CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dillinger (Warren Oates) and the gang are ambushed when the police receive a tip-off.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Milius's first directorial effort in its own small way set the stage in the 1970s for a subgenre of action films that depict a nostalgia for historical figures tinged with a hard-edged skepticism. Warren Oates stars as John Dillinger, whose short-lived career as Public Enemy No.1 was, at least according to Milius, promoted by Dillinger with a self-absorbed boosterism, comforting his victims by telling them, "Someday you'll tell your grandchildren about this." The film captures the highlights of Dillinger's criminal career, as seen through the eyes of Melvin Purvis (Ben Johnson), the FBI agent whose obsession with capturing Dillinger led to Dillinger's death in the back alley of Chicago's Biograph Theater.

A real life version of this. In the late 1970's I was an archaeology student and one of my professors was the famous (at least for an archaeologist) Jim Sackett who did the groundbreaking excavations at Kaskaskia outside St. Louis and other sites in the area. He gained his fame through National Geographic. One day he was telling us the nitty gritty of running a dig and he mentioned an experience he had in a small rural town he was digging a site near. One morning he'd gone into town to pick up some supplies at the general store. A car with four bad men from St. Louis came into town shortly afterwards. They intended to rob the small bank which handled most of the money for farmers and small businesses in the very rural area. It was payroll and government checks day. Sackett ran his accounts for the dig through them too. Because the bank was so small and local it wasn't under the Federal Reserve so the deposits weren't insured. That meant that if the money was stolen it would be gone for good. The bank and depositors woukd have been ruined along with most of the area. Only local cops would be involved because the FBI and state investigators only worked on federally insured banks. There were probably less than a dozen cops in the whole county, mostly patrol officers. A major disaster. Anyway, some of the locals noticed the strangers going into the bank and others saw the guns and the robbery through the bank windows. Word spread really quickly and to everybody nearby. Guns appeared from everywhere. Those who didn't have them handy were given the stock of the gun display in the store along with ammunition. Being that part of the country almost every male was a military veteran and even young boys knew how to shoot. Within minutes the town was an armed camp with a constant flow of local reinforcements. He was told to either get a gun or take cover. He took cover. He said when the robbers exited the bank carrying large bags, expecting no trouble from a bunch of hicks, they made to their car without noticing what was going on. They started driving down the street. Nobody said anything like "Stop! Thief!" Then the shooting began. Within seconds the car was full of holes and they were all dead. The local police turned up and wrote a report. The money was returned to the bank, the borrowed guns returned to the store, the riddled car hauled off to the county sherrif's office and the dead men to the local funeral parlor. Then by the afternoon everything went back to normal. He said the St. Louis media didn't even pick up that anything had happened in the rural area. It was made clear to him that the locals would appreciate it if he didn't discuss it either. Since he was known in the area and still did work there at the time he told us the story he didn't. He asked us to keep it between ourselves too. That's why, though this happened probably about fifty years ago, I'm not giving the exact location. He made sure that any really hungry archaeology students never stole any chickens in that area for dinner. And that's what can happen to real robbers who pull something like this in the wrong town.

oh, i can totally believe this story. not just because small town residents tend to be more connected to each other than today, but there was plenty of "civil rights" crimes that went on as late as the 1960's that never got reported until recently, as well.

This reads like the demise of the Dalton gang at Coffeeville, Kansas, after they made the same mistake. Incidentally, many years ago I read the book "Arizona's Dark and Bloody Ground'. about the Lincoln County range wars which involved Billy the Kid. One of the lads who rode in those affrays lived to become an deputy sheriff in a similar small town. One day, in around 1932, a couple of punk kids thought the bank would be an easy hit, as there was only one old deputy lawman, and he'd be an easy target. As their getaway car raced down the street, he calmly walked into the centre of the road, faced them, drew his gun, took aim and disillusioned the pair of them. His subsequent comment was that he'd ridden with the likes of Pat Garrett and some of the western greats, so this pair were nothing in comparison..

