Of course it's a Christmas movie. Just don't get much snow in LA. Give Die Hard 2 a go. It takes place at Christmas too and has snow. Even Al makes a small appearance. The long blonde haired bad guy was played by Alexander Godunov who was born in the old Soviet Union and was a premier ballet dancer who defected while the ballet company was performing in NY city. He also was in "Witness" with Harrison Ford and "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks. Sadly he passed away in 1995 at the age of 45.

@@ForceOfLightEntertainment To me that one line is the epitome of who John McClane is. The reluctant hero. A man who would much rather be doing anything else with his time than deal with bad guys. He’s the man who will save the day but he’s gonna complain using humor while doing it. McClane wasn’t like Schwarzenegger or Stallone. He was the every man and I think that’s why a lot people love him and can identify with him more so.

Patton Oswalt once noted that the only successful theft made in this flick is the candy bar, and I haven’t been able to unhear that since. That scene is also great because that guy is an accessory to a number of felonies, but petty theft made him think twice.

1988, my first year living in Los Angeles, working in the entertainment biz, and living not far from that "Nakatomi" building (real name: Fox Plaza) on the Avenue Of The Stars in Century City. Construction of the building began in 1985, and at the time of filming, a number of floors were indeed still under construction. I first saw the movie in a theater, and it was a fun experience! Really enjoyed your comments and reaction to this.

"Welcome to the party, pal!" It isn't Christmas in my house until Hans Gruber is THROWN out of the Nakatomi Building. 😎 🎄 Fun Fact: Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career. First Face-Off Fact: The scene in which Gruber and McClane meet fir the first time was inserted into the script after Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) was found to be proficient at mimicking American accents. The filmmakers had been looking for a way to have the two characters meet prior to the climax and capitalized on Rickman's talent. Making Lemonade Fact: The scene where McClane falls down a shaft was a mistake by the stuntman, who was supposed to grab the first vent, as it originally was planned. He slipped and continued to fall, but the shot was used anyway; it was edited together with one where McClane grabs the next vent down as he falls.

I wouldn't say the friendship between John and Al just adds something to the movie. I'd say it's the heart of the film. They're two men broken in the opposite ways, who are able to help each other heal without even meeting face to face. John has complete faith in his profession, being dedicated to his backlog of cases and job back in New York, and willing to do his job in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds at the Christmas party. His personal life, on the other hand, is a complete disaster, his marriage ruined, his children taken from him, and his faith in his ability to be a husband and father severely shaken. Al is the opposite: a man whose faith in his profession has been destroyed, to the point where he is incapable of pulling his gun and so works what he obviously regards as a meaningless job, jockeying papers across a desk because he can't bring himself to go back on the street. His personal life, however, is going very well. He's obviously happily married, and eagerly anticipating being a father for the first time. Through Al, John is able to give voice to his fears and mistakes, confronting them, and realizing what he needs to do to repair his relationship with his wife. Through John, Al is able to see the value of his profession, and to find courage and meaning once again.

Great reaction, guys. And YES, Die Hard is a Christmas movie. The Christmas Hip Hop song Argyle was playing in the limo when he picked up John was Run DMC (not 'DNC'....lol) 'Christmas In Hollis' (as in Hollis, Queens, NY). And although it is indeed a Christmas movie with Christmas music, I have to also correct you on a mistake you made around the 24:59 minute mark when you said that they're even playing Christmas music when the bad guys got the vault open. That piece of classical music that played in that scene was Ludwig Van Beethoven's "Ode To Joy" (Symphony No, 9). It is one of my personal favorite pieces of music, but it is not a Christmas song. But that song was definitely appropriate for that particular scene, and it is one of those songs that can be used in ANY season. And talking about Beethoven's 'Ode To Joy', you should definitely check out the 1994 movie 'Immortal Beloeved' starring Gary Oldman as Beethoven. It is a GREAT movie...but it might be one that you may want to react to and post around Valentines season since it is a historical Love/Mystery movie. You gotta' react to' 'Immortal Beloved' (1994). 🙂🍺🍺🍺

Also speaking of Ode to Joy… the Tom Hanks/Shelley Long movie, The Money Pit, features the actor who played Karl in Die Hard (blonde baddie who comes back at the very end). In that film, he’s an orchestra conductor, and leads the orchestra in playing Ode to Joy at one point. 😊

Hans called him a cowboy, McLain responds with a cowboy phrase from Roy Rogers, the singing cowboy from the 1940s. Bruce Willis grew up watching Roy Rogers so that was incorporated into the character. Also why McLain called himself Roy on the radio.

Well, let's consider it: - antagonists are villains ruining everyone's Christmas and holiday season with their greed (and murder, and theft, and terrorism) - the protagonist is a good man but doesn't have the greatest relationship with his wife and family, which he aggravates with his grouchiness - he tries to stop the villains but it seems near impossible and he's vastly outplanned, outgunned, and outnumbered - it's only when things start to go very bad it dawns on him what was truly important, that although his wife knew he loved her it came with his anger, dissatisfaction, and lack of support, that he realized his own faults and expressed his regrets - at everyone's darkest moments, he turned it all around and saved Christmas for everyone (well most everyone, excepting people who dug their own graves, like the terrorists or Ellis, or the FBI agents who got too cocky) The Christmas is all there!

