Do you know that their living room and bedroom are the same place, and that most Japanese people sleep in their living room. ~ Speaking of European Colonization of North and South America, Australia and New Zealand in Asia-Pacific region., may I ask why didn't they Colonize vast green fertile bountiful Iceland in the Atlantic, a short distance away, with hardly any population even today; and why New Zealand in Asia-Pacific region halfway around the world??

I think the idea of returning an old object to its original owner hundreds of years ago is kind of tough and sort of dumb. Especially when it has passed through so many hands of centuries. If the Kohinoor is returned to the in India then they need to return it to the Durrani dynasty in Afghanistan. Then then they need to return it to the Afsharid dynasty in Iran. Then they meet to return it to the Timurid dynasty who controlled modern-day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, much of Central Asia, the South Caucasus, as well as most of contemporary Pakistan and parts of contemporary North India and Turkey (maybe they can smash it and share the little pieces). Then they need to put it back together and return it to the Khalji dynasty. Then they need to return it to the Kakatiya dynasty. Then they need to return it whoever dug it up in the Kollur Mine.

Valuable items have been moved through the time via conquest and violence since valuable items existed. The idea that we "return" something that came about from this ever ongoing process is dumb. Who would it go to? The person that took it from the earth? I wager that person didn't give it up freely to the local ruler that took it from him. The Cullinan diamond was a gift from the then South African Prime Minister Louis Botha, to King Edward. It was never stolen. That aside, as South Africans, the vast majority of us have no real interest in this trinket - what would we even do with it. In its current place and form, it gathers far more representation of South Africa than were it sitting unseen in a museum in Johannesburg or Cape Town. Let it stay where it is and and form of "guilt" or responsibility lay on the shoulders of the royals.

Now, successive thieves who have taken the diamond from the hindu temple remain , at least in my mind and in the mind of other civilised people, as low class common thieves. Losing a war is often a lot like losing in court, but instead of paying the other side's legal fees, you pay their war cost. Considering many of his older brothers and cousins and visors were killed in the aftermath of the 'Lion of Punjab"s death in the style of "Game of Thrones with fratricide, conveniently timed stones falling, poisoning, stillbirth, shotgun to the face assassination, all these events which destabilized the region and put England's interest in the region at risk and what lead to the 1st and 2nd Anglo-Sikh wars, the young High King Duleep Singh did well to give up the Koh-i-Noor Diamond in the 1849 Last Treaty of Lahore in exchange for 4-5 Lakhs Rupees per year (in 1849 USD exchange rate of 3.67), which adjusted for inflation currently is about 70million dollars per year. The treaty granted him a pension for the support of himself, his relatives, and the servants of the State, he lived a lavish lifestyle in Brittan until his natural death at the age of 55. His yearly pension alone was 2.5million Euros per year adjusted for inflation, that is not including castles or properties rented or leased for him. No doubt his mother or advisers of state helped him with this sweet deal. Alternatively, he would likely have died at a very young age just like all his predecessors. Remove the British from the equation and the unstable, declining, Sikh Empire is still looking down the barrel of unopposed Afgan or Russian invasions. It seems to be a big assumption that the diamond would in any other alternate history excluding the British, be today in the possession of India. Side note if you do not view the war or compensatory cost of the war or peace treaty deal as legitimate it seems the only fair thing to do if returning it is to figure out who mined it out of Krishna rivers mines 800+ years ago before it eventually came into possession by the first documented owner Mughal ruler Shah Jahan and then give it to the eldest living ancestor, I doubt whoever mined it was properly paid for it to begin with which is where the chain of theft probably started. Otherwise, the crown's claim is probably the most legitimate of its entire history since it's the only one with documented proof of any agreement of exchange whatsoever.

