The MCU is losing the magic that made it so popular during the Infinity Saga. Phase 4 has been disappointing and shows like She-Hulk are leading the downfall of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this video we discuss why the MCU is falling apart, everything from the disappointing Disney+ Shows, to the disappointment on the big screen with films like Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness, Thor Love and Thunder and more! We also touch on what the MCU is doing well including Moon Knight and Spider-Man No Way Home.

this isn't the problem. The problem is bad writing. "everything is separate" is what it was before the MCU, and it was OK, but not nearly as fun as the first 3 MCU phases and Agents of SHIELD which was basing most of its events on the movies. And that was the best time ever.

The crossovers aren't necessarily the problem. The crossovers elevated the pre infinity war MCU and gave it a satisfying interconnected feel, the problem now is that it feels like they're leaning into nostalgia stoking or just purely to setup things that haven't had pay off. I think there's a bit of rose colored goggles here as well. There was plenty of duds and stinkers back then as well. A ton of "Are these actually MCU?" shows that flooded netflix and hulu for one example. (Daredevil is the one exception, but it's also better than anything in the actual MCU, soooo)

The part about dumbing down male characters to make the woman seem better. ARCANE DID THAT SO WELL. They made amazing leads and gender didn’t matter, they were all amazing and shined in their own way. The men weren’t dumbed down and the woman weren’t toxic to them. They made all their characters good and the character development made them better. They weren’t afraid to let the leads lose they showed how it makes them strong and that they can get back up. Half the projects don't even have their own significant plots, let alone any form of overaching plot. After Endgame, I had a good feeling like this would happen. In the comics, I thought it got confusing and went all over the place when they took the MCU into other worlds. Too many people treat the MCU like Pokemon. You don't gotta catch 'em all. MY husband of 30+ years has been a comic collector since before I met him. Like most comic readers, he's a specialist on his favorites, and he knows less about -dumber- uh, _less beloved_ titles like The Eternals. We could never afford to possibly buy him ALL the comics and ALL the side quests, and that's how his subscriptions are planned. He subs to just the ones he follows, and he says most of the crossovers are still fun. What I really wanna know is WHEN we're gonna (if ever) gonna get even just a little *ELFQUEST* on the big screen.

I have to wonder if the issue goes deeper. Everything under Disney is in disarray, from Star Wars to Disney proper -- and, while I don't know the inner workings of the corporation, I can't help but notice the through line. That through line being Disney itself. There must be something going on inside the executive offices that explains why everything has gone to hell.
@optimusbee1274

Yeah the first issue was the bob chapek had become CEO of Disney, he probably made it so that alot of content went to Disney+, and it didn't help Kevin fiege lost the amount of control he had before endgame, as there was rumours after Bob iger came back recently that Kevin fiege was being forced to do some things he didn't want to, which didn't help, as some of the writers got too much control and made the shitty stuff how they wanted it, like for she hulk and thor, I'm pretty sure they got full creative control, hence making it as terrible as they did, which didn't happen in phase 1-3, but now there's some hope that the MCU could possibly get back on track, with the new projects looking of the previously quality that had the fans love it for why they did.

Eternals tried to be different but failed, and that hurt because I honestly liked the Eternals and appreciated how they changed the MCU’s landscape. What the MCU needs is to bring in well written characters to take the place of Iron Man and Captain America; they need new leaders because right now there aren’t any. Doctor Strange got sidelined in his own movie, Thor is a joke, and Spider-Man just isn’t cut out to be the leader. Also, the MCU needs to drop the leftist politics, this is a big reason why many people aren’t supporting these projects anymore, especially the comic book fans who actually care the most about these projects and will pay the most money toward supporting them.

What the MCU needs to do is not go bigger and wider, but deeper. It needs to flesh out characters to the point Where you actually care about them. That way your reason for watching isn't, "How on earth are they going to stop this threat" insead it's because you care so much about the characters that you wonder "what are they going to do next".

Losing Cap and Tony was a good thing, story wise. The problem is how they followed it. I want to because some characters I'm really interested in, but it is just so much and you have to see and follow everything to get the overarching story. And I like overarching stories in my media. I gladly read 20+ books in a series for the overarching story. But the sheer volume of content in the MCU, quite a bit of it concerning characters I don't care about, makes it hard to get into.

I feel like Thor could've been the next leader of the MCU. He endured so much tragedy and sadness, they could've made his entire story in Phases 1-3 one big origin story for the most selfless, empathetic, unwavering, powerful leader the franchise has ever seen. Because he lost everything. He literally blames himself for the snap. Kind of like how Wolverine became the leader of the X-Men due to his personal tragedies making him a legendary leader. A story like that with Thor would be something that has NEVER been done before in such a well developed way. Literally a Shakespeare-level journey. He would've had the tragedy, charisma, amazing story, unwavering moral compass, and power to be a suitable successor to Cap and Tony, if they kept developing him correctly. Marvel's new "anchor" character. Thor blames himself for the snap, which caused Endgame, and then Tony and Cap die because of something he thinks he caused... if that isn't a PERFECT tragedy/catalyst for Thor stepping up to the mantle then I don't know what is. But no. It just seems like Marvel is making the worst possible decisions they could make right now. And even if they were unsure if Hemsworth would sign on again in 2026 - that's still ok. If he became the leader for years and then they killed him, it would've been one of the most legendary deaths to grace the screen and would've been a catalyst event for the growth of other heroes and the next leader. That is how good epics work.

