The walnut blaster works well. One thing though, eventually you will have to replace the media as it will get worn. This is a very good teaching video for people who don't understand about DI's bad side. I know you watch I Do Cars, did you see his tear down of a modern diesel? Some of the intake ports were almost completely blocked. The downside to cleaning them out is the complexity of getting to the ports to clean them. You started your shop with four bare walls and you have invested heavily in equipment upgrades. Bravo! You may find that your shop is not big enough.

Modern engines can be a real PITA to gain access. Like he said, do media blasting if you already have access. Kind of like replacing water pump along with timing belt.
@radusofronici8095
@radusofronici8095 Ай бұрын
In modern engines the PCV is installed in a way that the blow-by gases going through the PCV end up being pumped, or sucked in the intake manifold. Combine those wet (oil mist) gases with the exhaust gases (source of the carbon) from the EGR and you end up with a sticky carbon mess that likes to deposit on anything it touches...i.e. intake ports and valves. Remove one of the two contributors, PCV or EGR, from the system and no more carbon buildup. Since we cannot eliminate the EGR system we can build a better PCV system, i.e. catch cans that filter out the oil mist from the PCV and the carbon in the EGR is no longer sticking to the intake ports or valves. Great video demonstrating the use of the walnut blaster.
@RaveDaver
@RaveDaver Ай бұрын
We (block off if necessary) disable the EGR in the ecu software. Don't know if this can be done with every car brand, we specialise in European/Japanese/Korean brands for the European market. Dealers can offer this option to customers and the company i work for send me across the country 😅 Luckily The Netherlands isn't that big. Factory warranty and emission requirements are kept in place. Dealers also offer chemical intake cleaning as prevention, it's not a solution when the build up is to heavy.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA Ай бұрын
@@RaveDaver Did an EGR bypass, using a small calibrated hole (started out with a 1.5mm drill, and went up in size, till the EGR system was happy) and put a mesh filter on the outside of the hole to keep it clean. No EGR issues, and much less carbon build up.
@oldcynic6964
@oldcynic6964 29 күн бұрын
I wonder how easy or hard it would be for a manufacturer to design an engine where the gas from the EGR gets fed into one cylinder's inlet(s), and the gas from the PCV gets fed into another cylinder's. I suppose it might be easier on a V6 or V8 where the EGR gas could go to one bank of cylinders and the PCV gas could go to the other bank. Might that reduce the "sticky carbon mess" ? However, I suppose there is no obvious profit to be made by the manufacturer from making the engines last longer, so there is no incentive for them to do it.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 29 күн бұрын
@@oldcynic6964 Problem with EGR is it needs to go to all cylinders evenly, as it is reducing amount of oxygen in the cylinder to allow complete combustion at low throttle with less fuel injected, keeping exhaust temperature down. PCV should have as standard a catch can that removes the oil mist, and is big enough to not fill up between services, probably with a valve that allows the catch oil to be returned to the sump when the engine is off. But adds cost to the engine, while having a PCV that needs cleaning is a money spinner.

I agree that when used judiciously and with due care nothing short of a traditional valve job will remove built up carbon from gallies and valves. Also, as an automotive machinist in the distant past, I can attest to how satisfying it is to clean parts with that process (but in my day glass bead was the preferred media and the valves of carbureted engines often had exponentially more buildup). Love your content, keep up the great work!

Removing the buildup from the intake ports of a DI engine is really just the start. To do this RIGHT, you have to modify the PCV so that crankcases gasses pass into an air-oil separator and the oil is caught in a catch can. I've seen this done on Porsche 9A1 engines. This means of course that the catch can has to be emptied from time to time. Porschephiles are likely to do this; The people who drive Camry's and Priuses are not this way....

I worked for VW/Audi for over 30 years and in the 80s the walnut blasting cured a lot of manufacturers woes due to fuel injection system design constraints but with later fuel systems being less affected by carbon deposits due to wider compensating programs the walnuts went away for chemical cleaners and treatments. Especially if the chemicals became a scheduled addition. With direct injection use, carbon seems to be making a comeback due to low tension rings, oil burning, and blowbye! Especially with carbon on intakes, egr, and valves.

Detergents in fuel was the fix for port injection then. I worked @ BMW & Volvo dealer and we saw lots of it, BMW far worse. Walnut blast and Chevron Techron was BMW-s fix. Way too much Olefin content innfuel and no solvent to prevent olefins from drying as a hard residue. Injector tips would be spraying streams instead of fuel fog and valves would get heavy crumbly deposits. When it hit other manufacturers they had lists of fuel companies with adequate detergent and the ones not on list did not want to be left out and then all did it. That took care of it until DI meant no detergents in intake ports.

Two tablespoons of walnut shells in the sparkplug hole + air nozzle. When I was at a Ford dealer in the early 2010s, the Ecoboost 3.5s were only a couple years old and the 1.6 was fairly fresh (I remember when the 1.6 Escape dipstick recall came out, to date me some). We used BG products and some noise came down from the corporate warranty people that they would not be paying dealers for warranty repairs if it was found that an engine was hydrolocked due to intake cleaners. We used the BG two tank VIA system that you pressurized with shop air, the fuel system cleaner would run the engine and you stuck a sprayer into the intake boot. If you ran the induction service at idle, it was very easy for the intake cleaner to collect in the intercooler. When techs were taking the vehicle out for the test drive to blow the smoke out, they would hit boost and shoot the liquid cleaner straight into the cylinders, hydrolocking the motor. It never happened at my shop AFAIK, but it sure put the fear into us!

