Julian Schnabel is an artist and filmmaker. His paintings, sculptures, and works on paper have been exhibited all over the world. He has written and directed the feature films Basquiat (96), Before Night Falls (00), Berlin (07), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (07) - for which Schabel won Best Director at both Cannes and the Golden Globes - and Miral (10). At Eternity's Gate (18) is his most recent feature.
Willem Dafoe teams with painter and director Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) for this unorthodox but reverent account of Vincent van Gogh’s troubled last days. Schnabel devotes much of At Eternity’s Gate to the act of creation itself, presenting the Post-Impressionist master’s artistic process as a visceral and internal experience while Dafoe, as Van Gogh, conveys the strenuous physicality of painting. The result is a kaleidoscopic and immersive film about being alive and reaching, through art, for the eternal - and about the beauty and wonder Van Gogh left behind, unaware of the profound impact it would have.

As an artist myself, I can say with utmost certainty, an artist must do what their heart bids them to create, whether it is appreciated now or not. And yes, as stated here, your audience will arrive. If you are a struggling artist, if you are just beginning and if you are questioning yourself, hang in there. This is part of our path and a part of what it sometimes means to be creators. We don’t get to boast of our dedication to our dreams if things are always easy. Dedication isn’t even required if things are always easy. Your journey is shaping and refining you and your art. What ever you are going through, don’t waste that, turn it into fuel to create more, otherwise your struggles were wasted, meaningless, and that’s the greatest tragedy. Not that people don’t appreciate your art right now. And for all non artists who romanticize Van Gogh’s life and struggles, celebrate his art and lament he wasn’t famous before he died... there are great artists right now who could well live and die unknown. Support your local artists, your friends and your family who create! SHARE their Facebook pages and posts, like their videos, subscribe, go to their events, text them a message about their latest work. It’s ABSOLUTELY free and takes minutes. And if you can, buy their work! When you buy from an artist, you allow them to purchase supplies to continue to create! If Van Gogh could give us a message right now, it might well be to support living artists! Especially if you truly appreciate art and the beauty artists bring to the world.

Great film. Most Van Gogh takes are about this "tragic" and "tortured" artist but this movie is quite uplifting and optimistic. I love the focus being about the creative journey. Very beautiful film!

As a young apprentice I once took lsd---at work. And I will never forget how the blue sky looked. It was electric blue. As I imagine in the state he had created Vincent also saw such a thing. Unique moments are often lost. As you get older everything is designed in order that you only conform and no longer seek anything except normality.

It is sort of frustrating to lose your creativity as an adult. My daughter who’s older now, stumbled across some of my older paintings and drawings and asked why I stopped. I told her mostly because responsibilities consume your days. But looking back as a child you would draw purple trees and nobody cared because there were no rules in art. People are overly critical now, especially of modern art. Look at the mixed reviews on Basquiat....I love his work and think I could never get to that level, yet it makes me wonder where and when I lost that type of vision.

Amazing ! Usually when actors play a character that you always identify them by, it's difficult to see them as playing anyone else. However, I have to congratulate everyone involved in the making of this for really making Vincent convincing. Vincent's work is a favorite artist of mine, and I've really studied his facial features. They absolutely nailed the look. So much of a likeness in in little details like the cut of the beard. Just a fraction of an inch out of shape, and it starts to look like someone else. The hair stylist did a great job. I can really tell it was a team effort, and they really pulled it off .

The colors and distorted vision might have been true for Vincent as seen in his paintings. Director and cast captured glimpses of this! About time!
@sandrajohnson2489
@sandrajohnson2489 5 жыл бұрын
He painted this way because he was an impressionist painter. He was inspired by other painters of his time plus he painted how he saw things but took liberties with it. His own portraits are a good example. Vincent didn't paint himself as he actually looked. He liked to embellish the portraits. If you look at all of Vincent's self portraits side by side you will of course know that it's him but every single portrait looks like a different person. Yes they all resemble each other. Look at Rembrandt's self portraits. Of course he was a different type of painter but in all of his self portraits he looks the same. Even when you look at his younger self you know that it's Rembrandt.

Perry Robles Gogh carried sadness. One of those few people who really got a glimpse of what the world truly is. His paintings though made me feel an odd kind of happiness I could never explain. @sandrajohnson2489
@sandrajohnson2489 5 жыл бұрын
Vincent might have been accepted by the public had he been more of a private person. He liked to hang out in the bars and brothels drinking and carrying on. He was very opinionated and talked a lot and got into heated debates. His behavior could sometimes be explosive which gave others the impression that he was a 'madman'. Not only did Vincent drink (absinthe was his favorite), Vincent sometimes drank the turpentine he used while painting AND, it was known that he licked his brushes. What do you think this did to his nervous system and his brain? Had Vincent lived in modern times he would have been treated with medications that would have helped him immensely plus, his work would have been desired by many. He would have had the means to support himself. Maybe modern day medications and therapy would have made Vincent a different person and would that have changed the way he painted? Maybe. On the flip side, if Vincent lived among us now he might be seen as just another painter. If he continued his erratic behaviors he would surely end up in jail. These days the world is saturated with art of all types. Vincent's work would be lost in the shuffle. Let's not forget one important thing about his work. Had it not been for Johanna Van Gogh, Vincent's work would have been lost forever. We owe so much to her and Vincent's nephew for giving the world the joy of Vincent's hard work.

feel the degree of insolence in this, a man ask the master Van Gogh,' why you peint ?' people who are extremely igniorant and who can't see or sence the Beauty, are extremely dangerous, they refrein the progression of our Era in many ways
