get my point)….. also 𝒖𝒔𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 on the GM trucks of this era, youd get either erratic ABS function (like it going off when your not skidding, and stopping normally), or would have a ABS light on and a code for the side with the bad bearing. Another good help for diagnosing front wheel bearings is the groan/noise will get louder for the opposite side when turning at a decent speed (like >25 mph). Hope that helps.

It usually it a wheel bearing. I do know though that inside each end of your CV axle. There are ball bearings that rotate. If the boots get cut and dry up of grease. You can hear a rubbing sound cause those bearings are running dry too. In fact even with a wheel hub those bearings are sealed too. They eventually do run out of grease and once they do you start hearing noises.

It has been my experience that if you can feel it in the steering wheel, it is more likely to be a suspension part or steering shaft issue. Loosen Axle nut to check for play in wheel bearing, if no play. replace axle nut and start checking suspension parts. Z71 are notorious for Idler and Pittman arm issues.

That's a creative idea, makes one think about what actually holds a wheel on. Even loosening the axle nut then rechecking for movement while on the stands is likely all one needs. I'll have to try that to get a feel for what is normal. The bearing is still bolted into the knuckle and the wheel, but as you know the wheel bearing can come apart with the extra forces of a moving vehicle, similar to how it may explode with a slide hammer. In the past I've rarely had difficulty diagnosing a bad axle, usually those are obvious at slow speed. But even deciding which wheel bearing is involved can be a challenge.
@AxlesGarage
@AxlesGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, can be dangerous to drive without the Axle nut. I've done it several times, but never realized the risk. However, removing the Axle nut to feel for play in the bearing has proved to be very useful.

If your wheel fell off in a half mile, you didn't need to remove the nut to diagnose. It was most definitely loose to begin with. I did a diagnostic test drive for about 3/4 mile with no issues.