This was done at our overhaul and rebuild centers or as the guys in the field called it - overlook and replace , O & R . If it could not be fixed at O&R , it was sent back to the manufacture . The difference for us between chemical, or using particulate cleaning was the level of clean we were trying to achieve. We considered particulates to be surface and chemical, to be a more thorough deep cleaning because the fluid can get into places the slolids could not . Stay safe , have fun.

CSW did a similar task on an Audi (IIRC), using a bunch of zip tie straps in the chuck of a drill. It was remarkably effective. Not quite as good a result as this, but very low risk and low mess, as well as low cost. Certainly a method for home gamers to try. These high velocity nut techniques do a good job though (when used correctly!). Nice.

Very nice video. Love the nut blaster! It’s not the DI itself that is the problem. It’s the EGR that goobers up the intakes. Same it diesel engines. However, with most engines now using some level of EGR, you can assume that if you have DI, you will likely have buildup.

I own 3 GDI engines. When other maintenance forces me to be deep into the engine I media blast, but in between I use a chemical treatment to lengthen the interval between media cleanings. It has proven to be an effective strategy. I also use very good oil and shorten the interval between changes to cut down on the PCV coke up on the intake valves. Also as long as you start with a known quantity (ie media blasted clean valves) and run the chemical cleaner through every 2nd or 3rd oil change you will not damage your forced induction unit. (3 Audis, two 2.0 Ts and a 3.0 nothing wrong with any of the blowers at all)

In my youth, cleaning carbon from the intake valves and pistons/cylinders involved getting the engine good and hot ,running it at 3000rpm and squirting water into the intake for a while.

Cool little thingy. Nice! You also need a thin suction adapter for the vacuum. So you can pickup those small pesky walnut from small hole intake.

Just did this a couple months ago when I did injectors and high pressure fuel pump in my sierra. But I used the chemical cleaner and soft bristle brushes on my drill. And I'd like to point out that the intake and combustion cleaners are designed for turbo engines. CRC for example is.

You make a good point about the turbo contraindication. I've been setting up to do this on my Subaru, and the usual DIY approach is to use a $50 harbor freight blasting media source together with a subaru-specific adapter so media doesn't spray all over, a medium sized air compressor, and a shop vac. Conventional sand blasting requires a big, high flow air compressor but it sounds like walnut is light enough that smaller compressors can accomplish the task, albeit with occasional media flow blockage annoyance. Your pro level compressor seemed to work great.

In an import shop I managed, we began to see these issues with mini Coopers (BMW DI engines). BG developed a cleaning kit for those GDI engines. These designs were developed to squeeze more horsepower of smaller engines, but with time, carbon build up became an issue. Toyota later added another injector in the intake runner so now they had a GDI injector and a port injector to eliminate this issue. The industry had to adjust to massive governmental oversight in the area of US EPA CAFE standards and increased emission standards (Obama Administration). This technology works, but it also demands regular maintenance (BG told us 20/30,000 miles. A catch can will reduce the carbon build up on the back side of the intake valves.

CRC is better to a point. Catch Cans are useless in street cars and do not work! Hence, why there is no scientific data, it's all a scam...

As someone who has a GDI engine and has pulled the intake manifold off a few times I can say the cleaning stuff works if you use it frequently. If you wait until the engine is running like shit then you'll need walnuts.

You should try to find one of those narrow vacuum cleaner attachments that are flat and skinny. You can attach it to the vacuum and get it down in the ports to suck the media out

From what I have seen,read on other channels,forums is that even after the cleaning there is no discernible increase or longevity of the engine the best procedure is regular maintenance of the engine ie oil changes with the manufacturers oil rating.

You don't need a whole closet for the compressor. A couple of wing walls at the motor/compressor area will substantially cut the noise. Some foam board, or even old carpet added to the inside, would be additional help.

Blaster is also very good at cleaning EGR tubes, as it simply has to have the suction attached at one end, probably using some duct tape, and then blast from the other side, so you do not waste the media, and get it Noisse and Shiny as Ray wants. To blank off parts that do not need it best to use duck tape, and it will hold up well to the media, unlike painters tape. For the media valve simply get a large diameter water valve, exactly like the air line one, and put it a little further down, and use it to turn off the walnut flow. Large diameter valve, also called full bore, so that it does not clog, and probably best to use a ball type over any other as those at least do not clog up easily, while others like butterfly will, and the only one that will work with mud and muck is a pinch type, which closes off the hose by compressing it.

If anyone else was curious I looked up the air requirement, 300 L/min or about 10 cfm. Literature says any walnut inadvertently entering combustion chamber would be turned to harmless ash. Thanks for the video.

Fantastic results! The second best use of nuts (right after feeding the squirrels). But seriously, with all the violent swirling in those valve chambers, did the 'backside' of the valve stems and other areas the wand did not directly hit get cleaned? Maybe another design improvement on the R2 is to add the endoscope to the wand.
