Back in September of last lear (2017) flew over to the south of France to represent Great Britain at the World Archery 3D champion ships. Lets just say it didn't go great... Not terrible, but not how I'd planned it.
In this video I talk a little about what happened, how I felt and what’s next for Grizzly Jim.

I know the feeling, I was in a big traditional shoot and me and my friends that were shooting together and joking around a lot and singing songs and such. The group behind us the lead guy was a Bowyer of a very famous very nice bow company came over and told us that some of us are serious archers here and we would appreciate complete silence. My buddy looked at him and said this isn't golf. Well when it was all said and done we were having a great time and I was surprised to find out that I had won my class which was traditional class which is the biggest class. They also have Longbow class with wooden arrows and primitive class with self bows. We had a great time and I brought home the trophy. First rule is you must have fun. Keep shooting for enjoyment and making great videos👍

You qualified and shot at the world championships! Nothing to beat yourself up about. I used to shoot longbow (gap) years ago. Some months ago I stumbled across your vids & because of your enthusiasm, I've got back into it, with a 40lb slick stick, instinctive, much more enjoyable than gap, just feels rights, and I got my 2 kids into it as well, (my 6year old might be giving you a run for your money one day..) :) Keep up the good work Jim, you're a great ambassador for the sport.

Instinctive shooting is one of the most psychologically vulnerable skill-based activities you can get into, in my opinion. We've all experienced these rough spans and it's very easy to constantly second guess having purposefully taken the hardest road. One of the most frustrating things is knowing how much time has gone into dedication to the craft, then watching the results veer off course. At the same time, once you spend enough time doing something, it's natural to want to compare yourself to others. I always say that beginner archers and archers who seldom shoot are often more accurate than they should be simply because the psychology is on their side. A bad shot is expected and makes sense, while a good shot is a huge confidence and psychological boost. Once you start taking archery seriously you start constantly messing with form and adjusting equipment and get worse before you get better. In the end, anyone who loves the bow knows that no matter how bad things go, we could never quit the life, so we can all take comfort in the inevitability of bouncing back.

I know how you feel. In my first indoor target competition I entered I shot a whopping 148 in a 450 in 2014). Being a 3D guy, I just brought that bow and arrows, and shot like on a 3D course. rude awakening to say the least. It is a totally different creature. Being stubborn, I refuse to switch my bows, but focused on my shot cycle and arrows, last year (2017) I shot a 334. Just seeing what it is about and how it can affect you is the biggest part of the learning curve. You will get better, I know that. Good stuff and keep your chin up. You did fine, if someone one does judge you from it, then they are not worth having as a friend. Just sayin'

That’s the problem with turning a hobby into a competition. It becomes a job and you have to commit to it like a job or else there is no point. I understand exactly what you are saying, and believe if you give it another go you’ll be much more mentally prepared. Personally, I hope you keep competing because archery needs more laidback back ppl like you, that make it look as much fun as it is!

Mate i loved your video. and i personally couldn't care less that you didn't finish first during this competition because you are an amazing archer and you embody what archery is about. it is not about scoring points or being better than the guy next to you. it is about enjoying that moment when you look at something and you put put your arrow straight through it... when you are alone in the woods and you make one with your bow. Thank you for making all those videos and inspiring a new generation of instinctive archers.

Congratulations. I have been in tournament's myself and shot with the same type of people who are pro tournament archers and did well myself, but I couldn't find a true instinctive archer in the whole group. I think you are better than you give yourself credit for, your a true instinctive archer. The tournament shooters are just that, that's all they practice for. Don't worry about winning or losing in a tournament just have fun that's what archery is all about. Love your video's and have enjoyed them all. Shoot straight my friend and enjoy yourself I hope grizzly strings is a big success for you and your family. God Bless.

Jim, I couldn’t agree more with everything you’ve said, same thing happened to me in the IBO worlds two years ago, I honestly believe I was the only instinctive shooter there and managed to make it to the top 16 on day three then just lost it on the final day from exhaustion and fatigue but I wouldn’t trade my shooting style for anything and just had the most successful hunting season of my career! Thanks for your inspiration brother you’re one of the reasons I started my Instinctive Addiction Archery channel and I’m looking forward to having some fun this 3D season, thanks again God Bless!

