In this MCU Video Essay, we discuss Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and whether or not it has the MCU back on track after a string of misfires. Although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is arguably the best MCU product since Avengers Endgame, it still falls victim to many of the issues that plague modern MCU films and shows. Even though it's a very good film, is it the savior the MCU needed? We dive deep into that question.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Black Panther Wakanda Forever (2022)
She Hulk - (2022)
Thor: Love & Thunder - (2022)
Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse of Madness - (2022)
Moon Knight - (2022)
Falcon and The Winter Soldier - (2021)
Spider-Man No Way Home - (2021)
WandaVision - (2021)
Loki - (2021)

Great conclusion. For me the most strong point of the movie was rocket's character arch and high evolutionary as Villain. Adam warlock could have been a little bit stronger? I guess but okay for a new born god baby. End the end best marvel movie since Infinity war. 8.5/10 ( i consider Endgame 8/10 and NWH a overrated movie) thank you

I actually disagree with your thoughts on the future, I think that secret invasion, which is next in line will be epic, I am hyped for Loki season 2, (although kang’s future is up in the air regarding Jonathan majors) and then the marvels and echo closing out the year, both looking pretty shit, but I’m optimistic on marvel altering their show releases following echo as it is getting rid of the week to week crap, being able to take a day to binge out a whole show is much better than the week to week stuff imo, I don’t think gotg 3 saved the mcu, but I think the worst is behind us. I'm gonna be honest, I disagree on Adam Warlock and I think he was used perfectly. In his original comic debut, he was pushed aside and acted childish. The goal was to create the perfect being but he went rogue. However, overtime he would evolve and learn. This is Adam Warlocks origin story, and he's going to evolve even further.

I love this movie, I like that they didn't stray away from the animals and the pain they went through, rocket is my favorite character and has been since 2014. My favorite quote from the original film is "Well, I didn't ask to get made! I didn't ask to be torn apart and put back together over and over and turned into some little monster!" Seeing what made him, how he is, is something I'm glad was put in this, and gives him so much depth.

The humor might not always land but it’s always in character so it all works imo. The things you think don’t work, worked for me. It makes senses as a whole, probably in part because of how it was always planned to have Rocket as the secret protagonist. Partly because setting characters at a incomplete state that there is room to grow. Adam Warlock has that room to grow, so it’s a fine into to him. It’s just a good movie period.

Ultimately I don't think so. This movie was the way it is because James Gunn didn't set out to make a movie with all of these connections to the other movies. This one was a pure ending to a trilogy. This is a guardians of the Galaxy movie not a marvel movie. That's what makes it so good, it's fresh to have a more grounded movie that doesn't have this massive world ending avenger level threat so it has time to actually focus and develop the main cast to tell a gut wreching and beautiful story about doing everything in your power to save your friends life. The rest of the marvel movies will be just like the rest, Way too much humor where it's not needed to the point where it destroys the tone of the movie (looking at you thor love and thunder) and they're going to focus way too hard on developing Kang over the 15 bazillion things coming out on disney plus because apparently every movie/show they release has to be a part of this massive overarching story. The MCU took a nosedive in quality after endgame. Every since then everything theyve released has been incredibly bland. guardians volume 3 is just so disconnected from the rest of the MCU and it is a much better movie for it.
@lexruptor

@huskycruxes7232
@huskycruxes7232 Жыл бұрын
@@lexruptor after endgame the MCU has gotten progressively worse for multiple reasons. They want to tell a huge interconnected story but because every separate franchise has a different director and writer there's no consistency That's what killed the sequel trilogy for Star wars. You can't properly tell a story without consistency. If JJ Abrams just made all three of them, maybe he could have made palpatine coming back make sense. But since Rian Johnson wasn't trying to tell the same story, it was just thrown at us randomly and didn't make any sense. The other thing that's killing MCU is oversaturation. There are so many movies and shows coming out that it's incredibly hard to keep up with. When I wanted to watch multiverse of madness I was told that to get the most out of that movie I had to watch the entirety of wandavision. That's homework. Especially for someone like me who really couldn't care less about Wanda's love life with vision. The early days of the MCU were great because they knew exactly what they wanted to do from the start. They had a roadmap to follow to get to endgame. The infinity saga also didn't have the rampant oversaturation that today's have. If you wanted to watch endgame all you had to do was watch the main movies. Now if you want to watch a new film you first have to watch multiple seasons of Disney+ shows like Hawkeye, moonknight, falcon and the winter soldier, she hulk, and Loki. You cannot expect your watchers to consume every single bit of your content to be able to understand what's happening. That is a recipe for failure. Quality not quantity