My Favorite Fun Fact about this movie: When Hans Gruber fell to his death, Alan Rickman (the guy playing Hans) was told that they would drop him on the count of "Three!". Without telling him, they dropped him on "One!" instead. The surprised look on Rickman's face looks authentic because he really was surprised. Also, don't worry about the people complaining that you laugh too much. This is a channel for YOUR reactions, not what someone else THINKS your reactions should be. Not just a Christmas Movie, THE Christmas Movie. Bruce Willis was a TV actor before this, and an A-Lister after. It was made on the relative cheap and had a cast of relative unknowns. The most known quantity was Director John McTiernan, in his third turn behind the lens, who was coming off directing Predator and this cemented his status (though it was damaged by 1993's Last Action Hero). Yes, the song in the cab was Run DMC's classic, "Christmas in Hollis"

I rewatched this, last summer. I just fell in love with it! I was watching it a lot! A lot, a lot! LOL! One of the things that worked so well in this movie is John's vulnerability. He's an average guy, he's not looking to be a hero. He just wants his wife back. He's fighting for her! In so many ways, I look at Die Hard as a love story. So many people have the debate rather it's a Christmas movie or not. One of my friends said, it's not a Christmas movie because it doesn't center on Christmas. Yes, it takes place on Christmas Eve and they play Christmas music in the background. But still. It's a straight up action movie!

Bazooka is the common name for a man-portable recoilless anti-tank rocket launcher weapon, widely deployed by the United States Army, especially during World War II. Also referred to as the "stovepipe", the innovative bazooka was among the first generation of rocket-propelled anti-tank weapons used in infantry combat. Featuring a solid-propellant rocket for propulsion, it allowed for high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warheads to be delivered against armored vehicles, machine gun nests, and fortified bunkers at ranges beyond that of a standard thrown grenade or mine. The universally applied nickname arose from the M1 variant's vague resemblance to the musical instrument called a "bazooka" invented and popularized by 1930s American comedian Bob Burns.

If memory serves, this was one of the first movies for both Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber here, Professor Snape in Harry Potter, Elliott Marston in Quigley Down Under, the Sheriff in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, and many more). Bruce Willis (John McClane here, Butch Coolidge in Pulp Fiction, Dr. Ernest Menville in Death Becomes Her, Korben Dallas in The Fifth Element, and Malcolm Crowe in The Sixth Sense - just to mention a few). The Fifth Element is sometimes called "Die Hard in Space". Regrettably, Alan Rickman is dead now.

Yes, they did have cell phones in the '80s.... They were much bigger, and for to expensive for most people to have one back then though. If you want to see an example of one of those cellular "BRICK" phones, think of Zach Morris from "Saved By the Bell" with his '90's cell phone... not much different. All they did was make and receive calls, with no frills for probably 10 times the price we get with our much more capable modern phones. If I recall, they came out for public use in the '70s, mainly for the ones who could afford it. Many cell phones back then were considered "Car Phones" because they were too bulky to be conveniently carried around everywhere... Many called them that whether they were in a car or not... True car phones, however, had much lighter hand sets, because it was wired to the car, with the bulkier hardware installed into the car itself.

A movie isn't a Christmas movie just because it takes place at Christmas time. You guys are the first reactors I've seen that didn't recognize Alan Rickman from Harry Potter. You touched on the everyman aspect of John McClane- the 80s were full of huge action heroes- Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Van Damme, etc, muscle-bound heroes who always know just what to do and never fail. I've read that the studio wanted someone more relatable for this movie- an average guy who finds himself in an impossible situation. Has faults and self-doubts, makes mistakes, a bit of a smart ass, but still likable. A great Christmas comedy to check out is Scrooged, with Bill Murray. Some other great 80s action movies worth checking out if you haven't seen them already are The Terminator, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Escape From New York, and Batman.

I've heard the "shoot for the knees" line with respect to combat before. I think it is because experienced fighters tend to duck for cover very quickly, so multiple shots at chest level will be too high after the first couple shots. It is not generally recommended for pure self defense against one or two attackers for tactical and legal reasons.

I realize the debate on Die Hard being a Christmas movie. It not only takes place at the time of year, but the big point is the entire movie takes place at the company's Christmas party. Die Hard is one of the most copied plots ever, yes. Without naming each movie, we have seen Die Hard on a battleship, on a train, on a plane, at a hockey game, at an airport (oh wait that is Die Hard II)... anyway, very copied.

Officially titled the M9A1 Rocket Launcher, it was called bazooka after a crude horn of that name used by radio comedian Bob Burns. The bazooka was developed chiefly for attacking tanks and fortified positions at short range.

@Whatisthisstupidfinghandle Жыл бұрын
True. But that was not a bazooka. It was a recoilless rifle. Bazooka was a much smaller man portable device. You saw him bolt it to the floor. That was much larger crew served weapon. Another movie with a recoilless rifle is Black Hawk Down. One of the Somali Technicals has one bolted to the truck bed

Great reaction and great review as usual, guys. Loved it! For another great Bruce Willis action movie that combines action and humor, other than the other Die Hard movies, which are also great, have a look at 'The Last Boy Scout (1991)'. It, along with the Die Hard series, is probably my favorite Bruce Willis movie.

The saddest thing is, as other commenters pointed out, that Die Hard series degenerated on the way. Number 2 and 3 were mostly solid, but both got marred (for me) by rather anticlimactic endings. Number 4 had great first 30 minutes and the very finale (although mostly copied from original movie), but there was a lot of PG-13 filler in mid-sections. Number 5 had no redeeming values whatsoever, other than tank destruction ride through Moscow sequence.