I know that exact feeling Jim. I am at the point where my tournament shooting has taken away my confidence in hunting. It's an awful feeling to know your a good shot and then you go to a competition and feel the anxiety of target panic and it destroys your worthiness of shooting a traditional bow or even going hunting with it. I'm still shooting competitively and I'm determined not to let this whip me! Good luck Jim and don't give up on the competitive side!

I enjoyed watching this and listening to you ventilate and getting this of your chest. Don't feel bad because I think you inspire people, a lot of people, by the way you shoot and not how (well) you shoot! By the way you eat, sleep and breath trad archery. By the way you put the finger on having fun, camaradery, enjoying nature and the outdoors! By the way you share your knowledge to everyone without asking anything in return. All of this is so more important than a ranking on a list! And for this we don't want or need to hear excuses! So carry on the way you were doing, what you do best and to return a favor we'll keep supporting you and looking forward to every new post, vid, message,... Wish you all the best buddy!

I believe every archer goes through the same thing Jim. When it occurs I think that the best advice is to loose a few dozen arrows at 10m and concentrate on your form. I think it can be attributed to performing under duress and other people's expectations of you. Remember, it's just you against the target. Btw, thanks for the MAC arrows, the 500 spine one's are performing very well.Cheers.

Jim I fully understand how you felt after France. I had the same feelings of failure. I went in expecting to perform much better than I did. I was in 17th place after the first day and expected to move up the second day. However the best laid plans often go awry. Total failure second day. I felt like you that I had let myself, my team, my country and those that supported me down. It took me a year to overcome these feelings. I now realize that I WAS there, I represented my country. Most of all I met many awesome people. Meeting you on the streets of Avignon was a great experience. I am in process now of building a bow to try to qualify for this year's tournament. I look forward to seeing you at Lac La Biche. Best wishes- Big Sexy

Thanks for the vid Jim. It’s so true that shooting instinctively for comps is not the way to go. The comp pressure throws off your instinct. Gapping and process shooting are much more suited. I shoot by switching between instinctive within 20yds and gap on riser beyond. Joel turners process is a must as well.

hi, i think you know all the guys on the 3D place and sometimes i listen their online advices for my personal technical evolution (David Jackson, Robin Gardeur) i starrted classical bow in november 2021 but my goal was to learn traditionnal bow, so i took it as a solid base, i tried barebow (3 months) but returned to mediterranean for more precision as i have progressed very much faster as others in my group the coach convinced me to make competitions, use a more powerfull bow, etc...after 3 indoor competitions i felt very stressed, always much pain in the shoulders, angry... at the beginning it wasn't my goal (i'm 54 !) and now i only train with precision on target (40 cm at 15 and 30 meters) to go in 3D parcours, just for the pleasure to be in the woods, enjoying like a kid, no more competitions !!!

But this is also like their 3 championship run and ya they are gappers, but them most important thing I've noticed with them is they try not to take it to seriously. So hope to see you at Lac La Biche I'll hoping to be doing some kind of grunt work with targets. But ya get out there shoot , record, post and repeat. Love your vid and your product reviews . And like my Dad used to say " anyone can make a mistake, but it's a damn fool makes the same one twice" so here's to a new set of screw ups, live , learn and move on.

I recently subscribed and I know my comment is a year too late. Anyway, Jim commiserations can sound a little banal, so just carry on loving your archery and if you do decide to compete again: The best of British luck. Flaxen Saxon

I didnt go to a single practice-session at my club last year. Why? They focus so heavily on olympic style, recuve and compound, and always pushing for results and competition. I go there during summer on off times to shoot alone outside. To see someone like you, a great archer, who shoots because you love it, even go to a world championship is inspiring. It shows me that I can become good without being forced in to competitions. Youre an inspiration, my friend!

