I really enjoyed this video. I have a soft spot in my heart for these old tractors. I’ve repainted several 4010s and a 4020. My dad had two 4010s , a 4020 power shift, which was one of my favorite tractors. He also had a 3010 which I still have. I also painted a 4010 for a friend once. As the equipment got bigger so did our tractors. My dad ended up selling all of them except for the 3010, I wouldn’t let him sell that one lol ( I later wished we’d kept the 4020😢). Ours were all propane tractors, I would love to have a 4020 diesel, console tractor, but I really would have no use for one other than to have just to have 😂. These tractors were so easy to work on. We did all our own overhauls and everything. I am wanting to build a shop just for restoring these old tractors, for myself and others. I really liked your 3020 with the factory duals, don’t see too many of those.

A little tid bit for you... The old oil bath housing can be converted to a dry filter. It takes a little cutting and welding. The worst part is getting all the screens out. I did one about ten years ago. Looked at a dry one on a 4020, did some measurements and made it work. New were still available at the time, but very cost prohibitive!!! Used must have been gold plated...they were almost as much as new!!! I think I had about a half day into converting it... Most of that was getting and cleaning up. Thanks for the video!!!

Lots of differences between the 10 series and the 20 series, which made the 4020 one of Deere's all time most popular tractors, as well as cementing the entire 20 series as a huge step forward for Deere's Utility Tractors. "Nothing Runs Like A Deere" 🦌 👍 🇺🇲

That charge pump explanation was the best I ever heard. Who in the world at JD ever thought that was a good idea I can't understand. I guess the dual PTO clutch prevented the charge pump from being driven all the time. All the brands of tractors of the time had their major flaws though.

I've spent I bet over a combined 15,000 hours on 4010 diesels and 4020 diesels both sycro and power shift. I have a 1966 4020 diesel of my own. My fuel filters are double spin on canisters with a drain/bleeder. I see yours was switched to the square one. (Stock up on them as I have had trouble finding various filters.) I was curious what the filter next to the generator is for. My block heater is mounted on that mount. I like the M&W cover on the hood. Most of the ones I see are hatchet patch jobs but I think if I were trying to make a clean restoration I'd take the hood to a good fabricator/bodyman and have something welded in so it looked clean. Nice tractors and a nice shop.

@ 2:25, the frame rails are most definitely different on the 4020! They were heavier, and the attaching points at the front of the engine block used 4 bolts instead of just 2 as with the 4010. These changes gave the 4020 considerable more strength for loaders. 4020 frames will fit right on a 4010, but if you try to fit 4010 frames on a 4020, you will weaken the joint at the front of the engine block.

Good video and comparison between the 10 and 20 series tractors. The tractor world was in a state of hyper-evolution in the early to mid 60's and the three heavyweights (JI Case, IH and JD) were going toe to toe. Many old timers will tell you that JD took a step back going from the horizontal two cylinders to the high speed inline six but JD had to keep pace with the 06 and 66 series IH and 30 series Case's of the day. All very interesting history that shaped the face of American (and worldwide) agriculture to what we see it as today.

Good looking tractor, however, I can't agree with the hydraulic levers on the console being advantageous. My 71' 4020 has the PTO to the left of the steering wheel and the hydraulic levers to the right of the seat. JUST LIKE the JD 4840 that I drove as a kid with a disc and cultipacker. Long story short John Deere changed the levers and PTO around and carried it on to the newer series tractors. I can't imagine feathering a disc in a wet spot with the lever on the dash. I was taught to spend a good percentage of my time looking back at the implement. That makes the right side lever perfect as you can adjust without actually looking. Long story short I think that mod on the late 4020's was a step in the right direction... FWIW, IMHO, and IME.

Front engine mounts 4010: 3 bolts, 4020: 4 bolts, engine block (drilling) and frame rails different, all other engine parts the same, at first on 4020, except fuel filters were cartridge on 4010 and spin on, on 4020. New style (69+) had basically a completely different engine , only really shared displacement and color. Early 4020 hydraulic system was identical to 4010 except for front drive coupling(interchangeable, most updated, as I don't believe old parts any longer available). The most significant difference is the PTO. The two speed gearing was located in front transmission case and shifted to 540 by no recess in low speed output stub. 1000 RPM was spring engaged, either with no stub, or the 21 splined stub with recess to not contact shift rod, passing through center of shaft. 4020 has two speed gearing added to the rear of trans-diff housing, and had no mid or front PTO. I think that this change was made to accommodate the option of power shift transmission. I have found the weakest part of all the synchro tractors was the clutch, and the PTO clutch coaxial installation in the flywheel, was a poorly planned idea. Many other manufacturers ran a live shaft from the engine to run all the hydraulic pumps, as well as powering the PTO clutch. Another difference is 4010 has pull out fuel shut down, whereas 4020 was either throttle stop override or key switch (electric). New style 4020 all had pencil style injectors, an Bocsh rectangular glass fuel filter. Bottom line, early 4020 had more in common with its older brother than the younger. Fun fact, upright air intake and precleaner was optional on 4010, standard on 4020.