I really don’t feel like Downey and Evan’s loss were treat with the severity that they should have been. Both characters, but even more so their actors were equally significant parts of the nucleus holding the IP together in the public perception. The sentimental real estate that those two actors held has to be redeveloped with new characters. And with actors of a particular calibre that can decisively win the hearts of the audience. I don’t think we’ve seen a clear and calculated effort to fill that void yet. Until then, I think these projects will just haphazardly orbit an established core of characters that while strong, are still very obviously lacking the strength to serve as nexus for an increasingly exhausting and convoluted cast of characters.

I liked the idea of keeping the movie verse separate from the TV verse as they're on different scales but compelling in their own rights. Nobody with a life can possibly catch all these movies, series, AND the comic books! Most comic book fans are specialists in the specific titles they read and pay attention to. *Nobody expects you to be an expert on all things MCU.* In the end, I think they're just trying to make a little of something for everyone. @@Sarappreciates Hell, even comics need to "reset" their universes every 10 to 15 years because all these storyline become too convoluted and need to be stripped back down to new(er) origins. And even then, these are screen adaptations, not comics. You can read a comic book in a matter of minutes, whereas movies and especially TV series take at least a couple of uninterrupted hours. Funny thing is you're saying exactly what I'm saying: I don't need to watch these, so I won't. The problem is that Marvel WANTS a steady viewership across all shows and movies, and are making them more and more intertwined to make viewers feel compelled to watch if they want the whole picture, but this strategy just might backfire if viewers go "Well, okay, I guess I don't have to watch all of them". For these adaptations to get sequels and spin-offs there has to be sufficient audience interest (and cash, because that's all the studio cares about) and if you start splintering the viewership that has made the MCU the media giant it is today then you also hurt newer titles coming out like Ms Marvel because the viewers will just prioritize the ones that catch their eyes. Instead of relegating what appears to be a future big name in the franchise to streaming, why not start off phase 4 by giving Ms Marvel her own (origin) movie? Streaming is big (albeit already starting to show the cracks) but it still feels like spreading Marvel properties thin when what made the MCU so popular was that it was a cinematic experience.

I've been saying this since the Disney+ shows started. They should've made them films and released them as exclusive movies to the platform. It's not like a 900 episode series where you can just sit down and start watching, it's a meandering maze of bullshit. Nobody ever gets this right, hell even the streaming services struggle to handle the way shows are made these days. Obviously making the next game of thrones episodes into a different show makes sense on the surface, but deep down it will only generate the same issues over time, you could literally skip a season of a show because it lists them weird. From what I understand about the situation as consumerism changed from satellite to streaming, businesses changed their model to maximize profits and forgot to include writers and actors as seen with ScarJo. It seems the entertainment industry failed to adapt to the younger generations and the idea of streaming and were so caught up with lining their pockets they forgot to pay the toll to the people who actually give them a product to sell in the first place.

SO now that you mention marvels dumbing the males for the sake of diversity, it makes me sad to see it go that way becuz I personally enjoy male heros as I equally enjoy the female heros when they are equally smart, cool and fun.

I think No Way Home had more value than just it’s nostalgia. It actually manage to make a well written story that involved the other spideys. To me, even though obviously the studio’s main reason for the movie is as to bring back Toby and Andrew, with the way the story was written, they didn’t feel crammed in for no reason. They contributed to and blended well into the story. I think No Way Home is the prime example of how to do nostalgia-bait correctly. Doctor Strange 2 was not.

I think everything, except the kids series (and kids favorites like Spiderman) should be R rated. Teenagers will watch them anyway, like I watched Terminator as a child without anyone telling me it was for adults. I don't get those ratings honestly, they are mostly invented by purist mothers who are very sex negative and think that implied sex, like a couple going to bed together, the next scene they are waking up, should be R-rated, when in reality kids who are too young to see that, don't even understand there was anything sexual and kids who are old enough, well, they watch it anyway or have sex themselves. I've even heard that someone wanted to make Jojo Rabbit R-rated, not because of Nazis and war, but because a boy kisses a girl, even though it is a very typical kiss in kids movies, nothing with tongue. Essentially, almost any R-rated movie is suitable for kids over 10 in my mind, some even for younger kids. I think it is a weird American thing to give anything that has romance plot a R rating and avoid sexual topics when it isn't even necessary, because too young kids won't understand anyway or if they do, they see it as a boring and adult thing. Obviously I don't mean movies like Beach Bum that has very vulgar sex scenes, but most movies are neutered already, even if they are R rated.

