I am adopted and learned this about Carol Channing as I am learning about my own background, but only just now watching your video did I learn she actually had a black grandmother, so thank you.

Yes we knew about Carol Channing, but she was White-passing. So, at 80 plus years, her passing had no affect on her career or her legacy.

I wonder if the book "Have you heard about Kitty Karr" is loosely based on her. I wonder how many actresses passed back then. The book definitely portrays a large passing hollywood community.

It seems to me that the decision to pass was really her father's. Carol continued to live as she had been raised.

It's really a stretch to say that she was black if one of her parents was a biracial, white passing person. She isn't even the same thing as a biracial person like Mariah Carey. Mariah has had an intimate relationship with racial blackness.. she's definitely been in black spaces going back to her childhood I'm had an understanding of the cultural identity held by her black American relatives. If indeed Carol had black ancestry she was incredibly detached from it because her mother was a white woman in her father lived as month... And that's only if any of it is true, as she herself would later say she wasn't sure of her mother was telling the truth or not

Thank you....someone with sense not buying into that click bait title. If Carol Channing was AFRICAN AMERICAN then I'm white LOL... and I'm not! I have about as much European genes in me as she had black genes, doesn't make me white!

Most Black people during the time needed. She was black. All you had to do was look at Ray Charles could see that.

Carol Channing was actually tri-racial person. Her father, George Channing (born George Christian Stucker, Jr.). George Jr was the son of George Christian Stucker, Sr and Clara V. Jones. George Sr was a US born White man of German European origin and Clara was African American. Carol's mother was a Jewish lady.

Every time a biracial person does something historical, we're so enthusiastic about claiming them as "African American" and "Black" but I find when it comes to ordinary biracial folk, we exclude them saying they are mixed not black. Not directed at you or anyone in particular, just something I've noticed in general with our community.

Some Black people have inferiority complexes and think White people are superior to them. They are obsessed with determining whether White-appearing people have some Black ancestry. If they believe the people are Black, it's like they get a charge out of pulling them off their White pedastal. It's a kind if sickness. It still doesn't make that White-looking person any less White in appearance, nor does it make that Black person look white. They take this obsession a step further because these racial detectives are often observed with proving that light-skinned Black people are pure Africans, according to their declarations. This is a sick obsession.

OLD NEWS. My grandparents knew about Carol and Carol knew she was Carol. I don't know where you are from. You sound like you may not be from America..... If you were born here about 2 1/2 generations ago, you would have known she was black. For that matter so, was TV personality Dinah Shore !! Only diff ...... she sued her parents and forced them into a legal, NDA.

@@rasheed7934 I also forgot to mention Merle Oberon. She was born in the 20's or 30's. Came over here from Sri Lanka. Never publicly admitted it. Wouldn't even acknowledfe her mother when she would visit the U.S. She pulled the old 'mammy' routine. Passed her mother off as the maid.

Wow talk about click bait. And why are you proclaiming this as if she was TRULY African American! Google pictures of her father, he look just like a white man. Her mother was white, German-Jewish, her father was multi-racial (black mom and white father). How does this make her black? She said her father's skin tone was as white as hers! Black folks kill me trying to make anybody with one drop of black in them black...that's not true. She acknowledged she had black blood but she had WAY more European. SMH That woman was not African American so you need to retitle this click bait.

You must not be familiar with the One-drop rule. This rule was an actual legal principle of racial classification in the 20th century United States. It meant that any person with even one ancestor ("one drop") of Black ancestry is considered Black. It was put into place to keep children of mixed unions from marrying a White person. Mostly to uphold White supremacy. It was outlawed in 1967 in the Supreme Court case: Loving vs. (the state of) Virginia; when a White man wanted to marry a Black woman. Therefore, Carol Channing is Black, but preferred to pass as White. Had she not done that, we wouldn't be speaking of her today!

@@debrax4711 She was not black. Who over a certain age, haven’t heard of that one drop baloney? That wasn’t based on scientific FACT, it was based on RACISM and y’all know it. That black people have embraced that NONSENSE is really quite pathetic, it’s galling! She was not a black woman 🤣 and anyone with sight could see that.
