Hello Kent! It's me, Christian. We had some wonderful chats a few years ago. I have a gig as a piano teacher now, classical and jazz. Still learning, as we all do. I'm very happy to see that you are fine and still teaching all these killer techniques and concepts. Love the George Shearing (as I call it) voicing technique! My dad explained it to me. It was/is extensively used in four voice writing for the big band (four Bb trumpets, four trombones and five saxes: 2 alto, 2 tenor and one bari). Pure class!

@@KentHewittpiano88 thanks so much for the reply! Unfortunately my late dad didn't play the piano. He was band leader, woodwind player and arranger. I had to figure out most of it myself, which is extremely hard. Jazz schools were all on your side of the Atlantic and ridiculously expensive. Glad I am able to share my humble knowledge with younger folks. Still learning, as we all do. Will catch you later, all the best!!!

Notes to self: Barry Harris ; Mel Buckner - Locked hands - Shearing ;; 20:00 meat of video; Locked hands technique - double the melody in bass ! ; approach each chord with its dom7b9 (diminished). "diminished approach tones" - "It's traditional". Dropped two is a different sound. Kent seems to do the locked hands technique with 3 or 4 notes in closed voicing in right hand.

Hi. Tried to follow along. I’m thinking a bit in terms of not just chords but shapes. For instance, say the melody is the third note of the chord in the right hand. So, G, A, C, E. If you double the melody line in the bass and add a fifth below you get an interesting feel. What that is, F^13. Or, if you double the bass note of the chord in the right hand and add a 5th above that, you’re working off a G13. In any event, something I’m struggling with is building up the simultaneous speed and length of my licks.