The whole explanation is factually and legally correct but morally absurd…..thats like if I saw a person with no limbs on a wheelchair and once his caretaker goes away, i drag him to a cliff and ask him to give me all his money, and in return i wont push him down…….and all of that considering that the handicaped guy was very happy in life, did good deeds despite being not so wealthy and i am a billionare…… The money i took from him was not loot but war cost which he paid to survive and i should not be ashamed of it as in return i let him live.
@blackfang1481
@blackfang1481 Жыл бұрын
@@hasrataulakh I don't get your analogy. British officers were killed during a time of peace along with an open rebellion that kicked off the 2nd smaller war that led to the amended treaty. Your wheelchair guy or his proxy "caretaker" seem to be firing a gun not seeming so crippled. Also looking at the history of the last 4 Maharajas that preceded him it's very likely the "caretaker" would push him off the cliff to rob him. Or in other words, the British saved his live im sure of this. Either his own extended family or Muslims would have ended his life prematurely. For the first war, it's debatable which army was more aggressive, both sides were provoking the other. It takes two armies to war. Was the Empire or his Mother who served as regent/his proxy during his "rule" so helpless as a man in a wheelchair? The Sikh Empire were immoral warmongering expansionists, the same as the British. Both expanded around the same time. The Sikh army began crossing the Sutlej on 11 December 1845, which the British viewed as an act of war (rightfully so since they had a treaty since 1806 not to have Sikh forces not to go beyond the Sutlej river). But go ahead and view this Empire as a helpless wheelchair guy if that makes you feel better. By the time of Ranjit Singh's conquest in 1820 there had already been hundreds of years of a dominant Muslim population and rule. The Sikh banned the repair of holy Muslim buildings, introduced forced labor, banned the call to prayer, made cow slaughter punishable by death, nearly destroyed an important mosque, razed other mosques and built gurdwrasin their place, and terrorized Muslims in the Punjab. The majority of Punjabis were Muslim. If a Sikh murdered a Muslim a fine of 16-20 Rupe, only 2 went to the family of the Muslim. If a Hindu 4 Rupes (2x of a Muslim) to the Hindu's family, and the rest to the Empire. Are these the good deeds your wheelchair guy did? These are two warmongers fighting for power and greed, not a wheelchair guy and a bully. You seem to want to overly focus on the child who had no agency, no moral or natural right to any seat of power or rule over people, (a situation caused might I add due to the repeated murder of the Empire's Maharaja by its own family members. Hereditary monarchy is an immoral concept of inherited power. The actual power was held at the time by his mother. Whether she was incapable to extend control over the Empire's people or army, or willfully complacent, as regent she would be morally responsible for her part in the conflict with the British in both wars. The child leader's responsibility would be symbolic only and any treaties he signed alongside members of the Council of Regency would be a technical legal application with the actual authority to approve such treaties presumably his mother, acting regent at the time. The boy's life was never at risk or threat by the British. He not only lived but lived like a king for the rest of his life. He was no more morally deserving than any orphaned child, he led a quite extraordinarily unfathomable privileged life from birth to death. If it has gone unnoticed to you, the agreement and payout to this child and his family and servants well exceeded the value of the diamond you seem to think was stolen. If you are sad the British collected taxes and not his family it's hardly an argument to do with morals or any less absurd. the Sikh Empire caused a significant amount of loss of human life and suffering in its short twenty-year existence. TLDR version: India has no convincing legal or moral claim to the diamond as far as I can tell. Sidenote: I get that there are many sides to this story and i left out any good accomplishments of Ranjit Singh. Also, it's quite well possible that land expanded into that all or some may have been at some centuries past Sikh lands, or some other ethnicities. This is a moral grey area at best. I personally don't put time limits on the recapture of lost property however there are degrees of morality in how this is done also the argument can be made against greater harm or what would cause the least suffering. Other thoughts: I do not think it is moral to fight a war you know you cannot win or initiate one because you simply think you might win. You must be certain that you can win and your reason should also be a moral one. Considering the Sikh broke a treaty crossing a river with an army we could consider this an act of war without moral justification. I get that the Sikh may have been "responding" to some irritation aka excuse. However crossing an agreed-upon boundary into anothers domain with an army is commonly viewed as an act of war, the Sikh maneuvering was blatant compared to the British military buildup on their side of the river.

Britain took over India and thus has as much claim to it as every single other dynasty before. It's very selective reasoning. If your argument is only the original finders and makers of an item are the only people deserving of the item, you'll find a lot of things in the world are problematic. And on that the people who originally made it are not there anymore. Is India the successor state to that original finder/maker? Why? Because they destroyed them in some older facet? Was it because a new society grew up there and took the place of the old one? And either case England took over India and basically did both of those things. Move on to one of the more pressing problems in the world .

It's a symptom of an overall problem, that problem being that the West can't keep its grubby hands off of other peoples' valuables/antiques.

@@socksleeve yeah because Indian people would never take something that isn't theirs right? No way they would allow an entire industry of scam artists that prey on elderly people to operate with impunity in their country right? I really don't see the moral high ground here.

I mean yes, but what are they all gonna do with one rock? Cut it up and give everyone a little piece? Wouldn't it be better to let them keep the diamond and charge them an astronomical amount of money based on what its worth and for all the time they've had it?

@@rationalsamrat3247 It doesn’t belong to Indians. If anything, it belongs to Pakistan. But since it was won by right of conquest it belongs in the UK. You can apply whatever symbolism to it but it doesn’t matter. It’s just a shiny rock.

I honestly don't understand why a gem is so valuable. It is useless sitting on top of your head, and honestly, it's a rock, like how exciting is looking at a rock? I understand it's rare, but seriously what can you actually with it. I'de rather have pizza for the rest of my life than that diamond

Shall they cut it up and distribute it to anyone who wants a piece? It isn’t harming anyone right where it is. As if no other country stole anything of value, that sits in a museum? There are so many more things, in this world, to worry about. Let’s get rid of the crazies that rule North Korea as a top priority, shall we?