Did you fail at the Worlds 3Ds? No sir, you didn't. You qualified, went over to France, did your best - and learned a "if it doesn't kill you - it makes you stronger" lesson. It may take some time to realize it (as in your case) - but obviously you grew stronger by that experience. Glad that you are back full steam ahead in archery - can't wait for all the videos to come in the future ;) Where you always succeed is in igniting the love for archery in people - as you did for me, so thank you for that and god bless you!

That sucks man. I went to my first tournament at the age of 11 and I was "the guy" in my age range at my club. I collapsed in spectacular fashion and it took me awhile to recover from it. I never did tournament archery again but rediscovering instinctive archery has been amazing and incredibly fulfilling. Thanks for sharing your story. It's very brave of you.

Griz, I've always been an archer in it for the enjoyment of it, it is somewhere between a hobby and obsession. I entered a tournament recently, barebow division, with no other expectations other than the enjoyment of it and meeting others and seeing what it was all about. Turns out I won my division, although I didn't think I did that well. Hang in there, remember the fun of archery, not the fierce competition side.

Hay Jim. Couple things mate. Great video, Brave one, well done mate. It reminds me of my son Dan. Does Martial Arts. Amazing at it, many trophies. Got into the GB team and first competition went south, very like your experience. However, 3 years later he won a World Championship in Greece, against the then Greek champion on home ground. So,no biggie, im sure you'll get there. And if not? So what. You inspired me to pick up a bow again after 35 years! I fly to Canada in few weeks. First thing i did was Google Archery Ranges/Bow rental by my Hotel. The second point is:- My GRIZZLY STRING is Epic!! Thank you :-)

No need to change your approach at all!!!! The first reason for doing something is enjoyment not competition. You’d lost the enjoyment because of the enormity of the situation. You’ll ‘knock their socks off’ when you shoot again as you know how!! 🏹👍🏻

You were always one of my inspirations for traditional archery (along with Jeff Kavanagh) and I suspect that I'd perform the same. For me it's always been about playing in the woods with friends - most of the time when we field shoot no one even bothers scoring. I do feel your pain about classifications though - I shoot horsebows which puts me in a very weird category.

Hey there my new friend from across the sea, i enjoy your channel vary much, shooting and hunting with traditional equipment is a passion or obsession of mine and im glad to see your comittment to your archery in your country! Im not familiar with great britain but i would imagine your shooting ( hunting) is a might limeted ? Anyhow my lady and i shoot 100+ arrows a night in the summer and we can hit a 3d shoot every weekend if we so choose, and i feed my friends and family solely on venison that falls by my arrows, this is an open ended invite to come to the us, shoot a few thousand shafts and enjoy some of our fine bowhunting in the fall of the year, up to you, thanks again for the fantastic channel mate, hope to hear from you, good shootin , - Gabe( turkeyman ) Franks, lucas ohio U.S.A

I'm sure you've heard this before but people learn more from their failures than from their successes. If there is any tidbit I can offer is when you compete on any level continuing on, look at yourself as your opponent. Seek to outdo yourself and conquer yourself, not the other people there who just happen to be competitors. I think you identified something very important in your experience you're vlogging about here... You got into your own head. Other shooters at that tournament didn't do well because they were exercising great effort to beat everyone else. They were more successful because what they did accomplish was conquering their own fears, their own doubts, their own voices in their heads that question everything and cause themselves to be distracted. I know I might be sound a little esoteric here but you have to get to that point of 'no mind.' When you address a target and you bring your bow up, nothing else in the world should be on your mind. All those tasks that you have to do to prepare for your competitions, do them when you practice i.e. range estimation, adjusting onto target, etc. Leave the 'tasks' where they belong, they don't belong in your competitions. So when you prepare in the future, look to take all that extraneous stuff off your plate that you don't want in your tournaments.

Everyone who tried to compete, no matter if barebow/trad/freestyle/field/whatever knows that feeling. Archery is 80% psychological sport tbh, that's not about if that's your style or not. It's all in the head, if you can handle the stress or not. Good to hear you wan't to give it another shot, good luck, you can do this =D
