Digital Multimeter DMM Current Measurements - What NOT to do

A brief tutorial on how to measure current safely using the digital multimeter (DMM) or any type of multimeter. Current measurements are always made through a circuit and never across a circuit. If you make a current measurement across a circuit, you will cause a short circuit and blow the DMM's fuse and/or cause damage to the DMM not to mention cause damage to the circuit you are making the measurement on. Make sure of your current connection before you make any current measurements either with a digital or analog multimeter. In this tutorial I will explain why. This tutorial is well suited for the electronic / electrical technician, technologist, engineer, trades person, or home hobbyist that has no experience with a DMM. Please watch the additional videos using the DMM and other test equipment.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to make video's. I found the breadboard one very helpful, SHOWING diagram and then hooking it up. I use my camera to take picture of big screen so that when I go to hook it up I can refer back. THANK YOU. Also regarding the multimeter video when you brought part up close to the screen I found myself moving closer to see it better (at which time the extra pictures popped up to show more detail - very nice.) First thing I did, when I got my first DMM is, I measured my wall socket's ac voltage, it showed 220v, okay, then I measured the current, by appropriately pulling out red cable and inserting it into amps socket on DMM and when pushing both leads into a wall socket....

WOW..... I'm guessing you made a big spark, a bit of smoke and ruined the meter. I hope you didn't hurt yourself

@@1929fordhotrod Yes, there was a good spark, what surprises me is that meter survived, because both lead tips melted a bit, literally melted and house main fuse instantly blew up with that spark, which most likely what saved the meter. I got away unscratched.

I guess I'm pretty lucky my mistake was made with a relatively small SLA battery

Hi, thanks for a helpful video. I made the mistake of changing the settings on my multimeter while checking a wall outlet. I blew the fuses and when I changed them the display still does nothing. Could this have burned up the mutimeter or am I missing something? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Did you use the multimeter set to measure current. If you did, this is why you blew the fuse in the DMM and most likely caused some internal damage to the meter.
