"Yippie ki-yay, mother f***er!" This is so good. Easily one of the greatest action films and one of Bruce Willis' best roles. That tank top in in the Smithsonian for a reason. And it's also Alan Rickman's debut film. Amazing start.

The thing you liked - John not being indestructible - was one of the reasons why the film was such a huge success*. It came out right in the middle of the Arnie vs Stallone years, when enormous muscle-bound superhumans were the action movie standard, so John McClane was like the breath of fresh air in that environment *(the other reasons are just that it's a perfectly scripted action movie with a charismatic lead and villain) Merry Christmas and Don't Be Ellis

I'm firmly in the "Die Hard is a Christmas movie" camp, between the fact it's set at Christmas, all the jingle bells that have been worked into the score, and the protagonist learning to appreciate his family, it hits pretty much every requirement. Hell, the film is basically an adult version of Home Alone, which is proof enough of this fact in my eyes (though this film came first, so technically Home Alone is the kids' version of Die Hard, but I digress)

0:29 Ba-dum, tss! 🥁 Thanks for reviewing this. Definitely a Christmas movie, but for adults. Edit: The term "Die Hard" means someone who is absolutely committed to something. A die hard fan, a die hard hobbyist, a die hard adventurer, etc. In this case McCain was a die hard cop, and Gruber was a die hard thief. Kind of cool to see the two of them in their chess match!

YES!! THIS IS A CHRISTMAS ACTION MOVIE! Its based on the 1979 novel, Nothing Lasts FOREVER which was a sequel to THE DETECTIVE, which starred Frank Sinatra in a 1968 film adaptation of the same name.

Fun fact: the rumor is real. The shocking look on Alan Rickman's face as he was falling was real. They knew he was scared of heights and didn't tell him that he would be falling that far as they wanted to captured the scared looked of Han Gruber as he falling to his death.

I got to see this in theaters recently! They usually bring it back to theaters for a few days in December, and yes I do consider this a Christmas movie lol. I’ve only seen the first three movies, the second one is also a Christmas movie but it’s kinda mid compared to the first. The third one however, Die Hard with a Vengeance, is really good and it ties directly into the first, also Jeremy Irons is the villain! I’d definitely recommend it. I hope you have a good Christmas Sophia, I love you and your videos!

I have said before and will likely say again that one of the best things about Die Hard (1 and 3 at least) is a real sense of vulnerability to John. He can be dirtied up, battered, and bled. Not in the light ways either, he is a mess by the end of these movies. And then there's the factor of being off guard and facing smart opposing masterminds. It's not like in say.... Commando where Arnie can just load up at a secret weapons cache containing enough firepower for multiple spec ops platoons and mow down dozens of guys (not to say that isn't fun to watch), but with this, you get the very real feeling that at any time, his luck, cunning, skill, or resources could come up short. He's in the wrong place at the right time and flying by the seat of his pants.

It's always fascinating, albeit annoying, to hear the post-9/11 generation speculate as to whether a bomb of this size would make a whole building collapse. That question never came up before 2001, that's for sure. And the simple answer is: no, a bomb that size would NOT make a whole building collapse. This is an important reason why bombs rigged by random psychos don't bring buildings down on a daily basis. To put this in perspective, it took a whole jumbojet hitting and exploding in each of the Twin Towers to bring them down, and even then they remained upright for like an hour before collapsing.

Welcome to the party Sophia! Die Hard is a staple of the action genre and spawned many a derivative 'Die Hard in/on X' (Die Hard on a plane - Airforce One, DH on a boat - Under Seige, etc) The sequel is just ok (also Christmas time), but 3 and 4 are on par with the first.

Before this, Bruce Willis was known more for comedy roles than action roles. If you want to see a tv series starring both Bruce and his full head of hair, check out “Moonlighting”. It seems to have fallen almost entirely out of the cultural memory, but it was a bit of a cult hit way back when.

Not gonna lie, I kinda laughed when I saw this notification 😂 I know how anti-bare feet you are so I was thinking "oh man I hope the fact that John is barefoot the entire time isn't going to deter her from how iconic this movie is." 😂 Personally I think it was fun he was barefoot the entire time. Kinda added to the I guess bad-ass for lack of a better word for his character and it was also kinda funny. Also this is indeed 100% a Christmas movie! I mean I personally say that if a movie takes place at Christmas then it's a Christmas movie more specifically the majority of the movie takes place at Christmas even if Christmas isn't the main plot point. Merry Christmas Sophia! 🎄 Also on a more serious note, I really wanna take this opportunity to show some love for Bruce Willis who sadly as of lately has what's called Frontotemporal dementia. Traveling from NYC to California, Officer John McClane finds this song: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rb94n8h3q87Qdp8.html With this movie, the Action movie genre was changed. John McClane isn't a muscle-bound Rambo clone, is a working class guy like Argyle, has moments of Fear/Doubt/Introspection, takes damage, and is Dead Man Walking by the last quarter of the movie. Is it any wonder that men and women see John McClane as the Everyman Hero? Gene Belcher: "Why is no one singing? Why is no one dancing? Die Hard: The Musical!" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ott0p9JnmLKonKM.html" Movie meme: "It isn't Christmas until Hans Gruber falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building." Yippee Ki-Yay, Sophia.;) On an unrelated subject: Each time a KZfaq viewer falls in love with "Firefly," A Fox TV executive falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building.