To be fair, they are slowing their output this year. There are no more movies until The Marvels in November and 3 tv series. In 2021, they released 4 movies and 5 tv series. Of course it remains another question whether what they release is any good but fewer crappy shows is better than lots of crappy shows.

That's exactly how they did it. This is more of a guardians movie than an MCU film. Because it's so disconnected and it's telling its own story it actually has the freedom to be an in depth character study on each of the guardians instead of watching them beatinf another generic world ending threat

Yes. James Gunn even talked about this too. Stories are stories, superhero is just a genre. Most of the new MCU are too concerned with aesthetic and tropes that they actually feel samey --- I suspect this is on Disney trying to manage brand. I legit don't get fans that're calling Phase 4 "risky". Ironically, movies with more focus on characters and stories serve/expand the universe better. MCU itself forgot about, but they used to do it.

To answer the question posed in the video title, I'd have to agree, this movie isn't going to get the MCU back on track. It's a good movie largely because it focused on telling a self-contained story, not featuring mindless cameos and introducing characters solely for the sake of them starring in spin-offs to make even more money. It seems like Disney just let James Gunn do whatever he wanted for the most part, and it paid off because it was a director/writer fulfilling a singular vision. And that's all great, but Disney isn't going to stop being disney. Much like Andor is for the current state of Star Wars, it's a surprisingly good fluke that will inevitably, immediately give way to more corporate half-assery. Enjoy Guardians while you can - it's probably all downhill for the next several MCU projects.

Despite all of this I loved the movie for the characters as I always have. Not action or big explosions, but an engaging character study. These characters are very likable and relatable. People like them. I also appreciated a Marvel movie that looked like a big budget movie and not just an over-glossed Disney+ show. Disagree with you. The comedy for the most part was good, and when it wasn’t, it wasn’t a detriment to the story. It never took me out of it, and I hate Love and Thunder and think that movie was “death by a thousand jokes” Adam Warlock was also great here. You don’t need him to be a big focus here, he’s obviously gonna be used for future content and this is his origin. If you have an issue with Warlock because he’s not like the comics exactly, then uhh, your not judging the movie on its own merits. He got the theme that Rocket was dealing with, the theme Gamora was dealing with, and the theme that Starlird dealt with in Guardians 2. He fit the story perfectly. I do agree this guy was a better Kangaroo than Kang.

This movie was great. I still have a laundry list of critique about it, but it mostly kept me engaged through the whole watchtime. Matter a fact Rocket, Adam and The High Evolutionary were so great I wished the movie to be longer or just more focused in those three characters. There was some serious space for development for all three of those that we just sadly missed. I think all of us nearly shed a tear for Rocket. What however scares me though, is that this movie was great but still far from perfect. And to add onto that, it was a GOTG film, which has always been a bit separate from the rest and clearly crafted with more care and respect. What I mean by this is, it is still highly likely that the rest of the super hero genre wont be able to do the same. James Gunn was just a gift to the MCU and I still view GOTG vol. 1 as a higher quality movie than I do with Infinity War. More specifically I liked the idea of Adam being in essence a toddler and so for didn't mind him as comedic relief in the beginning. But I would have liked to see some serious time and development put into him instead of useless jokes through out the movie. So I agree that the end product was bad but it could have been a shining highlight right up there with the Rocket.

The only way to save the MCU is to give it all the same level of connectivity and direction phases 1-3 had, hire talented writers and let them work without endless micro-management and either cut down on the CGI or cut down on the number of projects reliant on it so that when there is CGI it actually looks half decent

I think the MCU isn’t recovered. Don’t forget these characters have been with us since Phase 2 and I think this was a lovely closer to these characters. But if you look at the new line up for Guardians characters and all the other franchises haven’t got their characters built up yet and people aren’t too interested in the new set of characters. I feel Guardians Vol. 3 was a success, in a storm of otherwise crap. Future included. Let’s hope I’m wrong.