One thing you have to notice about the late 1920's and early 1930's was a time of big technology changes in terms of firearms. Thompson submachine guns in .45 ACP, BAR's or Browning Automatic Weapons in .30-06 caliber and other automatic weapons were developed in the last years of the First World War during 1917/18. The American BAR was used only in small numbers in the First World War. However, General Pershing did have pump shotguns with brass shotgun shells filled with buckshot for every 12 soldiers in a squad. You will notice lots of pump shotguns used here in the movie. The automatic firearms, especially the submachine guns gave a good account of themselves when the ranges were 50 meters or less. The BAR was a bulky heavy Godawful weapon to carry at over 18 lbs and fully loaded over 20 lbs. But the BAR had a good range with .30-06 out to a 1,000 metersbut effective out to 400meters. Most of the time these BAR's were fired in short bursts after initial contact was made because the barrel heated up so much after continuous firing leading to many issues. So most American soldiers fired their BAR's in short bursts or on semiautomatic when possible. You can see the disadvantages of a bolt action rifle against fully automatic weapons at close range. It is best to have the men armed bolt action rifle in an overwatch position firing aimed shots from behind cover while the submachine guns and shotguns due the close range work. Every US Army squad had two BAR's in them in WW2 with three BAR's per squad whenever circumstances allowed. I am dubious about the value of semiautomatic pistols, except at very close range of about ten meters or five meters or less. You can't hit anything with a semiautomatic pistol during a firefight. The US Army did a study of German medical records during the First World War. It showed almost NO German soldiers were killed in combat from American pistols or revolvers in combat operations. The US Army got smart in developing the M1 Carbine weighing 5.5 lbs in semiautomatic in a .30 caliber pistol round I think was 7.62x33mm in length with a 110 grain bullet. The US Army used six million of these M1 Carbines extensively in WW2 and Korea for rear area service soldiers who had to carry heavy equipment as part of their primary job. But many of these M1 Carbines were used in frontline combat anyway on a large scale basis. The M1 Carbine was a good accurate weapon out to about 125 to 150 meters with 200 meters the utmost practical range but ideally the M1 Carbine excelled at hitting targets at 50 to 100 meters. The four point contact of the 18 inch barrel M1 Carbine made it much more accurate and much easier for conscripts to learn to shoot with minimal training time. Handguns require enormous amounts of time for training if a shooter is going to hit a moving target at 20 meters shooting back at him. The Army just doesn't have time to teach this level of handgun proficiency during wartime mobilization. So the movie I think like most movies sort of gives a false impression of semiautomatic handguns. Again at five meters semiautomatic handguns are good firearms to stop a target but at 15 meters or more it gets nearly impossible to hit anything with them in a firefight. Never bring just a handgun to a long gun fight. The handgun is only a backup to your long gun, period.

Yep, the USArmy found out in the Phillipines that .38 caliber wasn't enough in a semi autoloader. In the FBI museum there's on display attempts to make full auto Colt 1911A1s with Thompson front vertical grips. While the first world war was, arguably, between the Brits and the French (we called it the French and Indian war since it was carried out in Europe and the colonies), the war beginning in 1914 did bring in a lot of tech, like airplanes and tanks. Shotguns were so effective in trenches, Germany tried to get them banned. In Vietnam they got "duckbill" devices to spread out the buckshot pattern. The M1 had a major role in the 1945 war, as the enemy was still using bolt action rifles. Had the MP44 existed in 1939, things would have been different. Arguably, an M1/M2 in early Vietnam could have been more useful to the Marines than the longer M14.

Banks were uninsured at this time. If crooks got away with the contents of a vault, that money wasn't made good to the farmers, merchants, and little old ladies who'd deposited it. One's entire savings/livelihood could be wiped out by such a theft. That, and promised reward money, was the main reason posses formed to pursue bank robbers -- often for days on end -- in the Old West, too.

There was a book written in the 1970's by a getaway driver hired out for various robberies. He claimed that leaving someone armed by the car kept the Boy Scouts from letting the air out as their good deed for the day. but all rued the day Detroit stopped putting running boards on the sides of cars. It was a habit to line the 'boards with hostages to keep the cops from shooting at them as they fled. In rural areas, the police department was small enough that Ma Barker rigged her getaway cars to drop tacks and sharp metal--they blew out tires on one or two cars and they were in the clear. Farmers were losing their livelihoods to the banks during the Great Depression, so they at first gave sanctuary to the robbers. But once they figured out the more pyschotic robbers weren't Robin Hoods, they began changing their opinion--especially if a gang went after a Savings and Loan too small to fall under FDIC insurance coverage.