Not a Christmas movie! It is a heist movie that just happens to take place at Christmas time. The fact that it’s Christmas is not essential to the plot. You can’t just throw some Christmas songs and decorations in any action movie and call it a Christmas movie. A Christmas movie needs to have Christmas be essential to the plot, basically a character itself.

While I am not defending Al's killing of a kid I feel context is important. Today all toy guns are bright colors and at a minimum have an orange piece at the muzzle to show it is a toy. In the 80s toy guns could look exactly like the real thing so until there was a law banning realistic guns many shootings like the one Al described happened. I had a cap gun in the early 80s that looked exactly like a snubnosed 38 special. It even had rotating chambers and everything. His regret for what he did and the fact that he took a bunch of abuse for not being "more of a man" and getting over it speaks a bunch about the character.

With the Christmas coming up, may I make a recommendation if that's OKay? I recommend Ernest Saves Christmas. I know it's not exactly a horror movie, but it's a Christmas classic. Plus, at one point the characters do visit the filming set of a fictional horror movie. It has Douglas Seale, the same actor who played the Sultan in Aladdin, as one of the best movie Santa Clauses ever. Also, it's just really funny and heartwarming. It's got that certain Christmas charm that's perfect for the holiday. It's a perfect way to start the Christmas season.

14:20 "It did that much damage?" Multiple explosions as John's C-4 care package blew up and that caused the remaining missiles to explode too. But, it was very little damage. Bright flash and broken glass and not much more. Think about this BUT NEVER DO IT: Hold your hand out flat and put a firecracker on your flat palm; Light the fuse. BANG! Your palm might get burned a little, but you'll be OK. Now get another firecracker but hold it in your closed fist and light the fuse. BANG! Your skin and muscle are ripped open by the blast, your bones are broken and you might lose fingers. What's the difference? When you contain the blast (closed fist), the rapidly expanding explosion needs to go THROUGH the container (your hand) which causes massive damage. When the blast can just expand into empty air (your open palm), it will, and anything nearby is comparatively safe since pretty much all the blast goes the other way. This explosion in the movie all goes out through the fragile glass windows so it does almost no damage to the walls and absolutely no damage to the structure. "Wouldn't the building collapse?" Actually, it's just fine. Just needs a few screen doors... Seriously though: in 1993, a bomb much, much, MUCH bigger (1,310 pounds of explosive) was detonated in the World Trade Center. That gigantic blast blew up a bunch of concrete and knocked out windows of many nearby buildings. Furthermore, much of the blast was contained inside the concrete structure which made it so the only way the blast could expand was to blow the building apart. As for the building's structure, it was fine. One structural beam was damaged and had to be replaced. The repairs were completed in 20 days and the building was back in business like nothing had happened. Compared to this explosion? 1.25 pounds of C-4 and a half dozen rockets, with 98% of the explosion going out the windows? Well, if that giant bomb couldn't bring down one of the heaviest, most massive buildings ever built, then this comparatively tiny explosion here never had a chance to hurt this building.

11:32 "What's that? Coke?" Nope. And definitely don't put this in your nose or, well, in any part of your body. That's C-4. Military grade plastic explosive. The good news is that it's super stable; you cannot detonate it by hitting it, shooting it, zapping it with a taser, or pretty much anything. You need special detonators to make it go boom. Luckily, that bag is full of the detonators. Like, enough detonators for a hundred of those bricks of C-4. Now, why so many detonators but only 1 brick of C-4?

Die Hard with a Vengeance is fun and it has Samuel L. Jackson and Jeremy Irons. ❤ If you haven't seen Inside Man with Denzel Washington I highly recommend it too. Something you said reminded me of that movie but I won't give it away in case you haven't seen it. You don't have to make a react video but I'd be interested to know if you watched it. I feel like Inside Man never got all the love it deserved. Anyways thank you for covering Die Hard and gushing over Alan Rickman.

If you like Die Hard got to checkout Violent Night. It’s Die Hard meets Home Alone with a touch of John Wick action with Santa Claus as the main character.

The first four Die Hard films are great. The fifth film is where they drop the ball.

Lethal Weapon Provides some competition for Die Hard as a Christmas movie though it is a bit less Christmasy. Die Hard 2 is good as is LW2. The later sequels of both franchises start to slip a bit after that, but are still very watchable.

If you think Akan Rickman was campy in this, you need to see "Robin Hood: Prince of thieves".😂

Sophia, did you watch this because it's a christmas movie or because you are getting into action movies? if you want an action movie, you can watch the first live action He man movie, Masters of the Universe (1987) He man is a action figure from Mattel the same company that makes Barbie, they had a cartoon movie in 1985 , the Secret of the Sword , that is more like the cartoon from 1983, He man and the Masters of the Universe, the 1987 live action movie has less in common with the cartoon and they tried to make it accurate ,but fell a little short, but people like it now as a cult classic.

Definitely watch 2, which is not bad, but 3 is a really good movie with Samuel Jackson.
