A guy that I used to play with was absolutely obsessed with him. They had very similar finger picking styles. He used to beg us to play this with him. We got to where we actually had a really tight cover of it. We used to play it for sound check. It was good because everyone has distinct parts. He had the solos down. Not me, I'm like "guitar George". I play chords with a pick ..... Boring I know. Usually though for soundcheck you play like 1 minute just to tweek the levels and everything. So we're in this bar one night doing soundcheck, and the soundguy never stopped us. He was amazed that we were a 4 piece and everyone was good enough to actually play that entire song. He was a fan after that.

Summer of '79, a three month hippy honeymoon across Europe. It's around midnight and we're running through the Munich train station trying to catch an overnight to Vienna. The whole album just came out of the blue, landing smack in the middle of dying 70's dinosaurs, snarling insipid talentless punks, and cookie cutter corporate rockers. Dire Straits might as well have come from another stsr system. Their music was so different and yet so timeless and familar. I love the feel of this album. It has a warmth, a whiteness, a kind of authentic purity. The only other record that matches it in terms of this feel is Television's eponymous third album--another classic for anyone who loves great guitar playing.

The first time I heard this song was the summer of 1978. I was in the backseat of my dad's 77 Chevrolet Caprice 4 door, while driving along the shore line of Grand Traverse Bay Michigan. It was late afternoon and we were on vacation going to our hotel on the bay. I told my dad to turn up the volume and he did and me, dad, mom and older sister rocked out to it. Well, at least me and my sister did, but our parent didn't seem to mind the song. To this day when I hear this song, it takes me back to that moment. Good times!

One of the best songs in rock history. Who's playing this in 2021 like me ? Let's enjoy moments of your life with Dire Straits. You get a shiver in the dark It's raining in the park, but meantime South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowin' Dixie double four time You feel alright when you hear that music ring And now you step inside But you don't see too many faces Comin' in out of the rain You hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Oh, but the horns, they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar, George He knows all the chords Mind he's strictly rhythm He doesn't wanna make it cry or sing Yes, and an old guitar Is all he can afford When he gets up under the lights To play his thing And Harry doesn't mind If he doesn't make the scene He's got a daytime job He's doin' alright He can play the Honk Tonk like anything Savin' it up for Friday night With the Sultans With the Sultans of Swing And then the man He steps right up to the microphone And says: At last! Just as the time bell rings Goodnight, now it's time to go home And he makes it fast with one more thing We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing Tu ressens un frissons dans le noir Il pleut sur le parc mais pour l'instant Au sud de la rivière tu t'arrêtes et tu retiens tout Y a un groupe qui joue 'Dixie', au rythme 4-4 Tu te sens comme il faut quand t'entends la musique résonner Eh ben, tu rentres à l'intérieur mais tu ne vois pas trop de visages Rentrant hors de la pluie, ils entendent le jazz qui s'annonce Y a de la compétition dans d'autres salles Ah, mais les cuivres chantent ce son Là-bas dans le sud Là-bas dans le sud London town Tu surveilles Guitar George, il connait tous les accords Attention, c'est juste pour le rythme, il ne veut pas la faire pleurer ni chanter On dit qu'une vieille guitare, c'est tout c'qu'il peut se payer Quand il se met sous les spots afin de jouer son truc Et puis Harry, ça n'le dérange pas si il ne peux pas succéder sur la scène Il a un gagne-pain, il vit pas mal Il peut jouer du honky-tonk comme n'importe quoi d'autre Mais il réserve ça pour les vendredi soir Avec les Sultans On est les Sultans du Swing Et puis une foule de jeunes mecs, ils déconnent dans un coin Bourrés, sapés dans leurs meilleurs pantalons bruns amples, et leurs souliers hauts Ils s'en foutent franchement d'un groupe à trompettes C'est pas ce qu'ils appellent du Rock and Roll Et puis les Sultans Ouais, les Sultans, ils jouent à la Créole Créole Et puis cet homme va tout droit vers le micro Et ils dit, finalement, avec la sonnerie qui annonce la fin "Bonsoir, c'est l'heure de rentrer chez vous" Et puis vite fait il offre un dernier truc "Nous sommes les Sultans" "Nous sommes les Sultans du Swing"

@@zorkan111 you are either a metalhead, or a meathead.. metal guitarists are cool I guess, but mark is playing a real guitar. Not some shred stick with active pickups. This dude is one of the best ever.. he didn’t have KZfaq to teach him

@@williamherd7251 I agree that Knopfler is one of the best, but you don't have to put down other genre of music to prop him up. "Shred sticks" are real guitars too and nothing wrong with active pickups either. BTW Mark Knopfler uses active pickups too, and so does David Gilmour so I guess they're not playing a real guitar. As for speed, I agree with Eqinor that this is not a fast song, even for a non metal song.

I remember listening to the song in 1978 for the first time. Never heard of the band before never heard a prior song from them before it wasn't like some songs where they need to grow on you this was an instant smash!

My dad hated music for the most part. He only likes Dire Straits. Every time we go out on the boat he'd tell me to throw in the cassette tape, and I never realized how that would stick with me. I miss him so much. God bless you, and I'm so glad that you have the music and the memories!