We have a 4010 and 3 early 4020 standard tractors that Americans call wheatlands, they all have clamshell fenders and no pedal cowlings. We have a pair of 67 4020 standards with the big fenders and pedal cowlings. We have one 4020 standard with cab so it has the fenders built in. I think the switch over was 1966 but not sure off the top. We do have a 3010 diesel row crop like an American except when Dad ordered it new, he got the wide adjustable front axle, so it looks more Canadian. ! I love my American style narrow front row crop tractors. Nothing handles better at row ends. Could you guys get diff lock on row crop tractors ?

On the syncro tractors with a loader, if you have a hydraulic valve that stays with the loader it works better. You put a t in the pressure line down by the brake pedals and the the return goes to the hydraulic filter housing. You can buy a filter housing from deere with this return line already plumbed or some guys just braze a fitting to the old filter housing. Doing it this way allows all the returning oil from the loader to go back to the front pump without the oil having to be repumped by the transmission pump.
@Blackearthexcavationandtiling
@Blackearthexcavationandtiling 4 жыл бұрын
Wrong.. return to filter housing is only available on a 3020 powershift .. there is no port for a 3020 synchro- but your right you can weld a bung in the cover... still doesnt help though bc your returning oil to the transmission case . When clutch pedal is pushed the scavenge pumping the rear end stops and it wont feed the front hydraulic pump any longer ....
@TheJohndeere466
@TheJohndeere466 4 жыл бұрын
The filter is after the transmission pump so if you return it to the filter, the transmission pump does not have to pump the oil again.
@Blackearthexcavationandtiling
@Blackearthexcavationandtiling 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheJohndeere466 your not understanding...... The hydraulic pump is in the very front of the tractor .... anything bellbousing, back is the rear end- which is were the oil is housed ... to get oil to the front hydraulic pump there is what's called a scavenge pump in the rear of the tractor.... when you push in the clutch pedal the rear end of the the tractor is dead - 100,% shut off .... so in other words the scavenge pump doesn't feed the front hydraulic pump anymore.... so it doesnt matter where you return the oil - it will not get picked up and delivered back to the front pump until the foot clutch is released ....... we have one tore down in shop right now, if you need to come over, I am happy to show you in person how this works .....
@TheJohndeere466
@TheJohndeere466 4 жыл бұрын
I realize all this but the filter is between the scavenge pump and the front pump so returning the oil to the filter makes the scavenge pump not have to repump the oil.
@Blackearthexcavationandtiling
@Blackearthexcavationandtiling 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheJohndeere466 so.your saying somehow it uses the return pressure to loop it back to the front pump basically ..... which is wrong - it just goes back inside the transmission case and still requires the scavenge pump ... plain and simple - if your scavenge pump does not feed your front pump (which it doesn't when the clutch gets pushed) ..the your front hyd pump starves and the loader or whatever your using the hyds for - will chatter and wont operate correctly....... When our 3020 was syncro range - with a loader we had it plumbed exactly like your talking about .. didnt change it at all ... when we had the rear end apart for repairs - I quickly realized why

I believe that you are wrong about the 3020 engine being a shortened 404, since the four cylinder 3010/3020 had the balancer shaft to lessen the inherent vibration in the 4 cylinder (270 CID) engine. I wonder how many 48/58 148/158 loaders were installed on these tractors WITHOUT having the reinforcing plates that went on the inside of the frame rails? They are shown in the parts manuals for these loaders.

Actually, the biggest difference between any of the “10’s” and “20’s (be it 4020, 3020, etc...) is the redesign of the rear end. My Dad was one of the engineers in Waterloo that was part of the redesign. The 10’s were not holding up in field tests as well so JD “beefed” up the bearings, axels, and gearing in the rear end, transmission, etc. to be stronger....more metal in better places. They are all great tractors, but there is a reason the 10’s were not made long and it was the need for a redesign. Dad was tell you to always go for the “20” series over the “10” series .... but they are all good. The 4020 is still the most popular and revered.....

Hi guys. I think I might have found someone to answer a question. I have a 1966 3020 narrow front with a gas engine and syncro trans. It was priced right and I really like the tractor except the gas motor. I got a wild hair of swapping engines. I can get a 329 out of a 6600 combine. I figure on the 40's frame rails and hood, if the hood isn't too wide. My big concern after a heavy duty clutch will the rearend stand up to the 100 break horse. If anyone has any answers or thoughts I would greatly appreciate it. I know you all love running those old Deeres as much as I do.

dif lock an option on 20 series. All syncros have the third reverse, some you had to cut out the slot in the shift collar. Using third reverse continually can cause a seize in the tranny so JD tried to delete it.
