CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Purvis (Ben Johnson) and his men kill Floyd (Steve Kanaly) in a field.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Milius's first directorial effort in its own small way set the stage in the 1970s for a subgenre of action films that depict a nostalgia for historical figures tinged with a hard-edged skepticism. Warren Oates stars as John Dillinger, whose short-lived career as Public Enemy No.1 was, at least according to Milius, promoted by Dillinger with a self-absorbed boosterism, comforting his victims by telling them, "Someday you'll tell your grandchildren about this." The film captures the highlights of Dillinger's criminal career, as seen through the eyes of Melvin Purvis (Ben Johnson), the FBI agent whose obsession with capturing Dillinger led to Dillinger's death in the back alley of Chicago's Biograph Theater.
CREDITS:
TM & © MGM (1973)
Cast: Ben Johnson, Steve Kanaly
Director: John Milius
Producers: Samuel Z. Arkoff, Buzz Feitshans, Lawrence Gordon, Robert Papazian
Screenwriter: John Milius

I live in the rural Midwest. And what has always impressed me about this film is that it actually LOOKS like the rural Midwest. The farms. The small towns. Even the county court houses. I hate it when Hollywood makes a movie about middle America, that looks more like a backlot in California. I think "Dillinger" was filmed on location in Oklahoma.

@@Barchenhund Estern Ohio tends to have more trees, as Pennsylvania does, as they share a border and similar topography. The further from Pennsylvania, ie. Ohio is 240 miles wide, the flatter it becomes with only sparse outcroppings of trees amongst vast "flat as a pancake" farmland.

I'm sorry. You want to play fair with a psychopathic mass killer who wouldn't hesitate to kill you? If I had a howitzer in this situation and I could use it, I would. That's how you fight a war. Reminds me of John Houston's "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" starring Paul Newman. Bad Bob, played by Kenneth Mars "... the Original Bad Bob. You know - the albino. Meaner than a nest of rattlesnakes ..." rides into Langtry to kill Bean. He tosses his horse aside, goes into a garden and pulls an onion out of the ground , then starts to eat it. He then tells the bystanders he's there to kill the Judge in various horrible ways and then abuse his corpse. In the middle of his tirade there's a loud explosion and a fist sized hole appears in the center of his chest, whereupon he falls down very, very dead. Bean appears from far off and walks to the corpse carrying a large caliber, long and heavy buffalo rifle. One of his deputies says "You shot him in the back from ambush!" Bean responds " And it mighty fine shot it was too. Over two hundred yards, nearer to three, from that barn loft behind the hay bales and I hit his spine dead center and blew his heart out! What did you expect? That I'd let him kill me?" I think he then hanged the corpse. Now that, though totally fictional, is the sensible way to deal with somebody like this.

Because, funnily enough, unless you get pegged in the Heart or the Brain, you can get blown all to hell and not die immediately, it does take the body a little while to pump it's blood out through all those holes and there's this stuff called adrenalin that keeps the shock at bay for a short time. Purvis was a midget at 5.5 Ben Johnson is over six feet. But they did shoot him in a open field. I'm from Oklahoma and the Barkers, Floyd and all these gangsters were mean as hell and murderers. But Ma Barker wasn't in on it at all, she couldn't plan breakfast.

As soon as they start shooting, ALL the Thompsons jam up shooting blanks ! You would think they firearms expert on the set would have that figured out, and also show those guys proper stance and firing position when shooting so they look like real agents that know how to shoot ,but hey, I'm probably the 1% that would even notice that !

this movie was probably the best depiction of John Dillinger ever. sad that hollywood couldnt do another like this, the johnny depp version was real fictional and too clean.