Gotg 3 was a brilliant and fantastic film for me. It is currently my favorite MCU movie of all time. Maybe it's just recency bias, but I think the MCU is on course correct. I know this is controversial but I'm actually excited for The Marvels. It probably gets a bad rap from the Brie Larson drama. But I definitely think Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris will perform great in the movie. Like people have barely seen any of the film and already its being attacked by trolls. Even if the movie is actually decent, people will stay find ways to burn the film to the ground.

(Didnt watch your video, but Ill answer the question you ask in the title of your video) No, James Gunn just has consistency. He is a golden era MCU director, that's why this movie was pretty good. Unless Marvel starts to hire directors who have integrity and actually understand comics. It's downhill from here. Marvel needs to wrap it up with the Kang saga.

I hadn't thought of comparing Kang to the High Evolutionary and honestly when you do, it seems like the final nail in Marvel's coffin. The final entry from a writer on his way out has a better villain than the villain that the rest of the franchise has been building towards. I'd want to see if they put the Spidey's Symbiote suit in Secret Wars, but besides that, I'm not really looking forward to anything that's announced.

GOTG 3 is not a Marvel project it's a JAMES GUNN project he had every right to do anything with this project that's why he even used the First MCU F bomb. Marvel is gonna come back tho Secret Invasion looks solid Loki S2 and Echo have a major role for the future of the MCU(Loki S2 will set up Deadpool 3 and Echo would set up the street level Avengers of the MCU)

IMO, it's bad that the MCU has a "track" at all. They just need to make good, standalone movies and a do a crossover from time to time, without worrying about some kind of overarching narrative. The Phase I, II and III movies were leaving hints but all of that was pointing, very clumsily, to Endgame, but we had two Avengers movies before that didn't have much more lead up than "Hey, these are going to be in an Avengers movie later."

An ongoing scene is suddenly stopped for a joke or some quippy lines is annoying but it was kind of a gotg thing. However what made this jokes annoying is that marvel do this in all of their movies now that it lost its uniqueness. While I was watching Gotg, I could tell a joke was coming when a serious scene was going on. Gotg vol 3 felt like the cherry on top after Endgame. I'm not a fan of volumn 2 but this one made me appreciate gotg trilogy more. I mean, Rocket is my favourite member in the guardians, seeing his heartbreaking backstory was truly worth it.

At the end I disagree on the other projects most likely being bad, I think-maybe because we haven’t seen much of the characters we’re getting shows/movies for-there’s a lot of room for these new projects too surprise us and be good. I’m especially hyped for The Marvels, though I have a feeling Captain Marvel will hold the movie down a bit.

U mention that Adam shouldnt be in the movie, but then who would injure Rocket? The whole starting point of the story is that he almost kills Rocket. And I think if its true what you just said in the video and Feige wanted Adam in the movie, then we can assume they want to have him in others movies like secret wars or kang dinasty...what better introduction could he have? A Vol.4 without Gunn? I dont think so...

I should hope so. I mean, I know that most MCU film writers and directors are not as talented as James Gunn, but Phase 5 and Phase 6 going forward should definitely have a different plan to avoid making the same mistakes as Phase 4. I might be the only person in this comments section looking forward to The Marvels because I liked watching Iman Vellani in The Marvels, and I want to see how she will bounce off of Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris in case the film has a plot that is any more interesting than what the first trailer showed us. We need a much better reason to be engaged with the plot beyond it having a diverse trio of superheroines. May 20, 2023, 2:00pm

So much drama and prognostication of downfall This is normal.existing fans hate change despite the fact that actors age out and newer audiences need new characters and stories that fit the times. Endgame was a peak that cannot be forgotten for a while. Transitioning amd building toward a global audience while pleasing the old audience is not easy. It will be hit and miss. To hat on Disney for trying is ridiculous. At the same time, it is good to criticize and vote with $$$$$.

After seeing the bad stuff that the Disney / Marvel duo has pulled out lately, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has been a blessing. However, to say that an entire franchise is safe from just one film is not saying much, especially taking into account that the next film to be released (The Marvels) is likely to be a failure across the board. You know what they say, only time will tell.