I think one of the special things about The Avengers was that we got so much time with each of them and that helped us to establish a connection with the characters. It was a very slow burn and it all felt like it was leading up to something. We didn’t really get new franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy and Dr.Strange until we established our connections with the other characters. Also, The Avengers was novel when it came out. It was one of the first times people had seen a cinematic crossover on such a huge scale. Now that the novelty of that is wearing off, it’s starting to expose all of Marvel’s current flaws even more. They’re introducing new characters and franchises *way* too quickly, they’re not taking time to really let us sit with these characters. And they’re also relying far too heavily on the quippy fourth-wall breaking comedy. It’s getting stale. I don’t go to watch comic book heroes on screen for the content to basically shame me and talk down to me for consuming it, I go to it to suspend my disbelief and exist in a fantastical reality. Marvel got “cool” and immediately lost sight of who their content was originally for: nerds. They can’t get away with leaning on tropes and putting out cheap unfunny garbage.

Bruce’s area of expertise isn’t anger management. His area of expertise is more “managing a mental illness (either Borderline Personality Disorder or Dissociative Identity Disorder, with the comics version being DID and the mcu version implied to be more like BPD) that interacts with his superpowers to result in a rampaging hulk and a meek Bruce banner”. He had a sample of one, assumed his shit generalized, and refused to reassess whether his approach was truly necessary even after she demonstrated a level of control it took him 15 years to develop inside of a week. And, frankly, given his intelligence and his experience with superpowered individuals, his continual insistence that she needed intensive treatment came off as mansplaining. I don’t think his driver was so much sexism as it was shame at realizing that his manifestation of Hulk powers was about his own defects and not his accident. But I do think if his cousin had been a man and otherwise presented identically, a realistic depiction would show him taking the man’s word for it much more quickly. Shit, he didn’t even consider the possibility that her being a woman alone could alter her response to the gamma stuff. There are like decades of flawed assumptions continually made by smart people based on studies of men wrapped up in that. Bruce wasn’t being portrayed as a bad guy there, or acting out of character. He was just acting like men act when it comes to women challenging their authority or expertise. And he recognized, eventually, that he was in the wrong. Because he was way in the wrong.

By starting a new with a different comic universe to reprise to film its possible and there are so many to chose from if they got some actual fans into the big room they could get farther than with where they're going now

I mean I personally really enjoyed Loki, it's the only show so far where I couldn't wait to watch the next episode. Also the amount of post-credit scenes that they have set up is kinda insane. Like there hasn't been enough time to see if they'll follow through, but like how are they going to fit all of these new characters into the next couple of phases??

The biggest thing I got from the Eternals as a 21 year old is "omfg is that really Harry Styles?!" And I cried laughing when Icarus flew into the sun 😂 And honestly I wish they made eternals a TV show because it was so crammed with stuff it was overwhelming

Agreed. A lot of people were way too harsh on it. Eternals had great characters and (what looked like) an awesome storyline, but they really fucked up by trying to cram everything into one movie. They should've just gone the Moon Knight route and made it a mini-series.

I was thinking the same thing when endgame ended, they could go bigger but not very much I really expect them to go back to small and individual, like say there would be an actual threat headed for Tony Stark in particular or Thor or a single point that we care about deeply- they SHOULD have learned into Dr Strange more as he was becoming another iron man it felt like. But nope girl power all the time.

I personally loved Moon Knight, but ironically I loved it BECAUSE it was so separate from the rest of the MCU. It felt like a standalone Egyptian fantasy that I could watch while pretty much ignoring everything else in the MCU lol.

I felt this exactly. I liked Shang Chi a lot too because of it's lack of envolvement. It's imperfections shrank in comparison to the bloated Multiverse of Madness.

I liked it but it kinda lost me after half the season. Finished and still enjoyed it. Can´t really put the finger on what exactly bothered me. Still 1000% better than anyting else Marvel made that time tho.

That's exactly what has me so chill about Phase 4 taking its time. Like, this is exactly what I like about Marvel in the first place. I'll never read every comic, and I'll never watch every MCU project. You don't have to, it's an entire Universe for a reason. The fun part is when your favorite arc crosses a friend's favorite arc. Let the stories meander a little bit. I will say, I wish we had more variety in the genres of the projects. I hope the upcoming launches commit a bit more to a niche style that compliments the character.

This is a perfect way to describe it. We love the comics and watched them descend into event/crossover oversaturation. The movies followed that sad trend.

They also forget that most of those heroes we love from MCU had pretty bad introductions. Captain America 1 was bland Thor 1 was bad and thor 2 is the worst MCU Movie out. They all grew over the years into what we love. These characters all have had better intros than over half of the old guard.

If they succeed in bringing in the Fantastic 4 then Reid Richards could help with some of the leadership problems. I'm also hoping they make Dr Doom awesome. Also both Starlord and Nova step up in the comics and show their quality.
